Is there an open source Slack-like client/server? I want to have a small server just for our global team maybe 20 ppl to be able to have long living conversations in threads.

    Matrix works pretty well for that. You can host your own matrix instance if you want. Riot is a decent client though the interface is rather ugly

    @billgates @halliFacks is right, Mattermost is for example included in Gitlab!

    Not what you are after I know, but flock is a good alternative to slack.

    @halliFacks hm needs mySQL and is a trial? So guess can't get it into my company.

    @billgates See at mattermost.org for the open source variant (either MySQL or Postgres as db backend).

    @halliFacks has to be hosted internally but seems RocketChat may also work though I forgot to check their DB...

    @codenameszjames hmm... Sounds like a fun tech project for this weekend but probably not for work. Wonder if we can even get a Ubuntu VM... We only have RH and Windows normally... and don't have access to public yum/apt repos...

    But yes home is fine...

    @billgates place a raspberry pi in the server or switch room. And run this rocket chat container on it.
