I bought a System76 laptop. They're headquartered in the same city where I live. In the "special instructions" section of the checkout process, I put, "I'm buying this because Apple took away my escape key."
This note came today.30
My friend: OMG OMG OMG My laptop is dead!
Me: What do you mean it's dead? It doesn't even turn on?
My friend: Nooo, it does nothing?
Me: Are you sure it's plugged in?
My friend: Yesss
Me: You sure?
My friend: Yess, it's actually plugged into a multiple socket thingy...
Me: And that thing is plugged in to the wall..?
My friend: Well duh!
Me: And did you turn the switch on?
My friend: Of course I....oh, wait!! Never mind!!!!!
// sorry, again a story not a rant
Category->type = 'Story';
Today at work I got a strange email
'about your msi laptop'
(Some background information, a few months ago I went on vacation and left my work laptop at home. Long story short some one broke in and stole my msi laptop)
So this email had my interest. I opened it and the content was something like:
Hi! My name is x, I clean/repair laptops partime and I noticed your personal information on this laptop, normally people whipe their data from their laptop before selling so this is just a double check, if the laptop was stolen please call me on xxx
If I hear nothing I'll assume its alright and will whipe your data
So of course I immediately called him, after a conversation I informed the police who is now working on the case7
Sister comes into my room
"Can you look at moms laptop, it stopped working I'm scared I broke it"
"Idk it just stopped working, all I did was install adobe flash player I dont think that could do it could it?"
Take a look
"EFI IPV4 0 (error code) failed to boot"
Weird. Enter bios
"Hard drive: [Not detected]"
Well, that's no bueno
Pop open back, hard drive is loose
Pfft, push that fucker back in
Boot -> works
"Mom is going to kill me I broke it im so worried" -> relieved laughter
My old laptop had an ear bud warmer right here. This new one is defective, those ear buds are still cold.6
So, I just got up, opened my sister's laptop to work (she gave it to me while I was in this small trip) and I see this. She was like "if you break it, I'm gonna kill you" and I said "oh no! What am I gonna do? Hammer it or something?" Fuck my luck, seriously19
Just took apart my laptop to dust it out from the inside. Had it back together, put the battery in. "Alright, time to make sure I didn't break something"
Beep....beep beep beep....beep beep beep....beep
"FUCK I FUCKING BROKE SOMETHING WHAT DID I BREAK?"
Google Lenovo post codes (Thinkpad laptop). DIMM issue.
"Oh fuck I forgot to put the RAM back in.."
Am I the only one who prefers laptop with numpad?
I feel like keyboards without a numpad are incomplete.12
I think I’m a bit unusual in that my favorite place to code is on the couch, just using my laptop. During the work day I use two monitors, but I find it more comfortable to just use a lap desk and laptop when I get home/on weekends. I’m not sure if it’s from laziness or whatever, but it seems to work.9
Yesterday my friend told me that he bought a second hand laptop of dy. I was first shocked by the name but later i got it.6
When your internet download speed is faster than your system copy speed. Damn! I need a new laptop !!13
How millionaires deal with laptops.
1. Buy a gaming laptop.
2. Install any OS.
3. Open IE11.
4. Place cursor in the new search bar in top right.
5. Type 4k wallpapers.
6. Download anything.
7. Open in MS Photos.
8. Right click, Set as > Wallpaper BG
9. Leave it in the corner.
10. Sell it at double 2 days later.14
girl: Why is your laptop heavier than mine?
me: I have more files than yours
girl: oh! it's true, you and movies eh.
me: laughing inside... hehehe2
On a tiny vacation in another country. Don't have a converter plug (for the power sockets) so borrowed one.
*connects laptop to charger* (old charger which might die soon)
*tries different sockets*
"you might want to check your phone with that thing as the socket seems loose as hell"
*tries phone with charger that definitely works*
That was a fucking panic attack right there 😅2
I Don't want to be that guy that has stickers on his laptop that he didn't "earn" them.
That is, if I am not fluent in AWS I won't plaster their stickers, even though I attented one course one time.
Just a thought14
I had to edit it or else it would look boring af.
Just a cheap laptop
Btw: I made the photo and edit one week before knowing devRants wk119 will be devDeks xD13
My laptop was not able to boot unless plugged in because of malfunctionning built-in Intel Anti theft technology.
Turns out its deprecated and there is a software available to remove it
So I installed windows to be able to run it but it was not working no matter what.. Turns out it was also deprecated and not supported anymore, so there is no way to remove the faulty anti theft system..
I sent my laptop to ASUS so they could find a way to remove the software and I got the reply "we will have to change the motherboard, it will cost $600"
No way I am paying this much for something that was supposed to be a software problem so I asked them to cancel and send it back
Now I got it back and its not even booting anymore and theres a few screws missing
Dad: you should buy a laptop now
Me: But i just upgraded my pc
Dad: all your friends have their own laptop, you should buy too
Me: but i find pc comfortable
Dad: what if you need to work at college? You could carry your laptop to college
Me: dad! Every college have pcs for students to work
Dad: whenever i want to use the pc, i find you there. I never get to use it!
Me: New laptop sounds good to me5
Since everyone is posting their system, I'll do it now, too:
- Type: Laptop
- Age: about 5 years
- Weight: 2-3 kg (too much)
- Modifications: Paper below problematic keys; Samsung Evo 850 250GB SSD
- Usecase: School-Laptop with every Office-Suite I could find.
- Pros: Wrecks my PC with the boottime (Gnome > KDE); Looks really sick; Really lightweight Arch installed; Quiet when not under load
- Cons: Really heavy; Battery old and unreliable; Bluetooth stops working after closing lid13
My laptop started making faint high-pitched noises - I hope I misheard and it's actually just some coil singing inside the power-supply and not one of the disks/something else - also, I seem to have dropped 4GB of RAM suddenly where there should be 8GB.
(Also, I should really wipe the messed up dual-boot still residing on disk from last semester and replace it by a fresh arch-only install. (No time and joy in debugging that right now.) Probably something for tomorrow evening.)
The device is ~8 years old by now and starting to fall apart - nothing duct tape can't fix - but I'm somewhat worried about the rest right now. D:
Meh, I really need that laptop during the next two weeks, I just hope the hardware doesn't die on me in the meantime because I can't wait for an order to arrive, let alone afford some cheap replacement.11
Finally got time to share my new laptop. I love its rgb backlight keyboard. I will buy a NVMe SSD and second monitor asap.7
I was on the beach with my work laptop in my backpack in sleep mode. I lifted the backpack and saw water dripping out. The stupid plastic water bottle had failed. Let's hope that my master thesis is still alive. Pray for the HP.9
Why would someone do this to his/her laptop????
There is a point after which this "stickers on a laptop" thing starts looking like shit, and in this case the point is long gone. Also at this point most of the stickers start to lose meaning.16
I miss laptop keyboards like this...
Look at delete and esc buttons!
