An intern I was supposed to lead (as an intern) and work with. Which sounded kinda crazy to me, but also fun so I rolled with it. But when I met her I quickly found out she didn't even have a coding editor installed and when I advised one she was "scared of virusses". She had Microsoft Edge in her toolbar, and some picture of a cat as a background. We were given some project by our boss, and a freelance programmer helped us set it up on Trello. Great, lets start! Oke maybe first some R&D, she had to reaeach how to use the Twilio API. After catching her on WhatsApp a few times I realised this wasnt gonna go anywere. After a few weeks of coding and posting a initial project to git I asked her if she could show me the code of the API she made so far..
She told me she was using the quickstart guide (the last 3 FUCKING weeks) which contained some test project with specific use cases.
The one that I did 3 weeks ago that same fucking morning.
AND SHE WAS STILL NOT DONE...
A few days later I asked her about the progress (strangly, I wasn't allowed ti give her another task bcs the freelanc already did) and guess what... She got fking pissed at me
Her: "I will come to you when im done, ok?"
Me: "I just want to see how it is going so far and if you are running into any problems!"
Her: "I dont want to show you right now"
She then goes to my fucking boss to tell him I am bothering her.
And omg... Please dear god please kill me now...
Instead of him saying the she probably didn't do shit. He says to me that the girl thinks im looking down on her and she needs a stress free environment to work in. She will show me when its done. ITS A FUCKING QUICKSTART GUIDE YOU DUMB BITCH.
He then procceeded to whine to me about the email template (another project I do at the same time) which didn't look perfect in all of his clients.
Dont they understand that I am not a frontend developer? Can you stop please? I know nothing about email templates, I told you this!!!
Really... the whole fucking internship the only thing the girl did was ask people if they want more tea. Then she starts cleaning the windows, talk to people for an hour, or clean everyone's dask.
all this while I already made 50% of the fucking product and she just finished the quickstart tutorial 😭. Truly 2 months wasted, and the worse thing is I didn't get any apprication. They constantly blamed me and whined at me. Sometimes for being 3 minutes late, the other for smoking too much, or because I drink to much coffee, or that I dont eat healthy. They even forced me to play Ping Pong. While im just trying to do my job. One of the worst things they got mad at me for if when my laptop got hacked bcs it was infected with some virus. He had remote access and bought 5 iPhones 6's with my paypal while I was on break. I had to go home and quickly reset all my passwords and make sure the iPhones wouldnt get delivered. strange this was, this laptop I only used at the company. So it must have been software I had to download there. Probably phpstorm (torrent). Bcs nobody would give me a license. And the freelancer said I * have to *.
the monday after I still had to reinstall windows so I called them and said I would be late. when I came they were so disrepectfull and didn't understand anything. It went a little like this:
Boss: why u late?
Me: had to reinstall my laptop, sorry.
Boss: why didnt you do this in your own time?
Me: well, I didn't have any time.
Boss: cant you do this in the weekend or something? Because now we have to pay you several hours bcs you downloaded something at home.
Me: I am only using this laptop for work so thats not possible.
Boss: how can that even be possible? You are not doing anything at home with your laptop? Is that why you never do anything at home?
Me: uhm, I have desktop computer you know. Its much faster. And I also need to rest sometimes. Areeb (freelancer) told me to torrent the software. He gave me the link. 2 days later this happends
Boss: Ahh okeee I see.. Well dont let it happen again.
After that nobody at the compamy trusted me with anything computer related. Yes it was my own fault I downloaded a virus but it can happen to anyone. After that I never used Windows again btw, also no more auto login apps.8 -
VP: We're going to have HR join the call.
Me: Okay. *Shrug*
(HR Joins)
VP: I'm afraid we're going to have to let you go. I'll need you to return your laptop.
Me: Okay. *Shrug*
VP: ...
HR: ...
HR: Do you want to know why we're letting you go?
Me: Nah. Bye.
After five years of working in terrible conditions for terrible to mediocre people, I accepted losing my job without worry. In a way, I was thankful.
I wanted to quit so many times.
I'm much happier these days.6 -

Best co-worker quitting story?
"T" I've refereed to in previous rants knew he was close to being fired, so he jumped ship. 'T' sent the usual "I'll miss you guys" email to the department, except me (and a few others that didn't fall for his BS and not scared of him). His mistake was he sent the email out a day early (buddy forwarded me the email) and left the stuff (box of pics, books, etc) he planned on taking with him. One item in particular was a new company provided laptop bag, which technically wasn't his to keep (supposed to leave/turn-in any company provided equipment), so I grabbed the bag and hid it.
The next day I heard him slamming drawers (looking for the bag) and a loud cursing. Other devs peeking over the walls asking what's wrong.
Dev1: "Dude, what's up? Whatcha' looking for?"
T: "Nothing...fuck!...damn it...nothing...assholes...fucking assholes!"
Dev2: "Who's the ass? What's wrong?"
Dev3: "Need help looking for something?"
T: "No..no...nothing...I'm fine...making sure I don't forget anything."
'T' never found out who took the bag and I've had that laptop bag underneath my desk ever since.5 -
I worked someplace once that fired a person for lack of quality output. Before that he sued the company over a labor dispute. After they fired him he went and founded his own business. A year later the company decided to recycle his old laptop to another developer and discovered the source code and business prospectus on it. The company took it to court and said it was actually their business because it was created on its own equipment and the time stamps confirm during business hours also. Courts agreed and they got possession of his business and then fired him again.6

Friend : I will do this when I get back from work.
Me : But you are working from home, aren't you?
Friend : Yes, but I am at work, right now.
Me: And how does your route back home look like?
Friend : I switch input source from my work's laptop to gaming rig.5 -
My GF said today that she had a dream where someone took her laptop, deleted elementaryos and installed windows. She was so infuriated and enraged that she woke up, and it took her like five solid minutes to realize that it was just a bad dream, and her Linux is safe.

