It's to remind people the app is there and try to get them to use it.
It 1. says: Hey! Look at me! Don't forget about me! and 2. Often adds a notification badge on the app which can: A. Annoy some people, causing them to open it and B. May make people think "Oh wait I got a notification, maybe it's important!"
It is an annoying feature that many people dislike but it is quite effective at keeping active users. Facebook uses this pretty intently. -
@qwerty77asdf Yeah, I kind of know why they do it, but what annoys me is that it's noise drowning out the signal. My response is I disable badges for apps that do it, because I'd rather miss the odd genuine notification than be tricked into opening the app to see nothing. I wish companies would apply a bit more etiquette to their apps.

And also many apps just keep generating new notifications all the time and wait to display them all at once when they get an online connection. I have a tablet for mostly offline use, and whenever I turn on wifi I get an avalanche of countless notifications which takes 10 seconds until all of them are even displayed.
No, YouTube, I don't give a shit about the last 50 videos that were uploaded since the last time I opened the app, and with all your data mining it's embarrassing that you still show popups for videos I've already watched on the same fucking account. -

Why have the majority of social networks decided that people using their service in the most basic way deserves a notification?
"Ooh, I have 3 notifications according to the app icon, they must be things that need my attention."

Why does that need a notification? That's just users using your app. That's what I expect when I open the app. I expect to see people posting things. This is going to make me start ignoring notifications in the same way I ignore emails marked as urgent.