P.S.: No commercials here..you can't find this anymore! Even that company stopped from produce laptop like this..!17
So the new laptop stopped powering on. Nothing I did worked, so I used the warranty service. I probably should have taken the SSD out...20
Not being able to raise volume of my laptop with only one hand because the fn and f11 keys are just one hand and 3mm apart really kills me !3
So I had to buy a laptop
I had a Lenovo G50-70 (2014) it was really good, mid-range i5, 6GB of RAM and to speed it up I've installed an SSD. 3 years (and some formatting) later it started being slow, I couldn't even play Minecraft anymore (and the battery was dying)
This year we're learning and using PCs for the first (real) time, so I needed a good laptop.
I started searching everywhere, Google, shops, Amazon... (Excluding HP and Acers for good reasons 😂) so I've found this Asus, which isn't really famous, but the model is UX510UX.
FHD display, Nvidia 950M, i7-7500U, really good battery, 8GB of RAM, 1TB of hard disk
I bought an additional 128GB M.2 SSD from WD (I'm sorry but I can't live with a HDD 😂)
All of this for ~700€
I'm very happy for the purchase, the laptop is all metal (pinky bronze, but I like it)
It's really powerful, I can play GTA with mid-high details without any lag. (Remember, I play GTA on the desktop with a 1080 Ti so my standards are high)
I'm happy 😄!22
Dear Laptop manufacturers,
Why the FUCK would you place the power button where the 'Delete' should be? Just so that you accidentally can turn off your pc while typing? Fuck you.
If anyone know a good laptop that is thin and light, 14" and has the power button outside of the keyboard area, please tell me.12
Summer is coming, and i suppose all of you will buy a new barbecue to cook some meat, but i have another economic alternative.
How to make a homemade bbq:
1) Take an old laptop
2) Turn it on
3) Install Android studio (also works with intellij)
4) Add a lot of gradle (or maven) depencies
5) Code something cool (or not)
6) Build and compile it
7) Now you can put your meat on your laptop
8) Enjoy your meal13
I just dropped my office laptop !
There is a crack on the corner of the body but the device is Ok !
I am worried they will charge me the whole cost of the laptop ( i.e. 3 months worth salary )21
I have my laptop for almost two years now. I've never dropped it once, even though I carry it a lot. So I decided to buy a plastic case this Monday. Just in case.
It's Saturday and I dropped it 3 times already. Shit. --> Never buy a case for your laptop.
* It did it's job though.
* No damage on the device,
* just on the case
"Time to install Arch Linux!"
*8 hours later*
"Back to Open Suse!"
Repeat every 4-5 months.
Seriously, I would LOVE to get Arch running on my laptop, but everytime I try to something goes wrong, be it bootloader, audio, cooptimus drivers, undetected network card, window manager going crazy, etc etc etc... and I simply end giving up and reinstalling my backup.
Someday, Arch, someday...6
Just received my $1 UnixStickers pack in the mail. Can't wait to put these on my laptop. Kinda sad that the Arch stickers won't really have a place on my Ubuntu laptop, but I'm sure I could find a use for them somewhere else.6
I'm proud to announce that my work laptop has been officially devRanted!!!
Ps: Boss going to kill me, but fuck him anyway!9
Scariest thing I've ever experienced...
Was compiling a mod and left my laptop alone to do it's thing while I went to the bathroom. A couple of minutes later I started to smell something burning.
Rushed back to my laptop and everything was ok.
Turns out with all the coding I forgot about my toasts...1
Me: I am ready to marry my soulmate.
Everyone: Who's the luck girl?
Me: My laptop.
Ps: should i try it on april fool?7
That moment when you make heads turn, coz you are using laptop with loads of devRant sticker on it in metro.....
I guess I had an EMP attack in my home.In a single day my laptop charger burst,my desktop monitor got damaged and my Lumia phone has stopped opening.Dont know what to do13
Recent experience (#2)
- a cousin wanted to reinstall Windows on his laptop
- gave it to a tech shop
- they couldn't, said hard disk faulty
- I took the laptop hoping that it's just a partition table issue
- I tried changing partition table from MBR to GPT, but failed
- removed his hard disk from his laptop and plugged into mine
- tried and failed
- so I thought I would give it a chance with Ubuntu
- tried and ... 👍
- reinstalled his hard disk in his laptop
- works like a charm
- want to see what complaints he comes up with
- he is not a tech guy
- let's see how he manages to use it for his daily tasks21
I needed a new laptop to work/study and found a suitable one on Lenovo's website...
25th of july :
- "your order has been placed... blablabla.. it will take approximately from 1 to 2 weeks to prepare and 3-5 days shipping.."
- hum... Ok.. seems long to just put RAM and SSD inside my laptop but alright..
31st of july :
- "unfortunately your order has been delayed, the new shipping date is estimated for August, 14"
- Fuck ! Ill be patient then.. hopefully it'll be ready earlier than that..
10th of August :
- "unfortunately your order has been delayed, the new shipping date is estimated for september, 7"
- WHAT THE FU.. ?!? YOU DENSE MOTHERFUCKER, HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PUT 8 FUCKING GIGS OF RAM AND AN SSD PLEASE TELL ME ?!? IS IT A JOKE OR WHAT ?! I FLY ABROAD THE 17TH OF SEPTEMBER YOU BETTER SHIP MY LAPTOP IN TIME !!
I'm really mad now and thinking of cancelling the order.. I might have no time to test the laptop before flying.. FUCK !!6
TL;DR - Developers, do not buy HP Stream models laptop unless they are selling at $1.
Cannot even handle Sublime + Firefox + LAMP use case well. On lubuntu OS with literally nothing else on it. Sublime crashes every hour.
Now I am learning how to code using other tools before I can buy a better replacement for it. Failure with gedit; very slow and sluggish. Currently trying Geany.
It's a pain in the ass to learn new tool especially when you are so accustomed to something. 😣17
When your work laptop decides it wants to take 45 minutes to update Monday morning...
(I'm looking at you MacOs...)11
Worst part about getting a new laptop: losing all my stickers
Best part of getting a new laptop: New Stickers!1
So this is my setup,
An over heating partially broken laptop with external Monitor.. 😭😭
Show yours 🤔8
I'm sick of these careless motherfuckers everywhere.
I left laptop in class(in my bag on the table) to get lunch. when I got back, the bag was on the floor. I'm sure some careless fatherless motherfucker dropped it.
guess what, the laptop's broken and is not turning on.
The keyboard backlight, power and battery LEDs, and the fans are working, and I have no idea about the rest.
I really hope it's just something gone loose and nothing broken10
Feels good to brought dead laptop to life.
Got dead laptop(person who gave it to me for free, said it doesn't turn on, and he got new one and this one is just for recycling), which got some liquid. Changed palmrest, keyboard, changed cable which is connecting to io board with power button, changed thermal paste and it working like a charm. Maybe in the future I will change screen. Screen has some pink spots, but it's only visible on dar theme. Added 16 GB ram, 512 gb ssd. Now I am using it as work computer. Dell Latitude E74509
Really wish we would see some OLED equipped laptops, we have massive 4K OLED TV's and Tony high resolution smartphone displays, why can't we just get a nice 1080p OLED panel, makes so much sense in a laptop IMO3
I had written a script to take a photo every time the laptop lid is open an year ago. It's like about 3000 images now and it's really pretty to do like a timelapse. Do it and you won't will never regret.2
When you get a laptop that comes with freeDOS?