I am mentally burned out from web development.
Physically I'm fine, but it's getting more difficult each day to open my laptop and write code, documentation or do code reviews.
Web development just seems so meaningless, where my day to day job has me trudging through one web form after another. I'm sick of implementing business logic on the backend and tired of listening to the product owner bitch about users who are demanding.
My productivity has fallen to the level where I'm feeling guilty for spending my time on nothing!
Don't give me advice, I know I need a change of scenery.
I just need to find the motivation to work on another hiring test which has nothing to do with the actual job.8 -
Yours truly might make the money by new year to buy themself a new laptop.
And only then the projects that were left to die, will finally see the light!
Fingers crossed tho! 🤞9 -
Dev starter pack:
1) A big ass headphone to listen to music
2) A nice mechanical keyboard to write “hello world”
3) Some cool stickers to fill laptop back
4) A box of tissue to wipe of the tears(after seeing your progress)34 -
I HAVE A NEW LAPTOP!
and it now has a functioning linux 😁
I fucked it up once tho. I removed the entire network manager by uninstalling bluez. How the fuck, I don't know.9 -
Had a stupid sales dude. Lost his driver's license due to reckless driving (and this was a few in a row including drunk driving) for 6 months. As it was his job required to drive around he got instantly fired.
So he had to leave laptop, iPad and phone with us (IT). His next stop was finance for the lease car but he was pissed, left the building and drove off.
Apparently rules are super shitty for the theft of a lease by the registered employee. So we could not really mark it as stolen. We alerted the police anyway and he was caught next week for driving without a license. So he went to jail and we got the car back6 -
I am back with some more emotional shit.
So tomorrow is my last working day at my second employer where essentially I'll just walk into the 10 seater serviced office to drop my laptop in a cupboard because no one else is here.
So today, an hour ago, they had a virtual farewell for me and everyone spoke of me highly with specific examples.
Well that's not what this post is about, but the emphasis is that I am still in dual mind of whether I made the right decision to quit my second employer so soon (in just 10 months)?
If I had stayed for two months more:
1. I'd gotten a hike this week
2. More RSUs in that hike along with cash
3. Joining RSUs would have vested for the cliff period of 1 year
4. Tenure would be at least a year
5. Would have found a better job with higher pay (on the new hiked salary).
I surprisingly got the grip of the product and that's when I decided to quit.
The reason I quit is I wanted to optimise for WLB and timezone with better team culture.
While the next job is surely a company I wanted for a long time and that too in B2C space, I really lost my affection for that role and that's where it came to me upfront and I rejected them initially before picking up the offer again.
My second employer is a very global and one of the largest brands. Really wanted to stick around and never got to enjoy the benefits which others did.
Only time can tell, because when I chased something I never got it, when I stopped, it came to me.
And what I am chasing now is something I am unable to achieve.
Why is life so fucked. Seems like I am about to lose one of my biggest and only life and career dream.
Maybe I fucked up this decision. Maybe not. Only time can tell.12 -
Hired a new BI developer. She tested reasonably ok in SQL, and certainly showed good strengths in visualising data, plus had a good attitude in the interview. We hired her. She broke her laptop the first day. We got her another then she complained the camera didn't work but didn't realise the lever in front of the camera was to move the privacy shutter off and on.
Assigned her some work of taking queries that are used in a BI tool that targets the transactional database directly, and re-jigging them for Snowflake which we're using as a data warehouse now, aggregating all our data into one place. Yet, she's struggling to understand why the SQL query she's pasted in doesn't work as-is.
I go over it again; the source schemas and tables are this, but in Snowflake we've named them this. She then bemoans how much work that is to change them all - I say use find and replace. She then struggles with Snowflake syntax errors and asks for a guide on T-SQL to Snowflake. I show her Google and say "this is what I did when I hit these problems - search for 'Snowflake equivalent to T-SQL getdate()' or 'how to get current date in Snowflake' but she still doesn't understand. I ask if she's every had to work between T-SQL and MySQL or MySQL and PostgreSQL or Oracle and so on and she says yes. I say the syntax isn't the same, is it? And she goes oh, now I understand.
She scored reasonably in her SQL test but I'm now concerned there's something fundamental missing in her grasp of SQL. I gave her a detailed demo of the tools, I explained in the interview and on her start about our move to a data warehouse for all our apps, and put her through some training plus gave her time to work through our Confluence pages - not expecting she'll remember everything, but more to ensure she recalls they exist and what the general contents are.
Anyhow, that's my rant.7 -
My daughter showed me a "computer" she made in Minecraft using 2 trapdoors. One for keyboard and one for screen. She folded the screen one upward to show its like a laptop. It was the oak trapdoor that has the four square holes:

Me: So your computer runs Windows?
She: No!8 -
Super trivial but who ships a laptop to a new employee with random software on that is clearly for their own preferences? I don't use classic shell, I don't like classic shell, and it hugely fucked with both my opinion of the new place (an IT company, ffs) and my estimation of the person who configured it. Do whatever shit you must on your own machine but get out of my way and let me use the fucking os without more pointless shit! I wouldn't do this to you, no matter how much I might love some obscure additional layer for primarily nostalgic reasons. Raging!7

