Vampire devs?

In my office, we have a big glass wall (a window wall, however you wanna call it), so we don’t need to turn on the lights until 5 o’clock.

Well, even though I’m goth, I hate to work on a dark office, but two of the other programmers don’t. Actually our boss adviced us to turn on the light to prevent vision problems. Fortunately, a partner of mine always turns on the light at 5 o’clock. They complain, so he tells them “oh, you vampires!!!” And they say “Elizadeath is the vampire here!”

What do you think is better? What works for you?

I stopped doing dark rooms with monitors after getting dry eyes and it hurting to look at literally anything.

@Stuxnet yeah, actually that’s the reason I preffer a well illuminated room

Dark rooms for me just don't do it

@irene not exactly. I’m goth, but in my city it’s very uncommon

@irene yeah, I dress Corporative Goth 🖤(black pants, platform boots, bat jeweldry and office suits at the same time). And the pale skin, well, that’s because I don’t get tan 😂

I recall reading that low light is bad for your eyes. That said, I prefer some low bias lighting behind my monitor and dark theme everything

Dark room with very big display (like cinema) = good for eyes
Dark room with small display = goodluck to your eyes mate

It is like using your phone in a dark room. My little brother played a lot in his laptop (Dota) every night in dark room, now he uses glasses.

Dark rooms improves focus and reduces unnecessary distractions, the lamp above our head is not a natural light source! Especially those that are used in large buildings.

Due to that, you get more tired than if it was dark.

Don't trust me, look up the facts.

The other option is to have a soft spotlight, ambient light etc. Not fucking FBI investigation light.

@irene +1, me too - because it does sound attractive. 😊

And back to topic: For me what works best has changed quite a bit over the years. One of my clients is a big international company - I normally stay there until the evening and they have big indirect lights which are complimented by small indirect lights at the desk. It's not super bright but also nice enough so I can easily work slightly into the night.

It changes dramatically when I get home - as I also work some additional hours from there for my other clients. There I have a lot of slightly bright and warm led lights which get complimented by a huge daylight lamp (highly recommend those!) and a couple of energy drinks. This is nice to work into the early morning.

So. There you have it - my totally not longterm recommendation. 😃

Another one here who has grown to prefer brighter rooms as he’s gotten older.

That said, my sleep schedule is...unpredictable, at the best of times. When Ikve got a solution in mind and know how to execute it, sleep and just about all else can wait until I’m done. And being self-employed, I’ll admit to having little to constrain that self-indulgent tendency.

Case in point, it’s quarter of 5am and I’m just getting home.

    ++ for goth

The thing with well illuminated and eyes is that what matters is contrast. If your eyes have very contrasting things in front they get tired because they cannot adjust properly to one 'setting'.

    Friend told me that