Link, just in case: http://ebuyer.com/786174-hp-255-g5-...
Yeah, it's a bit long. Sorry.18
Just bought my my first laptop!
I've had a PC desktop but this is the first laptop of my own! What do you guys recommend I should install from a programmer perspective? Any software you can't live without?25
Anyone else hate their Macbook Pro 2018? RIGHT after the return policy the speakers start acting like it has fucking tourette's, plus my machine randomly SHUTS DOWN.
Apple Store "Genius": "Yup, we gotta send it in for repair, 10 business days."
10 business days without my work laptop, gee thanks asshole, at least be a little more empathetic about it.
My 2015 Macbook Pro gave me ZERO problems. The only reason why I upgraded was that compiling took forever (React Native).
If I didn't have to work with Xcode I would just sell this thing and buy a PC laptop. (The Surface book looks nice =))11
Thinking of making my own laptop stickers:
- Buy letter size sticker paper
- Print multiple logos/icons on sticker paper
- if needed, laminate the front side of the sticker paper with a thermal laminator (wife has one)
- Cut the stickers out
I will report back with the results and pictures later. I assume they will end up a bit thick if I laminate them.7
So, brand new laptop. Running an i5-7200U, 8gb of RAM, just put a 1tb SSD in there. Even has an optical drive my dudes! Also got a nice lineup of new mechanical pencils cause my mom is a fucking boss. Today's been a good day.
Merry Christmas everyone!
Black Friday is the time where you consider to buy a new laptop and finds that laptop companies don't know how to make one for programmers. Either they are shit or they are gamer laptop that have 2~4 GB of video memory you will never use and costs thousands of dollars.
Is it hard to make one with good CPU, RAM and a SSD without concluding that you are a hardcore gamer and you need an expensive video card along with it?10
Small update to this rant
A classmate of mine lend me his old laptop with an SSD and an HDD and I could install Ubuntu Budgie on it and use it while my laptop is under repairment. The thing is, this temporary laptop is pretty awesome and fast and the fact that I don't have to deal with all the NVidia proprietary drivers and other gaming laptop bs makes me pretty happy
Update to the story above: the HDD of the temporary laptop died (didn't have anything important on it, so no problem). But I must be going through some bad omen tech times, since, beside my laptop and this HDD dying, my cooking plate, inflatable mattress, some sockets and lightbulbs broke inside my apartment. Hail!
When you buy new laptop battery and on the next day you spill beer all over the keyboard making laptop totally useless.11
Got my new laptop today!
Traded my old laptop..
The devRant stickers were too difficult to remove, so I had to part with them. :(2
My laptop just died for the third time.
Need to buy a new one. Not a mac.
Linux machine with 15" screen, sdd, usb c, with 8gb ram and a graphics processor.
Lying to your misses about the purchase price of a new laptop - protecting the relationship or just plain wrong?6
I made the switch and my laptop is thanking me. The laptop is SATA II so I opted for a cheap SSD. Insane difference on boot up, shutdown, and opening programs.1
My laptop now finally refuses to connect to the company wifi, and here i am browsing bitbucket on my phone
I didn't expect me to be productive today anyway, but that's another rant.11
What kind of specs should i look for when I want to buy a laptop on which I will run Linux only?
I primarily wanna use it for coding, so running docker and an IDE shouldn't cause performance problems. I am not very versed in hardware, so any input is appreciated!9
So I'm about to buy a laptop, and as any good developer Im already thinking on what are the first things I'm going to do with it, so far I've this list:
1- Enter BIOS and make sure everything is right.
2- Boot and configure all the crap that Windows asks
3- Download and install chrome and uTorrent
4- Download Fedora
4.5- Format the HHD
5- Partition my SSD and install fedora
6- Configure my dev environment, IDEs, runtimes, git aliases etc
7- Install Windows in another partition.
I'm I the only one with a routine?11
Got a new laptop, but it was not properly working, so while waiting for it to get replaced, I have to use the old one again.
Feels like the CPU is a freaking potato!2
Laptop has died. This is probably a significant blocker to development...
Oh well time to buy a new one I guess!3
So it's 2018 and i am wondering is there a:
Laptop with at least 16go of ram that can last AT LEAST 24 hours ?
Work related stuff
No Apple products please
Ps: i already got a couple of laptops so i am not in a hurry i am more looking for something that i can carry around while traveling in a lightweight manner14
Fuck, I did not know it was possible to wait this long for something to boot up. Too scared to even install Visual Studio.
Downgrading from my own i7 pc with 16GB ram and an ssd to a company i3 budget laptop with 4GB ram and 5400rpm HDD.
Could never understand all this bitching about Windows 10 and how it is shit slow, but I have come to realize what everybody has been complaining about.6
Acer has a corrupt BIOS,
Lenovo is a bug fest,
HP supposedly also sucks.
So which brand of laptop does not suck?47
Some years ago but it's funny.
The company give to me a new laptop with windows Home Edition,
After few months I have installed Pro Version.
1 month later the laptop didn't work anymore, nothing on display, no beeps, zero.
Tried to replace ram and check but nothing works.
The CTO asked the supplier and they asked about SO, and they said it's not turning ON because i have installed Windows Pro.
Than the CTO had a brilliant idea: try put the hard disk in another laptop and install Windows Home, and put back in the defective one. I refused to to that, it's stupid and he insisted, then I put the laptop in his desk and I said: if you want do this you can do, im not stupid enough to do this.
He got really mad, 1 week later i got a brand new one 😅5
What do you use to develop?
If laptop which one + specs?
If desktop specs + favorite accessories?
What type of development?
Gotta make a decision matrix like the one in the picture. It's for a recommendation report concerning whether or not to distribute laptops to the CSCE students at my university and what kind of laptop if so.
I need help determining the weights for my matrix, because my personal preferences may not reflect the majority. As a programmer, how would you weigh the following three (very broad) categories?
Power(CPU, GPU, memory, HDD, I/O, etc..)
Quality (Durability, material, aesthetics, etc..)
Comfort(Weight, size, shape, keyboard, screen-eye comfort, OS familiarity, etc..)
Please write an integer 1-10 in the following format:
Power/Quality/Comfort ex: 7/4/9
-The Adderall'd-up devRant Noob, Benby16
My Lenovo X1 Carbon 4th gen came with Windows pre-installed with a ton of bloatware. Reinstalled Windows just to clean all the crap off to learn that the SSD had an MBR partition table. Wiped the entire drive to change to GPT, then reinstalled Windows again and (of course) added linux. Gotta love how companies put random bloatware and crusty partition tables on brand new technology. It's ok, laptop. You're in good hands now.1
I fell on the floor with my laptop in the company provided laptop sleeve inside a laptop bag. Now it has a ugly bend at the end. Can anything be done about this?17
I have used Mac since 2011 and I have made statements about how Windows PCs sucks.