ha...
that I did NOT expect.
Opening a website in chrome. Laptop's transforms into a drone and tries to lift off my desk and fly away with its fans. I see warning popups telling me that CPU Tº is 100ºC.
Opening website in FF. Laptop calmly opens it up and raises Tº from 50ºC to only 75ºC.
And here I thought that Chrome is fine-tuned for anything you can throw at it.
And the website really has nothing fancy in it... Just some text to read, images to see in the background and some buttons to click on.
https://ignitis.lt/lt/...
its EN version, however, does not have the laptop-heater feature installed.
WTF11 -
Worst and only experience is the reason I moved away from programming...
25 years ago I was hired to copy a phone book list to a access database.
Access back then would create lots of garbage, so I would add 3 to 5 entries before access crashed (shitty p133 laptop with 32mb ram running windows 98.
So I made a visual basic program to add data and work around the problem.
I offered said program to the guy really cheap and would still make it better.
Did also a admin module since he had hired dozens of people and I knew he would have problems peasing the databases together.
And... Dude cancels the deal.
I get a job, 2 weeks later he calls me... Ohhh I don't know how to get all the databases together...
Me: I'm working now, the program I did solved said problem. I trew the code away. Deal with it. -
What is it with devs (not all, by any means!) who don't understand networks or basic computer operation? I'm not talking about anything complex, but things like the dev who asked if his IP address could be whitelisted so he could remote in from home. We asked what his public IP address is and he said 10.0.0.27.
Or the new dev who started and said her laptop camera didn't work and logged a ticket, only to be asked if she had the camera cover open or closed and said, "oh, that's what that lever is for."
Don't get me wrong - many devs and sysadmins and IT people of all fields are excellent. And there are some who are crap in every field. This is no rant about devs in general, just *these* crap devs that I can only throw my hands in the air and think, well, they scored ok in the SQL test.4 -
For the Project Management exam, my university requires us to install a program on our PERSONAL laptops that is meant to take over the control over the entire system during the exam, monitor any “suspicious activities”. The software is closed-source (it’s called Schoolyear Exams), does god-knows-what in the background, takes the control over the entire system and can be summoned through any Chromium web browser.
Don’t get me wrong, I get that you want to make sure nobody is cheating - but at this point, I’d rather write it with pen and paper. Or just provide us with computers for the time of exam.
I decided to whip out my old laptop instead, installed a Windows 10 on a separate SSD, and installed that software on it.
Also it’s very amusing that this software is also mandatory for the Linux exam… But the program can’t run on Linux (it’s Windows and Mac only and doesn’t even support M1 chips).
EDIT: typos12 -
I'm truly surprised how well Linux is coping with my 32GB RAM dev laptop :)
Currently open and actively used:
1. 2x Chrome windows (70-100 tabs total)
2. 5x IntelliJ Idea projects
3. 3x AndroidStudio projects
4. 2x different grade daemons
Still snappy, still quick af!
I wonder how windows would handle that. From my xp 2 IDEs already were a struggle34 -
When you open your laptop and see the mail, just a random day and you think nothing is gonna get better and you see 2 internship offer letter, after making many projects, year of study.
This part of my life
This little part
Is called happiness. -
So, as I'm currently cut off from the world of tech, my anxiety in regards to research has settled and I actually enjoy doing it again on my terms. It just makes me jealous to look at all these people developing cool stuff and wanting to get in on the project and maybe improve a part or two, particularly the robot kind. I want to slap some neural nets on majority of the robotic shit I see, or optimize them, or do something to make them more robust... But I don't have a research position right now where I can spend time and money doing that. So I just sit in front of my laptop and sulk.
... And literally this is why we can't have nice things. Cuz I'm not hired to make nice things. Literally.2 -
Had to change password on computer for administrative reasons (sysadmins and infosec make us change our pass every quarter). Changes didn't sync to everything so now I can't even log into my computer.
Need to go to the office tomorrow so some guy can type in an admin password on my pc and do stuff to it. If that doesn't work I will just be given a new laptop.
Seriously fuck this week6 -
work laptop without admin permissions to install anything, like a text editor, or IDE
why couldn't i have been born to a rich family instead of being a wageslave5 -
I have been keeping this inside for long time and I need to rant it somewhere and hear your opinion.
So I'm working as a Team Lead Developer at a small company remotely based in Netherlands, I've been working there for about 8 years now and I am the only developer left, so the company basically consists of me and the owner of the company which is also the project manager.
As my role title says I am responsible for many things, I maintain multiple environments:
- Maintain Web Version of the App
- Maintain A Cordova app for Android, iOS and Windows
- Working with pure JavaScript (ES5..) and CSS
- Development and maintenance of Cordova Plugins for the project in Java/Swift
- Trying to keep things stable while trying very hard to transit ancient code to new standards
- Testing, Testing, Testing
- Keeping App Stable without a single Testing Unit (sadly yes..)
- Just pure JavaScript no framework apart from JQuery and Bootstrap for which I strongly insist to be removed and its being slowly done.
On the backend side I maintain:
- A Symfony project
- MySQL
- RabbitMQ
- AWS
- FCM
- Stripe/In-App Purchases
- Other things I can't disclose
I can't disclose the nature of the app but the app is quite rich in features and complex its limited to certain regions only but so far we have around 100K monthly users on all platforms, it involves too much work especially because I am the only developer there so when I am implementing some feature on one side I also have to think about the other side so I need to constantly switch between different languages and environments when working, not to mention I have to maintain a very old code and the Project Owner doesn't want to transit to some more modern technologies as that would be expensive.
The last raise I had was 3 years ago, and so far he hasn't invested in anything to improve my development process, as an example we have an iOS version of the app in Cordova which of course involves building , testing, working on both frontend and native side and etc., and I am working in a somewhat slow virtual machine of Monterey with just 16 GB of RAM which consumed days of my free time just to get it working and when I'm running it I need to close other apps, keep in mind I am working there for about 8 years.
The last time I needed to reconfigure my work computer and setup the virtual machine it costed me 4 days of small unpaid holiday I had taken for Christmas, just because he doesn't have the enough money to provide me with a decent MacBook laptop. I do get that its not a large company, but still I am the only developer there its not like he needs to keep paying 10 Developers.
Also:
- I don't get paid vacation
- I don't have paid holiday
- I don't have paid sick days
- My Monthly salary is 2000 euro GROSS (before taxes) which hourly translates to 12 Euro per hour
- I have to pay taxes by myself
- Working remotely has its own expenses: food, heating, electricity, internet and etc.
- There are few other technical stuff I am responsible of which I can't disclose in this post.
I don't know if I'm overacting and asking a lot, but summarizing everything the only expense he has regarding me is the 2000 euro he sends me on which of course he doesn't need to pay taxes as I'm doing that in my country.
Apart from that just in case I spend my free time in keeping myself updated with other tech which I would say I fairly experienced with like: Flutter/Dart, ES6, NodeJS, Express, GraphQL, MongoDB, WebSockets, ReactJS, React Native just to name few, some I know better than the other and still I feel like I don't get what I deserve.
What do you think, do I ask a lot or should I start searching for other job?24 -
Not necessarily a DEV rant, but a rant nonetheless.
This day sucks.
So first, my bus got late 25 minutes, because entire city decided that it will take a car - because it was raining horizontally. At some point I was doing 1 km in 10 minutes. Then my train got delayed by 5 minutes. So l had to do a little bit of cardio and ran to the next bus from station to school.
When I finally made it - surprisingly 5 minutes before the start of the exam, it turned out that I wasn't even on the list of participants. Which was surprising to both me and teachers, because I was clearly registered on the portal. Well, they hand added me in and let me in.
Then I open my laptop, I start it up
I try to start the exam. But it said that I don't even have the examination program - even tho I did install it yesterday.
So I had to quickly download it and reinstall it. Then I could finally write the Project Management exam.
Thankfully the exam went fine, I feel confident about the results, but it’s like everything tried to make sure I am not gonna make it.3 -
I am now so nervous waiting for the first day of my new role. It is projected to start on May 16th. In the meanwhile I’ve finished my Background Check, Tax Documents, and other onboarding information. There’s supposed to be a drug test but I haven’t received info on it yet. I have two weeks where I might receive a few memos and hopefully my company laptop but will be largely just waiting. I’m going to try and focus on learning Puppet while I wait but this is like waiting for Christmas as a kid. Even though it’s a very short amount of time it feels like years.5
-
OK! NOBODY MOVE! 🙅
I finally have a candidate for the laptop I want to buy. 😁
MSI modern 15 A5M
Anybody used it? Anybody got something against it?8 -
I love to develop for the web, i find JavaScript a nice language and I love the unmatched flexibility of the web platform but i hate when I have to work with the unstable or badly documented APIs which seems to be the norm in the enterprise world: wasting hours in forced breaks because suddenly the API returns nothing but 503 or the VPN suddenly dies, wasting lot of time to find the documentation you need in the slow and cumbersome enterprise API manager, making lots of tests with cURL/Paw/Postman/wethever trying to find out why a request which should work just doesn't... in these moments I envy desktop and mobile devs. The worst part of it is which microservices made everything worse since nowadays there are way more "moving parts" which can break making the API you need unavailable and unlike with monoliths often it's hard to just clone a back-end, populate a database and then work fully locals since now everything depends on a lots of things which are hard/almost impossible to replicate on your laptop.1
-
And so.. I have noticed.. every time I ignore Windows updates for a little while.. the laptop just starts shitting. It gets so fucking slow that you can’t even move the cursor properly. So you have to force shut down the laptop and turn it ON.. and Windows starts updating!
Not at all irritating 😊3 -
Video social calls are the absolute worst. I have a shitty Intel 11 series chip in my laptop; which is a waste of sand. My laptop often slows to a crawl on calls, so I can't work on things, and I have to listen to them all prattle on about kids and things I don't care at all about. Sometimes we play games, which is tolerable. My company is international and 100% remote, so this will never end so long as I work for them.2
-
I have been sitting in front of my laptop for 4 hrs without getting up with full concentration and now all I can see is black boxes wherever I look.
-
so... the next step from programmer/developer is always an entrepreneur/business?
i see my daily work : i open my laptop, i see tickets from my company which include bug fixes, new feature development, some discussions , etc. i fix the bugs, make the features, add my points in discussion and the day is done.
from company's point of view, i am an ideal developer. in some years i will become a senior dev, which i guess involves similar stuff but different weightage (or is it different? please comment) . after that, we become tech lead , then engineering lead , then mts1 then mts 2... etc
i am guessing you guys must have similar trajectories in your company. from what i know, some people don't continue this trajectory (from boredom, lust for money , other reasons) and instead go on building a new product / starting a company , going into managerial/ entrepreneurial role.
so this is one kind of goal : "i will learn tech enough to launch my own company and be a ceo of it". i can't relate much to it. why go into tech when you wanna launch a product? why not just go into business schools from the day1 and get business knowledge?
anyways the above are the questions that i don't really want an answer for, those are just my criticisms.
but my main question is : what about those people who DON'T want to go on launching some business?
- do you people exist?
- what's your goal? is it around the lines of "learning all the tech of the world to be the cto or chief engineer of a company"
- how do you plan to achieve it?
honestly i want to be the second kind of person, i.e the one who always codes/ aims to code but can't seem to find a proper path/goal to it. plus the job security that i have seen with businesses/entrepreneurs throughout my life, my introvert mind fails to see "just coding" as a success.
i am 23 , but i fear that when i am 40 and my 5 yo kids comes to home seeing his dad sitting against laptop "just coding" , they will feel more insecure against their friends whose father has some shop or founder of some funded startup
(40 yo dads, share your views on life too , please )7 -
So I'm toying around with an old Pentium M laptop I used to use back in 2013-2015,and it's surprisingly more useable than I thought it would be,but I swear I don't remember the internet relying so heavily on JavaScript.6

