leave the screen open -- might lower temo by a few ºC. Now you end up creating a hot air pocket between your keyboard and the screen, leaving cooling only to the fans.

Depending how old the laptop is the thermal paste may have dried out switch would cause it to run hot. Also a good clean out of dust in the laptop is always a good thing.
Some laptops have vents on the bottom so elevating the laptop with pencils or something may make a difference...
I plan to get the LG multi monitor, I'll post my new setup once I do, until then I have this:

My work laptop fan goes crazy when I ssh into an EC2 instance and it has to work had. I think it feels empathy for it.