I had to buy a Windows-laptop for engineering school and I have experienced problem after problem after problem.
It took about a month to get the right computer (I ordered online and they missed to add an extra hard drive).
I had to return the second one after 10 days because it was not able to boot.
The third one I had to send to HPs repair place in Poland for a week, because the “X”-button” did not work properly.
I have not used the computer for a couple of weeks and now I was going to create an Android Studio-project and found out that the extra hard drive is missing! (Not physically missing, it does not show up)
When I bought the computer I had to portion the disk, but this time it is not showing up in that tool either...18
The ethernet cable entry of my laptop is broken and now I have to use it with a tape! 😭😭 O don't want to take it back to the chipstore to they fix it!4
Are you using your own laptop at work? Or your company provides you with a company laptop? I use my own at work because I don't like to develop using company windows desktop.19
* sees a React sticker on a friend's laptop *
— I didn't know you are into React.
— Well, actually I've never even used it. Just had this sticker laying around and my laptop got a scratch so...2
I seriously think my Laptop is slower than me when it comes to switching between workspaces and applications.
Update to my laptop rant: https://devrant.com/rants/1822853/...
I finally got my gaming laptop back, with its motherboard changed under warranty, which was nice. Now all I gotta wait for is 1 month worth of Windows updates. Fun!1
Week started of great.... :/
I always leave my laptop at work, except this weekend. Guess what I forgot to bring to work today....
And finally I got the lovely stickers
Any suggestions about where to stick them on the laptop ? Can you please share your laptop pic 😃😃☺3
I think my laptop is living and hates me... I press shutdown (Yes the actual windows shutdown and not long-press power button) I close my Laptop, expecting it to shutdown, right? Nope... It goes to sleep mode and next time I open it up, it continues to shutdown... It's like it doesn't want to shutdown and is playing a joke on me.....13
Suggestion for a cheap, leightweight Laptop?
As I want to code outside, the screen should be bright, SD Card Slot would also be nice.
I actually wanted to buy a MacBook, but the prices are...13
Gotta learn myself through vim and tmux because I have no choice. My laptop burst and all I have is a Raspberry Pi with Raspbian core + MATE DE installed. Don't really wanna use heavy stuff with it because it'll become really snappy.
Oh well, as long as I can code.9
I honestly can't remember what the hell was wrong with me when I configured my laptop. Now I am stuck with a very decent laptop with a 200something GB hdd that is even slower than any hdd I use in my other computers. Wtf. It is ok for most Situations because I only ise it to write emails or browse the internet on the go and for the demanding jobs I have several very powerful pcs at home. But for travelling it is such a pain in the ass! I can't always upload everything to a cloud and I often don't have reliable internet connection, so I help myself with usb harddrives but that sucks as well. Argh, I need to get myself to buy a 1TB ssd. But they are so expensive!
I usually never put stickers on my laptop, as they usually fade away and leave nasty residue after a while, therefore I fucking hate having discovered stickermule, I have right now ~100$ worth of stickers favorited, I really have to hold back to not just pull the trigger on them and finally smash my laptop full of them, including my devrant stickers, that have been laying here for a long time now. 😫1
Permanently moved from Windows now.
Office Laptop: Ubuntu 18.04
Personal Laptop: Debian 10.0 (Cinnamon)12
Guess who was studying on his laptop and also had a near deadline about an university project and now admire this fab burnt monitor flat.
(About a week ago i also reiceveid and sticked devrant's sticker to it)6
Alright dev's, I have pretty much given up on ChromeOS and Chromebooks, my Samsung Chromebook Plus is far from the rock solid stable and battery sipping champion it used to be, constantly crashing, sluggish, 4 hours of battery at most, terrible android performance and the list goes on (Plus fucking bullshit Pixel device exclusive features can fuck off)
I use my Macbook Pro more than ever but the lack of being able to install Linux is a massive blow, so I'm looking for some laptop recommendations and here are the criteria.
1. Don't want a tablet
2. Prefer a clamshell but will deal with a convertibal
3. Max price of $1000 AUD (~$4.25 USD)
4. If it has dedicated graphics, prefer AMD
5. Prefer windows to not be pre-installed but can deal with it if it is
Was previously looking at the XPS line but um... Base model 13 inch is ~$1600 AUD so nope .-.
Fire away people!5
I'm thinking of buying a new laptop. But I'm sad about leaving all of these stickers (yeah I know they're pretty random)
also, should I get a macbook or not? I really like the OS but I hate it's pricetag. But i heard Apple supports their products for more than 5 years and this laptop of mine is just 3 and a half years old and it's slowing down already even on 16gb memory. IntelliJ used to run smoothly on this.
Can u guys suggest a developer friendly laptop? im not really into gaming so I wouldn't need gaming one 👨💻7
Small laptop recommendations? Highest 15" I'll be installing Linux and mostly be programming doing research etc so don't need anything too power intensive I'm currently looking at the star lite ultrabook / laptop. Needs are long battery life, great keyboard.11
So glad i moved from a desktop PC to a laptop for development. I still have 2 workstations (one at home and one at work) with 3 screens, mechanical keyboard + mouse. But if i ever have to demo to a client/PM i just un-dock and take my laptop to them. Plus if the office is loud i just go to another room.1
Well fuck. This laptop was nice, then the hinges decided to remove themselves from the mount points. Also a metal side rail mananaged break as well...
Anyone have good suggestions for laptops? Prefer machines with a distro of Linux on it, but not afraid to install9
If you guys would be so kind, what kind of laptops do you use, and what kind of work does it endures daily,
I'm thinking of buying a new personal laptop, been using company's macbook for a while, and my old laptop doesn't seem to be suitable for any decent work anymore (literally too old)24
I just bought a laptop (without OS, so i can put on linux without buying a useless windows license) on Amazon and now i can't wait for that2
Day 8 without a laptop and I am losing my mind!!! I am behind on all projects with a review coming up on Saturday!!!!😡
My MacBook fell victim to the flex gate design flaw, costing a fortune to fix. I am getting a surface book instead and it was supposed to arrive today!!!! Now they are saying there’s a delay and I don’t even know when it will arrive!!!!!!! I am losing my mind! Help! 😩 what can I do to pass the time and take my mind off being behind on projects? It hit so bad I started learning to dance from YouTube! I’m tired of reading too!!!! Help! 😰7
This is really two things in one:
1). Asking about a good gaming laptop.
2). Follow up on a post I made a while back asking for suggestions for new programming languages to learn
So right now I have a surface pro 3 i7 256gb, it's great for development, but not so great for gaming (Overwatch).
Saw the Razer Blade Stealth and thought it looked pretty nifty. Suggestions?
Also I would like to say a big thank you to all the people who told me about some really cool new languages, like Crystal, Elixir..etc.