Some wordpress plugin can't do a certain job in background, instead I was forced to keep the window open for nearly two hours, until my laptop froze and it had not reach 50% !!
An image says better than thousand words 👇🏻4 -
OMFG, Dell, why can't you be normal and make your batteries die like any other batteries - by simply switching the laptop off immediately when the charger is unplugged???
Guess what it looks like when a JD25G (XPS13 9530) battery is dying (still 88% health)!
Constant screen flickering (yes, even in BIOS). Good thing I'm not an epileptic - my screen is fucking strobing!!!
I know it's a battery, because I had the same issue some years ago when I replaced the died original one with a cheapo made by GreenCell. Boi that was fun - I saw my laptop do miraculous things I never would've thought of! Screen flickering was one of them. As soon as I replaced that turd with an original one all these magic powers went away.15 -
I will keep this short. I fucking hate Windows 11. There is nothing I like about it after over four weeks of having its fuckery drip down everything I do on my laptop like radioactive maple syrup. None of my apps from Windows 10 work. I google troubleshooting and I'm not going to go through 10 hacks to solve a problem created by Microsoft. The screen moves all over the place for no reason. I hate it. Not as much as I hated Mac, but I'm going to revert back to Windows 10 if I can. I don't wish to separate my laptop screen from my laptop keyboard again. The only person I know who can fix it tried to steal a hundred and twenty bucks from me. Thank you for reading this rant I'm living a charmed life otherwise, but snipping tool just fucked up and I'm fucking fed up. Peace out.17

Looks like vector drawing applications stopped at bezier curves and don’t want to progress much.
I made a inkscape vector image and I used svg patterns to draw some background, then inkscape stopped responding when I’m trying to open that file on mac.
I tried bunch of other vector drawing apps hoping that at least one know what svg vector patterns are, looks like vector drawing applications use bitmaps for patterns and own formats instead of following svg specification.
I even wanted to pay for illustrator 30$ per month but it can’t do it. It opened my svg file claiming there’s no background there just empty space.
When I open svg image from browser it renders correctly but editing with gui is impossible cause all of those great softwares like illustrator, vectronator, sketch, affinity designer can’t handle vector patterns.
I ended up installing inkscape on old laptop that’s running ubuntu desktop.
Inkscape can do everything I want but I still need to delete not used pattens by editing xml.
At least it handles svg better than others.
Seriously vector image drawing apps suck.10 -
One of the funniest memories of my teenage years is when I fucked a girl and she was anxious about her parents might hear us, so I pressed play on her laptop and “I can never be your woman” by White Town started playing, and we were too busy to chose another one. Still one of my favorite songs 😂2

ugh apple has so unfair advantage with safari that i feel anger for chrome and google to be stupid enough to let this go and not sue.
run 40 tabs on safari, each with videos running actively in each tab, it won't even flinch.
run 2 tabs on chrome with static content, and its using 17.5 gb of ram and running 432 threads
m1 laptop. and my total ram is fucking 8gb!
and obviously enough, safari has neither any good extensions nor a good ui and nor a fucking android app to sync history.
browser wars are stupid and making me mad every breath. should i choose between being the dunbest fuck nd run everything in a smooth running browser without any features or should i run in a nice dat syncing browser with great community BUT IS KILLING MY RAM ,BATTERY AND MAKING ME REBOOT EVERY 30 MINS!!!16 -
I have stopped Windows updates in my laptop. But no windows has to do some shit in order to maintain its reputation. Every 10 min I get this pop up.9

