Fascinating read about the inner workings of the worldwide web and gross incompetence.

Cloudflare - How Verizon and a BGP Optimizer Knocked Large Parts of the Internet today

Massive route leak impacts major parts of the internet

"It doesn't cost a provider like Verizon anything to have such limits in place. And there's no good reason, other than sloppiness or laziness, that they wouldn't have such limits in place."

Isn't BGP fun? ETH is working on a succesor to BGP for a while now and AFAIK it's already deployed between ETH, Switch and one major Swiss bank. The new protocol is called SCION (https://www.scion-architecture.net/) and aims to bring verification and trust, which BGP completly lacks (just think back to ex. the Pakistan/Youtube fuckup...) Not sure though if it would have worked in this case, as probably Verizon would be considered a Core AS under SCION.

@Wack BGP has signatures since a while now, but many ISPs don't sign their own routes and / or do not verify the other's ones.
