YourMom4572dBut not very many people interact with Linux independent of a desktop setting. Obviously a dev/devops is going to deal with servers and not really have that many issues with that.
For everyone else the interaction is going to be a desktop distro of some sort. I work with Linux servers daily, but they act like utilities. Once setup they just work. Any negative interactions I have with Linux is always a desktop setting.
My one complaint about servers is the move by certain distros to use file formats that don't include configuration information in them. A lot of the config files used to have info on how to configure network settings in the config file itself. However, I think the reason for that is to support tools that manage hundreds of servers. So I kind of get that part. -
@YourMom doesn’t change the fact that when people complain about "Linux", it’s 99% the fault of the distro, not Linux.
It‘s like when people complain about the iPhone when some crappy game crashes. -
YourMom4572d@Lensflare I don't think regular people will ever separate the kernel from the distro. That is a technical detail they wouldn't recognize even if explained to them.

YourMom4571d@Lensflare this reminds me of the GNU Linux shit. Nobody really cares. People who know care, but people who don't know are never going to care.

Can we stop conflating Desktop Linux and Linux (as in the kernel, servers, the project itself, etc)?
Desktop Linux is a pretty tiny niche in Linux, while Linux itself is pretty huge part of pretty much anything related to computers and on top of which a LOT of things are reliant on.
And yet so many times when I see or hear a complaint about Linux or some Linux distro, I look inside and it's specifically a Desktop Linux issue that has nothing to do with Linux itself.