Does anyone of you own a Microsoft Surface?
What are your thoughts on Surface vs. Mac.
For my next laptop upgrade, I am thinking to invest in a decent one which lasts of half a decade or longer.
Mac is surely out of question.
Have had terrible experience with Lenovo and Sony. Don't quite like HP or others.
Remaining options are Surface or Dell.17 -
I'm thinking of self hosting all my small web projects,
I have this old laptop running ubuntu server heedlessly I used to store and stream pirated movies, after multiple embarrassing moments with free backend/platform as a service options and not finding a cheap VPS, this seems like the way to go. I don't get much traffic on these sites i just want them to be available when i need to present them.
then there's tons of other features that are locked behind a paywall,
I once had to store images in the database because heroku wont accept file uploads and the project hadn't been paid, in short, I was dead broke9 -
Sometimes i think that a lot of devs are on their toes with ears up all the time . and i don't mind, i am even one of them. I mean lockdowns have shown what it is to be in a nice comfy home, working without any eyes on you and still giving a good 100%. .
I remember one of my earliest experiences of work place exploitation as an intern.
- I would get a half baked task with blurry details which would prompt me to goto my TL every 5 minutes. (now the managers are so good that they fill complete details in tickets, down to the fucking colors and figma links to get something done)
- If say , i went to my TL at 4.30pm to ask for a 2 minute issue, he would say he got a meeting and will be back to me in 5 minutes. he will eventually come up at 6.30pm, moments before just when am about to leave.
- during that whole time, i would be wasting my time continuing to refactor whatever i have done. i can't go anywhere since he may call and also what good can i do outside in a no good area full of concrete blocks? at home i open my laptop ,watch movies , play games, and go outside to park or gym whenever my seniors are ghosting me. and i don't even care if they respond back while i am in a game or at gym. they ghosted me first, for 30 minutes , i say fuck them for another 40 minutes while i complete my crunches , and turn off my internet.
- however if i even barely mentioned that i got nothing else to do so please clear me out first, then that asshole's asshole licker colleague would come school me for "improving" my already correct code
all these experiences have made me wonder whether i would ever come to terms with an office based work. it's all of no use , just to travel so many hours to just sit around some comfy chair in an ugly concrete building full of ugly hateful people and participate/become a victim of politics and explotiation -
So i wanna get my hands dirty in tech hardware. i have learned the abc of computers only 7 years ago, and i still consider myself a very noob in computers since my first computer was a laptop and even today ita still the laptop.
i got 0 experience with assembling, 0 experience setting up my network cards, cpu disks , ram in slots and what not.
but this changes in next few weeks. i am fed up with ugly jamf limitations on my office laptop, fed up with the 20-mins-to-run emulators on my personal laptop , and overall fedup with this capitalist mindset that goes into making these "4 years until shit is weak" laptops.
the only exception i find in laptops are the mac laptops which are delightful to be used , especially there hardware. however they too seem to be made with $$$ in mind and i am not going to spend $4k on a piece of beautiful metal which can't run emulators properly.
so my dear seasoned professionals, can you guide me with how to build a PC? the only requirement is smooth experience with android studio emulators and a possibility to upgrade processor, ram , ssd, etc whenever the tech grows (which i guess is a possibility with PCs, right?)7 -
Developer's frustration..
I currently don't have the space (believe it or not) to accommodate two screens onto my desk.
I've been developing on a single 15" laptop for years (since 2010).
I'm getting tired of constantly having to switch between windows. lol.
Mmmmust figure out wayyyy to incorporate new screen into my setupppp. lol14 -
ugh... another shitty day. its been 2 months since i joined this team , and i am counting the days that have not gone being shitty.
i am not doing any shit of a work, yet just sitting in front of company code and slack whole day, trying to figure out what am supposed to do and how.
- my task is currently making release of a unity sdk. i never worked on unity until 2 days ago when i gor this task.
- company laptop has a fuckin jamf with unity 2019 that won't even open properly. i raised a ticket to IT and somehow got it to update and work for my laptop after 2 days.
- now i am able to create a default project and get it to run, but now the company sdk that is supposed to be installed in a project causes the project to not build when i include it.
- other team members are being assholes. i message this guy 4 times in 10 minutes since i have no clue what to do, and this asshole replies after 6 hours, when i am having my lunch. and his reply ? "try to play around this . am working on a p1 bug so can't help now" wtf man give me something, i am stuck
- there are also issues raised on our github's page for sdk. i have no clue how our sdk works internally and yet i am expected to respond to these issues. i asked the same asshole to look onto an issue(whose reporter was nice enough to include a full stack trace and even the exact place which is causing ANR and his reply was "yeah check on this , ask the other(asshole) guy about it, he fixed ANRs before. look into the sdk, we don't need to reply on GitHub issues asap".
- the main problem here is : i have zero clue how to approach this sdk! i have implemented it completely in a sample project but the whole sdk is in java with so so many pointless (from my p.o.v) interfaces and base classes that i can't understand how to get to the bottom of it! and yet am supposed to jump into this stuff.
i hate when code feels like magic and job feels like prison janitor work. i want to get into action : add apis , build stuff , make a change , but somehow i ended up with the most boring and irritating job i could find.
i can't even just stop and work on my personal stuff because they have got jamf on this fucking laptop. us these async expectations are killing me
btw did i mention the tech lead has been having a fantastic time getting married and taking multiple vacations? yeah, that guy just took a call with me for like 3 times in last 50 days. this company is all so charming from outside : weekends off, 1/4 fridays off 3 days a week standup , but so less interactions is clearly making me , a new guy with already a very less interest in java and their various shitty sdks, very uncomfortable.2 -
Is there more useless and stupid feature in a laptop than a touch screen ?
I have one in my work machine and only time I "use" it is when I accidently click some shit while closing the lid.
Pain in the ass.
To think that some people actually are paying extra $ for it.5 -
I am looking at replacing my Dell XPS 15 from 2019, but because I work 100% remote I am considering building a desktop developer rig instead of getting a new laptop. I have only had laptops since early 2000s, but thought it would be fun building something from scratch again. The problem is I have fallen tragically behind on everything hardware, and therefore looking for some pointers.
I don't want an RGB rainbow unit with 6 loud fans requiring a noise cancelling headset to work on. I want a top spec, stealthy thing that has all the goodies but also runs quiet. A decent graphics card that can run the latest games at a decent frame rate, but not the top of the line either.
Any tips on cases, motherboards, RAM, drives, fans and grahpics cards appreciated. The budget is roomy, comparable to a top spec Dell XPS 15 or ThinkPad X1 Extreme.12 -
How to handle a company in which I work as a junior android dev for the past 7 weeks where there is zero mentoring?
I have 2.5 year experience in android dev and then I had a 1.5 year gap. I was looking for a company where I can get back on track, fill my knowledge gaps and get back in shape. So I accepted lower starting salary because of this gap that I had. Me and manager agreed that I will get a 'buddy' assigned and will get some mentoring but nope..
70% of my scrum team with teamlead are overseas in USA and I have just 2 senior colleagues from my scrumteam that visit office only once a week. Ofcourse there are other scrum teams visiting office daily but I personally dread even going to office.
Nobody is waiting for me in there. What's the point if when I need to ask something I have to always call someone? I can do it from home, no need to go to the office.
My manager dropped the ball and basically disappeared after first 2 days of helping me setting up, we had just two biweekly half-assed 1on1’s where he basically rants about some stuff but doesn’t track my progress at all. I bet he doesn’t even know what I’m working on. Everything he seems to be concerned about is that I come to work into office atleast 3 days a week and then I can work remaining 2 days from home.
I feel like they are treating me as a mid level dev where I have to figure out everything by myself and actual feedback is given only in code reviews. I have no idea what is the expectation of me and wether Im doing good or well. Only my team business analyst praised me once saying that I had a strong onboarding start and I am moving baldly forward… What onboarding? It was just me and documentation and calling everybody asking questions…
My teammates didn't even bother accepting me into a team or giving me a basic code overview, we interact mainly in fucking code review comments or when I awkwardly call them when I already wasted days on something and feel like I'm missing some knowledge and I am to the point where I don't cere if they are awkward, I just ask what I need to know.
Seriously when my probation is done (after 6 weeks) I'm thinking of asking for a 43% raise because I am even sacrificing weekends to catch up with this fucked up broken phone communication style where I have to figure out everything by myself. I will have MR's to prove that I was able to contribute from week 1 so my ass is covered.
I even heard that a fresh uni graduate with 0 android experience was hired just for 15% les salary then me. I compared our output, I am doing much better so I definetly feel that Im worthy of a raise. Also I am getting a hang of codebase and expected codestyle, so either these fuckers will pay for it or I will go somewhere else to work for even less salary as long as I get some decent mentoring and have a decent team with decent culture. A place where I could close my laptop and go home instead of wasting time catching up and always feel behind. I want to see people around me who have some emotional intelligene, not some robots who care only about their own work and never interact.4 -
"Code"
And the website says "Lonely geeky people do need apply"
So I put my on my glasses and I went in to ask him why
He said you look like a fine outstanding young man, I think you'll do
So I shook his hand and, I said "I am glad I will be working for you."
Code, code, everywhere there's code
Neo vision, tweakin' my mind
Do code this, and API that, can't you read the fucking manual
And the sign says "If you want to use this site you must accept our cookies"
So I found the CEOs address and doxxed him all night!
To put up a dialog and block content from my sight.
If Todd was here, he'd tell it to your face, man, "it just works"
Code, code, everywhere there's code
Neo vision, tweakin' my mind
Do code this, and API that, can't you read the fucking manual
Oh, say now mister, can't you code
You got to have a laptop and a hoodie to get a job
You can't work, no you can't standup, you ain't supposed to be here
And the website says "You got to have an employee ID to get inside" - yo!
And the website says "Everybody welcome, come in, code and share"
But then they passed around a git pull at the end of it all
And I didn't have a character to code
So I got me laptop and I made up my own fuckin' code
I typed, "Thank you OSS for thinking 'bout me, I'm alive and doing fine", yeah
Code, code, everywhere there's code
Neo vision, tweakin' my mind
Do code this, and API that, can't you read the fucking manual
Code, code, everywhere there's code
Neo vision, tweakin' my mind
Do code this, and API that, can't you read the fucking manual
Yes! Some old song, called "Code code", I wish we did write that one, but
We didn't - git blame!
Hello World!6 -
I was 7 years old, and my mom’s friend brought me their old computer as a new year present. I was absolutely happy that day, because I wanted my own computer as far back as I can remember. I spent that evening exploring russian psychological (!) sex quiz (!!) with pictures (!!!) :D I found it on C:\
Actually no, there is an earlier memory. I was four, and I really wanted to mess around with my sis’ computer, it was some kind of holiday, maybe the new year as well. They won’t let me do it, and being an engineer, I took a rectangle-shaped candy box and made a “laptop” out of it. I remember drawing the screen, the icons and stuff. And plastic mold that actually handles candy, I turned upside down, and the candy cavities became sort of “buttons” I could press.2 -
My laptop is having some power issues and it often turns off randomly.
Last time, it happened while running some git stuff and since git didn't finish properly, the whole git directory fucked up: I could not do anything with git anymore.
Later I find this dude: https://stackoverflow.com/a/...
If you're in here, Nathan VanHoudnos, just know that you save more lives than any politician1 -
During a work assignment, I had done my fair share of the assignment so I could enjoy my weekend at a party. Half way through, I find out my group hadn’t even started and didn’t know where to start so I basically spent my weekend on the booze and running to and from my laptop (in a shared room) trying to get this over the line.