Keyboard in my laptop died, mobo issue. Work gave me an ex-lease Dell E6430s. First thing I did was dual boot with Ubuntu 16.10 - can't believe how smooth it was. When I put Debian on my Lenovo G570 I had a ton of issues. I love Linux.
Today I almost burned my hand from touching my (metal) laptop
(Context: I left Rome: Total war running on it while it sat on a bed which meant the fans couldn't cool it and it was heating up because Rome: Total War
It's not an easy task to explain to your wife, why you need a new laptop... even if the current one has an 1.4 dual core amd APU (passmark rating: ~870) and only 4GB ram.3
My road trip still lasts for another 5 hours and my laptop does not have power anymore 😧😧😧
I could refactor or comment so much code. Maybe add even more loggings and unit tests, but noooo 😔4
So my compiler has been compiling the newest version of my compiler for about five hours now, and progressed 10% in the last hour... Looks like my poor laptop is gonna have to pull an all nighter2
Do you guys take your main laptop with you on vacation / travel abroad?
I can't afford to lose my laptop. Every work is saved in it. Some important files have been backed up to cloud. But that's it.
Can't risk getting it damaged or stolen or taken in custody when abroad.
But, if something in my server fucks up when I'm abroad, i want to be able attend it and get it addressed.
I'm thinking of buying a low cost portable laptop to use incase an emergency situation happens.
How do you guys manage such situation?10
I've been using my laptop for only 6 months ... And suddenly the screen is completely black, but the touch screen still works (super weird). Kinda freaking out after paying more than 1k$ for it and it only worked for 6 months..... 😠2
Maybe it's because I'm drunk but the extra 8gb Ram I just added to my laptop really makes it faster. Everything seems a little bit faster and I can now power up 2-3 virtual machines and IDE etc. without problems 😍
I will need a laptop for uni and I thought you guys could give me some tips on good brands/models. I want it to have at least 16GB of RAM, preferably a newer generation of i7 and dedicated NVidia graphics. The bigger the screen is the better. I don't care too much about the battery but I would like to have a few USB type A ports and some HDMI/DP outputs. The maximum price (shipping included) should be around 1000 - 1200€15
So today I went to a nearby computer shop to buy the Asus Vivobook 15.
Left that shop with not only the laptop and it's free bag, but also a free USB flashdrive, a free set of 6 glasses and a free set of casseroles!
Getting kitchenware items was the last thing I expected from a computer shop.
The sales lady was really nice too. I'm really glad I bought it offline than ordering it online, the price was same as well.4
My laptop now includes a DevRant sticker!
If you also have stickers on your laptop I would love to see them. Share photos of your laptops in the comments! :-)8
TL;DR Laptop suggestions.
I do all my work on my desktop, but I have a really shitty laptop. Been thinking about getting a better laptop. I want to use something that isn't Windows.
So any thoughts on:
- a Pixelbook
- a Mac18
Just realized HD(1366x768) screen is too small, and Eclipse UI too big.
Maybe it's time to buy a laptop!6
The past couple of weeks I've been struggling with my laptop. It regularly ran out of memory and when that happens everything runs in a snail pace. I always thought 8GB would be enough for developing software, but I was terribly wrong.
So I ordered another 8GB and installed it yesterday. Later at work I looked at the ram usage and noticed that it was up to nearly 13GB!
I have no idea how I managed to get by with only 8 for so long. 🤔
FYI: I usually have 2 to 3 IDEs and a gazillion chrome tabs open 😅7
Does the light of your laptop destroy your sleep ?
Mine REALLY does :/
Been suffering of insomnia for more than 4 months and the therapist said it's either self depression or anxiety !
Now I know : It's all my laptop's blue shade fault !!7
My Laptop just broke friendship with me 😪😫😭😭😭
My Laptop was everything for me
My Friend, My Parter, and so on..
Ohhh my Laptop I'll miss you so much...
Rant but also !rant
When I got the new remote dev job, there was no laptop purchase involved. We were down a computer at home when a desktop died and there was a lot of sharing going on with only one laptop. So we spent more than we planned to for Christmas and bought a replacement for the dead desktop so I could have more use of one for my job.
Yesterday my new boss says "Oh, we should get you a new laptop. Here's some money."
Oh well, at least this way there is more to go around!3
Any laptop suggestions? My budget is around £400, preferably AMD but Intel is acceptable
RAM isn't an issue as I have a spare 4GB ram stick
It's mainly just for programming, so a fancy GPU isn't important16
Guys, I'm planning to buy a new laptop for Dev purpose. My budget is under 45K INR. Need a laptop with 8GB RAM and I'm confused about the processor (i5 or i3 or AMD). Please suggest the processor I should choose and some laptop models meeting the above criteria.5
Did you end up with a desktop setup at home or do you strictly stick with a laptop and dock it at home?9
I need a new laptop mainly for Android Development and I am thinking of buying Macbook Air 2017.
Can you suggest me if it will work fine or should I look for other laptops.
And can you suggest some good laptops to buy in India.
BTW this will be my first Mac.22
Best laptops for mobile devs? I personally love my Surface Pro 2 its been a little workhorse and does everything I need besides booting from a flash drive. But I wanna know the communities favorite laptop.10
Got a new laptop and now need a backpack that can comfortably carry 2 laptops plus a few notebooks and other small everyday items. Any recommendations?2
So my laptop battery just turned from ~21000 MWh capacity to ~3500 MWh within one night, and it literally can't be charged above 300 MWh.... I can't even do much without it just running out of power even though my charger's plugged in... Urghhhhh thanks Lenovo for making/using cheap hardware8
I feel hopeless after Unity fails to start/run under your primary user but works fine using guest user and other user in the system. And i did my research to fix it, but none seems to work. :(
The last thing i did to my laptop that might cause the error is executed the commands below:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade6
If I have all nighters with my laptop, does it make my girlfriend?
Hey all! M gonna b buying a new laptop for programming.
I need something with like 16 gigs RAM, decent processor, SSD.
I can't buy thinkpad because well... It shud have been ~$750 but in my country, it costs $1200. And that is for the 8GB RAM config... E470... 570 isn't even available.
Hence since the lack of laptops without dedicated GPU but high configs, I basically can find 2 options:
So I wanna ask what would you guys prefer? I code in C/C++ pretty much exclusively. And I definitely like butter smooth functioning of OS.
If it ain't a MacBook, i'll b using Arch Linux.
Finally, I live in india.
So... Which one do I pick? And if u have a recommendation, I m open for that too. It shud just have good specs BUT NO DEDICATED GPU.
Custom building a Gaming Laptop was the wrong choice I made 2 years ago :P I firmly believe I should only have a laptop for projects/work/web browsing and open up my overheating gaming laptop and effectively turn it into a desktop (maximum cooling and overclocking).
So I reach out to you Devs that own laptops for work purposes. How are your Dell XPS's? I am very close to purchasing one on my next paycheck, I would run Linux (probably Ubuntu) and want a great screen and battery life (very important! I like sitting on my bed and not feeling anxious about my laptop dying thorough uni next year for finals)
You find the 13" screen enough or 15" has to be? I won't game on this machine at all most likely, if anything it will be mobile games I'm building myself or 2d indie titles.
