Fuck my fucking life. Laptop of about 6 years is finally giving up on life and I don't have a big budget right now..

Anyone advice on a new pc? I want a desktop one this time. 16gb ram minimal.

    Build one?

@ScribeOfGoD With a 500- euro budget? If that's possible, please educate me 😫
  • 3
@bigus-dickus Yes, about 50 times over the past few weeks.

As I mentioned in the rant, I really want a desktop this time.
  • 3
@bigus-dickus Sorry for being so rude 😥 this isn't happening at the best time ever :(
  • 4
Wait didn't you buy servers and stuff a while ago? Laptops cost a lot less?
  • 3
@billgates Yeah they were about 100 euro.
  • 2
@billgates and desktop* i already have a laptop.
  • 4
@irene Nah, ddr3 is fine with me!
  • 2
My desktop with 8gb ram, and fx6300 and 2gb graphics cost about 600 around the time of release and it was prebuilt, so either a laptop or possibly buying the parts and building will be your best choice imo

    @linuxxx ummm thinkpad?
  • 1
@linuxxx desktops are even cheaper as long as you don't need a GTX 1080....

I want a new desktop too but my laptop hasn't crapped out yet... except for the battery

@wowotek Are there desktop thinkpads as well?
  • 1
@billgates That sounds like an nvidia gpu, amd has native Linux drivers ;)
  • 0
@linuxxx oopss don't see that one. for 500 euros i can't think any good component combination. What is your workload?
  • 5
@linuxxx all laptops are desktops but desktops can't be laptops.
  • 1
@irene not sure what you mean. It's true, just need to connect a monitor, mouse and keyboard to it. But you can't use a desktop on ur lap... unless you have a very big battery pack and lap
  • 1
@linuxxx maybe you can get a used server for that price
  • 1
@wowotek I'm currently at 8gb ram and its not even close to enough 😬

I need to connect at least 4 screens...

    Surface Go
    128GB SSD
    Intel 4415Y
    8GB RAM
    $549.00

    sorry.... lol
  • 2
@CozyPlanes That's fine haha! i need at least double the ram and that one is already too expensive :/

I got myself a passable gaming rig by buying a used OEM(i5-2500 and slapping in a used 750Ti) for ~200€.
I guess you could try to find at least a 4790 in an OEM and add upgrade from there.
Or if you want new get youself a Ryzen(2700 or 2600) and like a RX550. It will compile anything quickly and run basic games.
I can come up with an exact part list if you give me the usecases and a budget.
  • 1
@linuxxx what i mean by workload is what you gonna do with the pc. gaming or running 10 android studio simultaneously?
  • 0
@wowotek Sometimes gaming (steam/proton) but mostly development (netbeans), Firefox and a few vm's (6gb of ram for the vm's I'd say).

Except for that, I manage about 30 servers so quite some terminals.

    Minimal of 4 screens :)

@StefanGliga damn your and @wowotek's avatars are alike, I thought you were the same person 😅
  • 0
@linuxxx that VM need a lot of Physical Cores and RAM, and yet you game on it too. maybe considering to split the workload? that VM and Gaming is against each other.
  • 0
@wowotek I hardly game, I've got a separate 'gaming' laptop so I could also just use the new one for fev/server/security related stuff.

@linuxxx netbeans? I thought u were like pure Linux.... vim for all?
  • 0
@linuxxx Now that you mention it... yea.
Btw, what kind of games do you play. A rig built for RoTR and for Life is Strange are nothing alike.
  • 0
@StefanGliga Spec ops: the line and Need to Know mostly :)
  • 1
@linuxxx can you give us your current rig ?
  • 1
Threadripper would suit you perfectly for all those VMs, too bad they start north of 500$
  • 1
    @wowotek 8gb ram/quad core/500gb laptop!
  • 1
you got no upgrade path there. for 500 eur try to find second hand component, but i suggest you to spend more in the Processor, for VM i would go with intel consumer line or go with Threadripper.

the last few computers I've build were based on a list of an German forum. maybe it helps:

all the parts are perfectly matched and the best bang for the buck

Well, why don't you use one of your servers as a workstation?

    Intel C602 / x79 is a good platform.

Could chime in with a Lenovo/ ibm x3650 m4 board if I'm not wrong.

Though, narrow ilm is kind of a problemm
  • 0
    @vlatkozelka most likely not.
  • 1
500 should be enough, go and build it by yourself and forget to check for used tech too
  • 0
@vlatkozelka no, i mean choose between standard intel line, which he can afford. or if you have high budget high core count of thread ripper would be good
  • 0
@wowotek yes, threadripper would be good.

Though, I haven't seen any TR drop below 300€ used.
So you can clearly see that even though that be Great, TR is not in the 500 something budget range.
    Not even close.

A ryzen 5 1600 would be doable though, I think.
I'm certain that a E5 1600 is doable if you buy used.
  • 0
    @linuxx I can offer you a Supermicro X9DRI-F and a 2620 v1,
Though it's narrow ilm, only few coolers fit that. The good NOCTUAs are, well, quality priced.

Though I could put one in to the box.
Platform is C602, takes regular ddr3 as well as ECC and Reg ECC.

Not sure if anyone has already suggested. Lots of comments, can't read all.

You can definitely have a decent desktop with $500. Dell Inspiron are not bad. I bought two in last few months for my work. So far no issue yet. They are used by designers so I would say the usage is a bit heavy.