So i have been thinking of buying a MacBook, but am pretty concerned since it currently does not favour my work and interests. I constantly require various emulators of lower sdks as well as emulators of TV/watch for company work. and i have interest in backend/containers , for which i have heard that m1 does not support virtualisation yet. Can anyone share there experience in this domain? Like what is the expected timeline for a processor like m1 to become mainstream and supported by softwares? its 2 years already and macbooks are currently the fastest available laptops, but only for a limited softwares
Google is doing its best but very slowly. I can see on my company's m1 that a very few emulator images are supported by armv8a but their forums say they are actively working on it. weirdly , they have a decent support for many intel processors. I think an i911th gen laptop will also come under the same budget as m1 pro 32gb but don't know which company laptop to buy that isn't a plastic hotshit. I am also not sure about ryzen based processors. heard they are very nice and power friendly , but they pose the same concerns as m1 i guess (docker/virtual box users , anyone?)
My other concern with a non apple laptop is the battery. do you peeps' laptops give any decent battery timings? I hate windows/linux laptops for many reasons, but shitty display, ugly hangs and poor battery are my main "am out" areas.
Source: currently struggling with a 3 years old HP pavillion laptop whose battery goes out in 50 mins and whose screen is so shitty that i can see pixels through a text word and the letters are all blurry and worn out26 -
Since my XPS battery is dying I'm flirting with an idea of a new laptop. Requirements:
- 13" display
- 4k display (I'm so used to high-res that x1080 looks like accessibility mode)
- 16 (worst case), 32 (OK), 64 (possible?) GB RAM
- long battery life
- i7 or Ryzen equivalent (I need lots of ram, lots of computing power)
- plays nice with Linux
- GPU preferably integrated (don't need a separate GPU)
- ultrabook (small, compact, light) (I don't like to exercise while carrying it. God forbid I'd grow a muscle... )
- purrrrtty :)
So far the best candidate I've found is... XPS13 again :D The setup I'm after costs ~1.6k€ which is not that bad, really.
Is there anything else in the market that'd meet the criteria? Anything worth looking into? Better deals?21 -