Thanks in advance guys. Don't want to make another purchase mistake again.6
How do you guys handle wifi on laptop with i3 setup? Isnt it ugly as fuck to scan and connect to wifi multiple times via cli? I mean setting default dns per wifi, spoofing mac in public wifi etc?9
Ok, so my laptop just shut itself down out of the blue while I was working. That's nice.
Just *click* dead. Not even a BSOD or anything. The *click* being the sound of the hdd stopping.
I thought it was a linux-related issue, but this time I was on windows, so it might be a hardware issue I guess...6
So my laptop is getting pretty slow, but I don't want to use Ubuntu on it on a daily base, especially since my school uses windows for almost anything.
I'm thinking about resetting my PC and purchasing a 64gb usb stick for Ubuntu dual boot only..
Ugh why are people so tight!
I'm trying to sell a $1000 laptop for $600 and people are either not bothering to look at it or complain $600 is too much for a laptop -,-
Added that I'm willing to trade for a Mac of any sort so let's hope that adds something but fucking hell!
Gotta love not buying shit tech and trying to sell it -,-
Btw the laptop has been used for less than 2 hours -,-3
Found my grandmother's Vista laptop from '07. It has 3 problems:
1. Battery lasts 15 seconds at full charge (not a shock)
2. Plastic shell around screen is cracked (not badly, likely fixable with plastic welding)
3. IT'S SLOW AS FUCK
Point 3 is strange, considering the specs:
AMD dual-core CPU at 1600MHz (better than MY laptop...)
Some NVidia onboard GPU thing (no clue)
2x 512MB DDR2-L (immediately swapped out with 1x2GB and 1x1GB, the most we have at the house)
What I noticed, though, is that it's got a SOCKETED CPU (a rarity only like 3 years later), specifically an S1 socket. There's an AMD Phenom quad-core clocked at 1800MHz with that socket, for $16 on eBay no less!
However, it's a different processor family, so I don't know if it'd work in the board...
Anyone think it'd work?9
I was planning to buy a new laptop.. any suggestion...
i7 7th gen
OS anything other than windows.
good to have:
Great. So my laptop just died and it's time to send it to RMA. That's not a big deal. except I forgot to push few commits and now there's no way of doing it. Just great3
TLP is awesome.
My laptop battery life is improved incredibly, from 2h30m to 4h40m!
(Laptop is an Asuspro p2520la and I'm using Mint 18.3)2
So I bought this HP laptop about a year ago thinking HP was actually reliable. But oh boy was I wrong. The fucking screen cracked within the first 2 months, because of a small drop from a table, even while it was in my backpack. And the plastic casing is flimsy. It's only been a year, and it's already slowing down because of, what I'm almost positive is age. I've been careful not to do or download anything that might give it a virus. And this thing is supposed to last me another 2 years till college. And, it's fan is the most annoying thing ever. It'll run even if I'm not doing anything super demanding like browsing the internet with only a couple tabs. I'm not one of those people who usually have a ton of tabs open. What's worse is that it's the only machine I have to code with. The school chromebooks are complete shit, and I avoid them at all costs, my cs class has PC's to use but I can only use them during school hours.9
hi everyone just want your input planing to get a cheap laptop for development
Option1: Lenovo IdeaPad 330
Specs: Intel Core i3-7020U / 4GB DDR4 / 1TB HDD
Option2: Lenovo IdeaPad 330
Specs: AMD Ryzen 3 2200U / 4GB DDR4 / 256 SSD
Option3: ASUS X407UA
Specs: Intel Core i3-7020U / 4GB DDR4 / 1TB
im going cheapest as possible but it you guys think going to i5 would benefit more let me know19
Two weeks of camping ends tomorrow. Started missing coding after a week but no laptop carried with. Mind spends time thinking about projects to start.
RIP my fucking dog laptop. And FUCK Asus. The solution to fixing the fucking laptop is to get a new MB and display. But the motherboard is so God same expensive because you obviously have to solder every fucking component on it so that it's much more of a PITA.
PS yes I'm fucking angry but I hope y'all having a nice day.5
That feeling when your new laptop is arriving today but you're not getting home until late to set up the software you need...
fellow ranters, i need your advice!
i'm searching for an ultra portable laptop:
- 11" screen
- full HD resolution
it will run Linux (Kali or other debian based distro) and i need that just to do some work while i'm on the go. I don't need huge performance, so the budget is quite limited (~300 EUR / 350 USD).
is the Thinkpad x220/x230 still the best choice (even if the screen resolution is not full HD)? any other suggestion?
Hey devRanters! I need some help looking for a powerful laptop around (or obviously less than) $1000. Cousin recently stepped on my old reliable laptop and figured it was time for an upgrade. Any suggestions / experiences with your own laptops?11
Recommend me a lightweight operating system for about 6 years old laptop with Intel Atom. 'nuff said I guess...22
I was wondering...
What do you guys think of different work places e.g not working at your desk but instead working outside with a laptop?
I think you would lose alot if productivity because your screensize is limited and so on while coding. But if you're just writing/replying to Emails i think it could be fun.4
Somebody here crazy enough to leave the laptop unlocked in the computer engineering university for a minute?3
sadly my old laptop is dying (first was the hdd, then came the battery; today the keyboard just shut down, and the trackpad followed shortly). The warranty is expired, so I was thinking about a new notebook. I was looking around but I didn't find pretty much anything interesting.
So, I'm asking you for some advice on the matter, considering the following factors:
- I currently live in Italy and I'd like to keep the Italian keyboard layout, as well as the power socket;
- I usually buy everything on Amazon (Italy), but I don't mind any other online shop (in Italy), as long as they are trustworthy.
That being said, these are some of the specs I had in mind:
- screen size between 13" and 15.6", FullHD (or better), matte over glossy. I don't care about touchscreen;
- Intel i7 Kaby Lake (7th gen) or Kaby Lake Refresh (8th gen) CPU. Not the U series or any other undervolted revision;
- 16GB of DDR4 RAM (2400MHz or better);
- SSD as main storage (at least 128GB) and secondary HDD/SSD slot;
- I don't care about the GPU (right now I don't have to play :_( );
- the whole laptop (core + battery + etc.) should weight less than 2.3kg or ~5 pounds;
- it has at least one USB 3.0 TypeA port, and an ethernet port (and of course WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.);
- a price of €1200 or less (I can probably spend a little bit more for something I'm truly enthusiast of).
Thanks in advance for your time.7
I'm on the hunt for a secondary laptop. Gonna try this Linux Arch and use that laptop for development. Anyone got any suggestion on a relatively inexpensive laptop that would fit that criteria?4
Hey, fellow devranters!
