Paper or e-book? Does it make a difference?

It makes difference in toilet when you run out of toilet paper.

It makes a great difference. I write in my books since I use what i call the HBP Approach(literally for harry Harry Potter's half blood prince) in which my notes carry additional techniques or methods and just keep them as reference.

I like my dev related materials in audiobook form only, like any sane person.

E-book is a huge improvement over paper.
You can search, change fonts and sizes, change format, spacing, read it on the phone, pc, tablet or e-ink reader.

You can highlight, bookmark and go back to those easily.

You can comment inline so the HBP method is doable too. @AleCx04

You can copy&paste shit to your fav editor for notes.

Ebook is the way.
Unless you want a hard copy for your visual pleasure and own more things that you will never use.
Books are great for decoration and conversation starters though.

@mundo03 i just don't agree. The books that I use for reference I have close to me. If I need something i open to the page i need and thats it. No need to move between interfaces and fuck around with a tablet for that. Literally everyone that wants to show me something on an ebook takes way too much time fidgeting around with the damn thing.

Reading novels might be better on an ebook reader. But as far as the shit I use for development I will keep to my reference books.

Oh, and my books don't run out of battery

Who the fuck takes notes in a book?
I don't know, maybe it's a culture difference but for me, scribbling to a book feels disrespectful and wasteful.

You're changing the original work, this is not what it was meant to be. If you didn't like the painting as it is then why'd you get it? It's that sort of logic I guess, but the painting analogy does start to break down here

I would never write into a paper book. In an ebook I can highlight and have notes.

The only place where paper is better than ebook: infinite battery life :)

I prefer ebook for portability reasons, but when you have to quickly scrub through the pages print is much better. Also, print is usually cheaper.

Maybe I am too into making my life easier.
It is true e-readers are not quite there yet, but there are some pretty good ones (I have a kindle, it is okish)

But I agree having a nice book and a notebook will always be faster and better to study, but it is really crappy to get back for reference.

Having a list of bookmarks and notes is something I appreciate a lot.
Using a reader on the PC or a tablet makes you appreciate the improvement over paper books for study.

Also, my reader might run out of battery after a week of use, but I don't carry 4 kilos on paper on a plane.

@irene Repeating false statements won’t make them true, this isn’t politics. Like I said, I’m sure there are exceptions, but I haven’t encountered a single print book which was cheaper electronically. You may have, but that’s not my point.

@Froot i do. It's my book, I paid MY money for it and get to do whatever I want with it. From hitting people in the face all the way to writing notes in it :P mind you, I am specifically talking about tech related books such as reference manuals.

Plus, i got some beautiful fucking handwriting. Makes them bitches look like spellbooks

Hardly, what @irene is saying is not a false statement or a stretch(and I have gone into arguments with irene before so I know how they get :P) you can literally look into any major book selling website that holds ebook format books and you will most definitely see them be more expensive on the printed side. Where have you seen the exemption? I would really like to see that! Not being an asshole or anything. I am legitimately curious

I am fucking serious. Don’t tell me that the books I had to buy in print because they were at least 10% more expensive digitally weren’t actually 10% more expensive digitally.