If I was rich I think I'd donate to schools and children educational funds a lot
There's so much more that I've been able to learn about and do now that I have my own income stream and it's not just my dad supporting me and my 2 brothers himself. so I have the means to buy a server off eBay, or get books every few months on topics I find interesting, or upgrade my ram to an obscene 48GB to toy with ML and AI from my desktop when the whim arises, as well as all the stuff I'm learning to do with raspberry pi boards and my 3D printers, and the laptops I collect from people about to toss good fixable electronics
So I think I'd want to open the same doors for other children if I ever could who knows how much farther I could be if I had this same access when I was younger and didn't get access to my first 'personal' laptop when I was already 14 or 15 years old
I still consider my childhood 'lucky' and I had many opportunities other children couldn't get, but if I ever could I think I'd like to make future children have more opportunities in general1 -
Smart glasses. There is one kind of them, which is pretty much my childhood dream to have. A kind if glasses that I can use to display contents as I do today with my multiple monitors. Is there something like that on the market? Must work with a laptop, not a phone.
Merry Christmas or holidays or whatever's you're celebrating today for everyone here btw.3 -
my quest for the next laptop. (previous discussions: https://devrant.com/rants/5050863)
i have decided on going with a macbook , since non apple laptops are coming with defacto flaws(poor battery life and uncomfortable screen) whereas macbook m1 are coming with flaws that will hopefully get automatically eradicated(aka lack of support from various softwares. i got an official response from google that more emulators are going to be supported in next few months :D)
furthermore i researched a bit on macbook prices and holy shit the mgmt at apple has really gone all numbers on it.
based on my previous results on what combination of ram/ssd/processor will last next 5-7 years for me, i put 1tb and 16gb ram as constants and the mac's product/processor lineup was very fascinating to me as a developer
here is a summary : https://imgur.com/a/7QQDtu1
basically if i ignore the gpu ,
apple macbook air = the price of 30gm gold (and will easily last 4-5 years for the mentioned combination)
apple mbp = air + a fan + inr 30k . holy shit, m1 macs rarely run fans even for big projects and an external fan is just rs 2000
apple m1 pro = apple mb air + fan + 2 additional cpu cores + 85k . so just a 2 core addition = 4 threads addition for a price of an intel i5 8th gen laptop.
so folks i am thinking of cheaping out a little and buying the air . what do you think, is macbook air's higher end model (i.e the one i have in the image ) worth for a fullstack dev?10 -
So, Our company called us back to office after 8 month.. and reason was our boss is giving.. You guys may be work on bed.. It is bad for your back.. Here we will provide you better working enviornment and please do carry your laptop to office :P
But I think its okay to work from office.. Once I was excited to work from home. But dude you can learn from the person sitting next to you, discuss things around,, can see what others are doing.. Its a progress. At home you are just u and laptop :)
Personally I think its better to work under someone superior obvious he/she should be technical and egoless.. then its more fun.3 -
some call
- yo bro do you have some time ?
- quick cause I'm taking a dump
- I think I have been hacked, got black screen kernel panick, linux freeze seldomly I have to reboot, no internet connexion
- save your stuff and reinstall linux
- I don't have enough stockage to backup
- Then buy one and save, probably either OS is fcked up or you have some hdd problems
Time that it will take: ~30min to reinstall whole shit
Peace duration: ~2years
Later on the same day
aunt
- I can't log into windows
- Did you change the password ?
- Yes but it does not work anymore
* looking at shit
* logs successfully. Reason: interface changed after automatic update.
* wait.
* wait some more so fucking windows fucking starts
* Desktop is ugly as fck.
* Some stupid settings messed up (like high contrast set, black theme or so)
aunt (the same)
- I can't log into my (other) laptop either
* logs
* wait more more more
Guess what: automatic updaaaates. Freezes 100%cpu
* Being a very experienced user: wait before reboot because this suckass os will probably fail to boot otherwise
* Blackscreen with a percentage: Installing updates...
* reboots
* Blackscreen with a percentage: Installing updates continuing...
* finally boot (feels like a miracle windows succeeds lol)
* still slow
aunt now sleeps
* look at running process and install programs
* sees shits like camera recognition (vendor installed), candycrush
* occasionnaly get adds
time lost: 2h
peace duration: ~3month
FFS I am a dev, not a fucking trash lover
It is already pain to fix someone os, but windows is the cream of cream
It brings no ease of use for novice user
It is so insanely slow
It has stupid settings set up by default!!!!!!!! Who FFS wants candycrush and ads
The maj are so fcking hazardous. It is 2022 pretty much the same as 15y back then. Updates take fucking eternity. And needs reboot. and are not even finished!!!
I swear I am gonna stretch my ass and install linux and any fckin other toolsuite needed so they can use Micro$$ word, which is the only fucking usecase they need windows for in the first case anyway
I SO wish this OS would die
I mean, even more than safari8 -
So Steam Deck is like a tiny PC, lets you play PC games on a tiny monitor?
Why would you want that? vs buying a gaming laptop/desktop
Assuming you already don't have one... And well if you do, why would you buy this?
Sense more like a downgrade?19 -
Quest..
To copy a file from a Windows Phone ( Lumia series. ) to a Windows 10 desktop PC, what are my options ?
Ideally I'd like simple solutions that don't involve lots of complications, or sending files several times around the world to get to my PC, something simple and local would be peachy.
Since my previous phone about 20 years old, involved a USB cable, some software that doesn't like to run on Windows 10..
Surely we have come along a bit since then, right..
Is there some magic app/etc. that gives me a folder on my Windows Phone that I can just copy stuff too and it magically appears on my PC..
Yes I have Wifi, no I don't really have any servers under the dining room table anymore, but there is a Vista laptop running the doorbell..
So, my options ?10 -
New office stories during the emotional turmoil...
Story 1: The creepy fuck
So being unaware of the fact that I was connected with this guy on LinkedIn already.
Ron walks upto my desk and greets me on my first day on floor. Weird, but whatever.
I politely interact, because gotta make friends and create my following to get shit done.
The next day, randomly comes asking for a laptop sticker and I am like WTF! He is like sticker was an excuse, I just wanted to say Hi!
👀
Day 3: same random creep shit. Talks about personal topics and invades personal space uninvited.
Day 4: Keeps starring at me while I ignore and judges me evidently with stupid suggestions on how to exist without being asked for.
Fuck this guy.
Story 2: The classic case of Dunning Kruger effect
So I get introduced to my tech team today and everyone start piling on me to guide them on decision making. The CTO creates a Slack thread with me and Co-founder asking me to get things moving on priority.
The co-founder shut him out right away. Fucking hilarious.
But, a retard starts schooling me on how to use Slack. Lmfao.
Me being polite, said I'll follow.. dude starts bragging on how he wrote company policy to get everyone on Slack yada yada..
To be honest, the Slack experience is beyond broken based on what these idiot has setup.
He literally opened my Slack and responded to the CTO thread.
That's where I got pissed. I upfront told him that hey! Calm your tiddies down. I know how to use Slack. I have used it since it was in the beta.
I have been in much much mucy bigger orgs and places more well structured than what you have here.
I told him on his face what the flaws where and how I felt a downgrade from where I am coming from.
The look on his face was priceless and he started sweating. Lol
Never again he'll school anyone.
I mean I understand if you are humble and genuinely guiding a new hire. But being cocky unnecessarily and shoving things down my throat without yourself knowing shit or know about the other person is purely asshole move.
Anyway, I am still upset about the scam. Fuck this world.9 -
I say, I say, I say, how many hours does it take to set up a smart light blub ?
Well, it just took me 6 hours to get 2 bulbs working with Alexa..
This involved bulb resetting without a hub, an Android tablet ( Without the correct level of OS to run the more advanced version of the Alexa APP or the smart blub app.. ), a laptop, a web interface, a wireless network, and lots of running up and down stairs..
It wasn't "easy as pie"..
It proved pointless registering with the smart bulb website, since it couldn't see the bulbs..
For a while the bulbs thought they was twins, and one would copy the other..
But one was always unresponsive when you wanted to chat to it..
After reset, which was buried in a long RPG style quest, all was kinda well. ( It now thinks there are 3 bulbs, but lets not worry about that.. )