I'd like to know what is your laptop-os choose. I am looking for new laptop now and quite tempted by Mac but a lot of people say it is overpriced. Another option for me is putting new ssd to my old laptop and upgrading its ram. I am a little bit confused :/12
I definitely need some stickers to hide scratches on my laptop! who else has a used and abused laptop?2
I need a new laptop at work. Money isn't really a problem but it should at least meet the following specs:
14" 1080 bright ips screen
Small form factor, this is very important
Good keyboard and Touchpad. I really hate Apple style keyboards, they hurt my fingers.
Quad core coffee lake, i5 should be fine
>=7 hours of battery life.
Be able to run Linux without any major issues
12-16 GB RAM, preferably upgradable but I think that is impossible these days.
>=256GB ssd, upgradable.
Graphics card is unimportant.
Quiet operation for easy tasks such as coding or web browsing.
I/O is not that important as long as it has hdmi and USB B and C.
Bonus : Small power adapter
It feels like I have looked everywhere for such a machine but I can't find any that is good. There is always compromises.3
Do you consider a nice laptop an investment? (I'm planning to buy one and pay it with credit for 15 months)9
Would you suggest MacBook Air Core i5 8th gen model for a hardcore Android Developer?
Current usage on regular basis -
- Android Studio
- 2 Android VM (MeMu, Genymotion etc)
- node.js MongoDB, Redis for server
- VS Code, Chrome, Mongodb compass
My old dell worked pretty well so far it has a core i3 with 8 gigs of RAM and 256GB SSD but processing always seemed slow but managed some how.
Suggest me if MacBook would make better choice than other windows laptop which are much more high end than MacBook on same price?13
I'm looking into buying a new laptop. I want something speak and ultrabookish, but dedicated graphics are a must.
Will be mostly for work, so a good CPU and RAM are important, but probably will do some gaming. Battery life and cooling are pretty big too. I've looked at the Aero 15X, the XPS 15, Razer Blade, etc. I just can't decide. Need to get it this year for the the tax deductions for my contracting income. Any thoughts? What's the best one out there?17
My one year hp laptop not charging to full.Needs calibration of battery.:(
Gotta calibrate it.
Anyone else faced the same issue?2
What specifications should I look for when looking for a laptop I want to program with? I prefer Windows OS and I'm training to be a web developer.3
Any suggestions for a good beginner linux distro? Ive been looking at Elementary and Ubuntu, but im needing something that can still use the laptop touchscreen.
Just got a new work laptop which is absolutely awesome. Only bad thing is that i can't transfer the sticker swag :/4
I want to buy a new laptop and would like to double boot it with Linux and Windows 10. So should I buy a laptop with bundled Windows 10 OS or the other way round. Also will it be a problem if I buy a laptop with DOS OS ( DOS OS Supported)3
I was on an 8h bus ride yesterday, and thought "Hey, I take my Laptop with me, then I can do some tech." Normally I have my Laptop on a docking station, and use a nice big keyboard. End of the story; thinking of using the small Laptop keyboard demotivated me so much, that I didn't do anything but sleeping on the bus. Am I the only one who doesn't like small Laptops?2
When someone is using your laptop and you want it back and go home, but he won't give it back to you!! >.<2
I'm developing on PC and when I'll get a sticker, I will buy laptop only to paste sticker on its back.
PC users strugles :(4
Looking for a new laptop where I can boot Linux. Any recommendations? Has to be light, a good battery and be my primary.10
I’m shopping around for a new laptop and would like some recommendations.
Looking at Lenovo ThinkPad or Dell Latitude, Intel i5 2nd gen 2GHz - 3GHz, 200GB - 500GB ssd
Budget is a concern, I’m not trying to spend over $400.
So I'm getting a new job in a legal software company and I wanted to ask your opinion on computers. I know many are very biased towards OSX and windows and prefer linux but I'm trying my luck lmao.
I'm currently on a late 2012 macbook pro and its starting to fizzle out on me.
Not a bit fan of the new macbooks because of dongles and no direct HDMI. I was wondering if the surface laptop 2 was any good compared? All the reviews online are basically paid to praise it and the reviews on reddit are polarized. I prefer laptops that are thin and in aluminum.12
I'd love to get stickers, but first I need laptop instead of PC :D any ideas for good cheap laptop for web dev? :)8
laptop suggestions please:
- 13-14 inch screen
- min 8 gb ram (preferably 16)
- 128 gb storage
- i5 or i7
- 1200 x 800 resolution
- can run linux (no driver issues)
- can run flutter, android studio, and emulator
- $500 or less6
My stock hp 2000-369wm notebook laptop with 4GBmem won't boot (from USB) ReactOS, RemixOS, or Android-x866
Would you get a new laptop with Intel Celeron N3450, or slightly older with Intel Core i5 4310U? I'm talking both having 256 GB SSD, 8GB RAM and only iGPU? Both for pretty much same price.9
I want to buy a laptop. I got a suggestion like ssd laptops are very fast. But I got confused wether to go for Mac 128ssd or windows 256ssd.
The reason for above comparison is both price are more or less same.
Give me your suggestion please9
I currently have a piece of shit Acer. It made a bunch of weird beeps at me last night and the screen had a seizure. What brand of should I look at for a new laptop?
My last computer was a MacBook Pro that I loved. I didn’t have any problems with it until my cat spilled Pepsi on it. I’ve used Dells and Lenovo’s at work - they both got the job done.
Should I go back to Apple because I liked their laptop more than any other I’ve used or should I go for a Windows laptop that is priced reasonably? Should I try to build my own laptop?9
I'm in the lookout for a new laptop for my dev work and occasional gaming (Dota 2 only), needs to have at least 16GB, 256 SSD, decent battery life and portable.
Which laptop do own?
Which do you recommend?8
Finally put my desktop back together after about 2 years of keeping it in storage and now I feel a bit sad because my laptop has become obsolete 😂1
So, I just got a new laptop and its a pretty sweet machine and I wanted to get coding in android studio but I can't download the SDK because my ISP has a FUP limit of 2 gigs.Fuck internet in India.1
Hey Guys i Need your help. I search for a new laptop for coding. I thought the Lenovo e570 is a good choice. What think you?1
Trying to find affordable new laptop with student's budget is like searching for a diamond crystal in dog's shit. It stinks awful lot.5
I'm looking for a good 10 inch laptop to run Linux. Standard size keyboard. I'd prefer atleast 4gb of ram and a quad core. Any recommendations?11
Been using a MBP the last 5 years. I would like to move to pure Linux laptop. Any recommendations on laptop brand?
Back in the day it was always such a PITA getting Linux to run on a laptop due to non existent drivers for sound and wifi. Has any laptop manufacturer filled this gap yet?
I don't want to spend all my time getting the laptop to work, which is why I went with MBP. Reliability is my first requirement, followed closely by performance.6
Finally my laptop is back and it's keyboard problem, thanks for official repair stop. Other two unofficial repair stops told me it's main board problem, FUXK THEM.
So yeah Microsoft, all your new windows 10 updates look great in theory, but I would rather you not burning my goddamn laptop!!! now the fan is crazy !!
My classmate forgot to lock his laptop when he went out to eat lunch. Needless to say, may other classmates raided his search history and came home with the spoils of war.... a good laugh about 'girl pool slide hurt' I dunno what's happening now
As usual, the million-dollar question: whats the best laptop to buy for developers, in the price range up to $1,500?
I'm between a 2015 Macbook Pro, the new Dell Latitude or the Thinkpad T460 😕11
Any recommendation (super) thin laptop under $1000?
I think of lenovo yoga, but I don't need the touch screen, and I think it's just upping the price.17
Anyone know where I can get cool but not too expensive stickers from? Want to decorate my laptop and stuff 😁3
Currently on the market for a new laptop for work.
I'm thinking of Asus Vivobook 15 with 12GB ram and 256 GB SSD config. I don't trust Windows and it's performance on HDD. Since I'm coming from Macbook, I would really hate having to wait about 5 mins for system to be usable after boot up.
Slightly tempted to spend more money and go for a gaming laptop for that I can play Spintires sometimes. But not sure if it's a good idea to have a gaming config laptop for work.
It fucking sucks that there is not much selection of laptops or even let you try demo of laptops that are put for display in the shops here.3
So one of my rants got ++ more than 30, I was wondering like how long does it take to get those laptop stickers ? Bcz I have seen rants saying either they haven't received it or got after a year or so..
I would love to hear your thoughts about it ..5
So I'm planning to buy a new laptop but I have no idea what's the best option for my budget 800-1000€. (would prefer something in the middle)
It'll be used mainly for development and I'm planning to transport it a lot so I expect something with good battery life.
I want to buy a new laptop please suggest me the best one under 75k INR.
Do Ghz clockspeed in laptop really matters for developing purposes?20
People of devRant, I need your help! I am finally buying a new laptop - ive been using a Dell N4140 for the past 4 years and I absolutely love it. But it's about time to retire the machine and upgrade.
I'm a programmer, I don't play games and haven't used windows in the last 2 years. Im looking for a 4-8GB RAM under $1000K. I plan to replace the HDD with an SSD. 13' is too small a screen and i feel 15.6' is slightly on the large side. I have a 21' external monitor anyway. My old dell was 14' and i loved it. And looks really matter for me. Alsooo, I dislike having a number pad. Its useless for me.
I know I'm picky. I can't afford a MacBook right now (about to graduate from university), but if you could help me in finding the right laptop, I'd be really grateful!14
So, an employee at work told me that her daughter's laptop is acting strange and I said I would diagnose it for her. I was suppose to do it today but, her daughter left it at school, so I am going to work on it Saturday.
I was wondering, how much should I charge her if I wanted to get payed?1
//not a rant
In Semptember I will be attending information technology at university, and I was wondering what kind of laptop should I buy:
optimal screen size? (13.3 or 15.6)
ram? (for VMs)
dedicated graphics? (or should I just stick to integrated)
I will be mainly coding, running VMs and school stuff(maybe some casual game like League or Minrcraft), so I was wondering if you guys could help me out with the decision19
I got an old laptop from my girlfriend that I can use for whatever I want.
As a programmer and computer nerd you can't deny that you wouldn't do anything with it, but what to do?
I want to use it for something, but can't figure out what. Maybe you have some ideas :D7
Finally.. I have decided to change my laptop. Please suggest me something good. Mainly worked with PHP and Java (Netbeans). Planning to start android.
Budget 1000-1200 USD4
I have a laptop with 8gb ram, 1Tb HDD, i5 7th gen running windows 10 and Ubuntu. Right now I'm using windows 10 as my primary OS, I'm simply addicted to the gestures especially the four finger swipe to switch desktops. I have been thinking of adding an SSD to the mix and my budget only permits a 120gb M.2 or a 250gb normal ssd.
The advantage with m.2 is that I can keep my HDD and boot my OS from the ssd and maybe install my IDEs on there but with the other ssd I'm gonna have to take my HDD out and use it as an external.
I read somewhere that 250gb above SSDs are the ones worth spending money on and that the 120 and 250 doesn't justify the price or life.
So my question is, should I go for an SSD? and if I do which one to go for m.2 or the normal one?4
Don't know why but I just love laptop keyboard. Not specific to what type of keyboard, just the fact it is a keyboard on my laptop... No wonder my neck pain is getting worse everyday :(
exactly the day when holidays/vacations start, my laptop doesn't boot, nothing helps...
and only on january 8 we're back at work so i could take it to IT guys to repair it.... UGH! :(2
People are bothering me about which one of the 11 inch laptop is the most powerful. I replied Asus e200ha, but is not enough for them 😧
Hi, is anyone using Thinkpad E470?
Do you like it or it's waste of money?
Maybe sobie ideas for fancy 14' laptop?5
Hello guys, Did you know how to build a PHP development enviroment for a low spec laptop?
Well, low spec laptop I mean:
CPU: AMD E2 quad Core 1,5
I switched from w10 because it was so laggy, Im currently using Xubuntu
I tested virtual machines bit also it was so laggy too
PD: have a good day :)7
Recently, my hardy MacBook Pro 2012 gave up the ghost. So I'm in the market for getting a new laptop. Which one(s) would you guys recommend given the following use cases I have planned? Listed in order of importance:
- Getting used to Linux. Eventually I plan on replacing my desktop PC's Windows install with Linux and would like to try some flavors on the laptop.
- Software development w/ Java (Spring), Android, Rust, Go, Node
- Music making
- General web browsing, heavy YouTube use
- A little bit of story writing6
Keycaps are like teeth to a laptop, it loses them with time and you can replace them but you don't until it really becomes a hassle without them. And sometimes you can even pimp them up to show how cool you are3
I have a pair of stickers from theHundreds since 3 years ago and I'm still waiting to get a laptop someday to use them... The struggle.
Lenovo x240, x230 or T430 and why. It won't be my primary device, I do most of my work at home on my desktop, I just want a laptop to school and when I go to cofee. I'm a working with Go, Vue and Flutter1
Does anyone here have a stack of stickers waiting for when their laptop is old enough it looks better plastered with stickers
Guys what do you think of the laptop
Lenovo y700 touch model???
Or any other similar laptop that you suggest.1
You know a good place to get stickers for my laptop?
Stickers like ubuntu, kubuntu, PHP, CSS, python and so on4
I've been a windows user for my entire life (or at least since I had a computer).
Lately I've been contemplating buying a macbook.
Can someone give me advice/ pro's/ con's...
What I use my personal laptop for:
- programming (VSCode mostly)
- watching TvShows / Movies
- Playing minecraft (mc + mods will be the most heavy games played)
- Surfing the web
Why I'm thinking of buying a mac:
- mostly the battery life TBH
- compatibility with my iPhone
- (possibly for later) iPhone emulator (maybe XCode), It might be annoying to download some programs like Android studio, but trying to get a Mac OS VM with XCode on my windows is nearly impossible.4
Did someone tried to glue iron beads on their laptop instead of stickers? Playing with the idea right now and don't know how to put them on without damaging the back of the laptop.2