so once upon a time, my company gave me a mac and after 6 months I broke it. I was so careful with it that I covered it with a full-body laptop hard shell and guess what? the hard shell got brittle over time, started dropping small pieces of plastics here and there, one got stuck b/w my laptop's hinge and one fine night of over coding, I just closed the lid and bam! a pea-shaped crack on the "pro" of MacBook pro label.
Fortunately, the company didn't cut its cost out of my salary.
cut to today I recently bought a MacBook of my own and fuck its screen is so thin and scary. I bought another mac shell, this time from UAG which makes a shell so hard, it can drop but not break.
But on the down side that shell is now clinging to my screen with so much force i am panicking more than when it did NOT had the back cover
Why is it so difficult to protect this thin piecy of shit beautiful display?9 -
got kicked out of a contract today because the owner felt I wasn't moving at the pace he wanted, there were no milestones but even i knew I was slow.
this happened when I started talking to a therapist because I was beginning to have suicidal thoughts and anxiety issues.
I had to run work errands for my everly screaming mom and manipulative dad.
these same people who I begged with no success for money to buy a used core 2 duo laptop for programming projects.
I was in the bus in the afternoon sun trying to get three books from a publisher that ended up being a waste of time because she didn't follow instructions and insisted on screaming over the phone at the attendant. the client requested a meeting and I couldn't respond positively,
I get home and my dad wants me to travel down to our village home to meet with some kid he kept giving money because they wanted to have a meeting. I'm so annoyed because I told him I wanted this week off to face this already dead contract and he just ignores all of that and fixes a meeting.
I pay for electricity and gas for these people and they still treat me like shit. fuck this !1 -
wtf is JAMF? a quick look on internet and i can see that its a worst tracking software i guess. remote code execution, network tracking, app usage , system logging, keystroke tracking(maybe), this shit does everything you don't want. I guess this is the end of my devrant, pornhub, leetcode, freelancing, travel booking and everything that i would do on an office laptop while considering it as my own.
"Best remote work culture" my ass. if they can't trust their devs then why even bother letting them work from home? deport them to fucking Guantanamo bay, no?
This is a shitty situation . What do i do now? Install a vpn? will that work? please share names of some good and affordable vpns
i will have to check on this JAMF shit to see if i am able to keep my personal life away from its prying eyes. if not i guess i will have to buy a new device.
what do you people do? are you able to switch context b/w the 2 of your devices easily?I am shit at multi tasking7 -
Recently changed my laptop over to Linux. Now I have to write twice as many bat/shell files for every project.10
-
What's your opinion on the framework laptop? I really like the concept and would love to get one, but I don't live in the US and I sadly can't get it yet1
-
ugh... laptops are like , crazy addictions.
1 year ago, my hp laptop was the best for me, building android studio apps , keeping daily backups of all my home's appliances comfortably in it, running games and various softwares . i would carry it anywhere without fearing of any damage thanks to heavy cases and keyboard covers.
till i started my first job who gave me an intel mac to work with.I got a revised definition of a laptop. laptops are not what i knew .
- a laptop is something which does not take 20+ minutes to build android apps and can build in 60 seconds too
- a laptop is something which does not need to have a shitty plastic body and can have a high quality metal body.
- a laptop is something which does not need to have a shitty screen and can have a really clear (but fragile /s) HQ screen.
and
- a laptop is something which does not necessarily gives you ports. /s
- a laptop is something which does not necessarily needs large storage to store your stuff. /s
- INR 60K (or half of my 1st year college fees) isn't apparently not enough for a laptop
- a laptop can cost TONS to get fixed /s
.....
now , i did have learned all this and even after all the flaws , i feel like inclined towards buying a macbook. however coming from a typical lower class family from india , who DID break a laptop screen in 1 year, i am having some serious concerns buying a laptop , a 16 inch piece of aluminium for 300K (almost the cost of my four years of graduation)
but compared to that , i also have concerns buying any laptop above 100k because that's a lot of money , even though I could afford it. the whole point is, my non tech grocery seller parents worked too hard for very less money . i am in tech profile, i believe my work is not that much physically intensive, and i work half as hard as those guys , nd earn good yet spending SO MUCH feels like being an idiot
oh the headache :/11 -
About to start my new job (on Monday).
I went to the new office once to get the new work laptop (a fucking Mac).
They also told me be fast in setting up the work email as the client i'll be working on will send some instruction on how to use their accounts.
Even heard them since... hopefully they'll just pay me for doing basically nothing as I now have literally NOTHING to work on when I'll start.
Also, they told me something about the project I'll be working on, and to be honest, the whole project would take about 2 months to be done from scratch, but we have until November to make it work... I'm so fucking confused!2 -
going back to my personal windows laptop till the time new company provides me a new mac, i gotta say i missed this. I don't know, but i think i can never be a extreme mac os or linux fan as much as i like windows (even though my next personal laptop is also going to be a macbook for sure)
mac has the best performance out there when running emulators or heavy intellij ides, but the user experience in windows is 💋💋
i missed how my cursor ran like a tiger on arrow keys press, the ability to create files on right click, having multiple hard drives and organising my files/folders there, being able to control program locations... all these stuff is cool to me. when i was using ubuntu , i could surely do all these stuff too, but it still felt a little unpolished.
i know am about to get roasted in the comment section. so let's begin 😂3 -
Anyone else get frustrated by the dust that sits on top of your computer?
Fuck me but I fucking hate this dusty shit, keep cleaning the screen and the keypad but oh well, next time I open there it is - all in its glory.
And there's this fucking constant worry that shit that dust might've gotten inside the laptop and now the performance is gonna fuck up.
SO FUCKING IRRITATING AARGH3 -
Used another charger on my laptop (same manufacturer). Moments later battery icon starts flashing and notifications pop up about it "maybe needing to be replaced".
Hmmm....5 -
Back in the day when I was a student, I travelled for almost 3 hours by train multiple times per month... I played Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 on my laptop all the way. Surprisingly, even while wearing large headphones, I connected with many people who saw me playing a game that they loved.
RCT2 remains a brilliant game today. The OpenRCT2 project is very well maintained and I can highly recommend it if you want to play it on your modern computer. -
Everyone’s first computer seems to be a genuine piece of history.
Mine is a laptop from 2008 that I still use as a media hub for my TV. -

To all the M1 Macbook owners out there that use it for software development - do you regret your pick? If so, why (or what doesn't work)?4

7 monthos ago, i invested a ridiculus amount of money on crypto. The day this month i decided to buy a battery for my loved laptop, i was notified that this crypto had doubled its price. Thanks Lord My God, i said, without any work and stress, i had 100% profit, i would totally buy the battery from the new money, i converted them all in euros, and started my odyssey.
Well, the platform, need 2fa to withdraw your money. But it did not inform you, it only had a popup saying "Reming me later".
WTF means "remind me later", for me it is something optional!!!! No red colours, no messages like (try again, your transactionr requires this ) etc.
Time is the only resource that do not come back, and i feel that my profit is already less, since the hour i spent searching, and searching, and then searching the chat (which is very well hidden...) and then chatting, and then writting this rant, i could have worked for the same amount of money.....3 -

I have been using Linux for a while and I get update notification about 3 times per week. I find it annoying. As soon as I plan to get some work done, I get a large notification popup saying "Hey, it's time to install le updates". I find it distracting; especially so because I use my laptop about 3 times per week; so basically EVERY TIME when I'm about to use it, it says "HEY you know what? Time for UPDATES".
Updates on Windows are annoying too; but at least they do not appear as often. I find this unacceptable and I do not know how anyone could think that distracting people from work so often is "ok". This is bad.11
