I hear my intern yelling at Cortana in the other room. "Cortana, open keyboard!". He repeats this 5+ times. Issue is there is no keyboard connected so he just wants to use the on screen keyboard, and thinks Cortana will open it for him. Issue is the computer isn't hooked up to the Internet, and Cortana does not do that command without the internet.

Just grab a fucking keyboard!!!

    Your intern, your problem right?

    Good luck ;)

    Please fire him. People who think speech recognition will ever work, without having context or visuals, don't belong in tech.

    @sboesch as do people who think "speech recognition only works if I shout".

    @AlmondSauce I meaaaaaan

    I've got a rather thick accent and there's some commands (like 6:10 am) that only work if I talk to my home mini like it's retarded

    Speech recognition worked pretty well without internet 20 years ago.

    Sure, you had to train your computer by reading short stories to it. But after that everything just worked.
    Well, most of the time.

    I don't think having everything I say being sent to some server to be acceptable, just to not need to train my computer any more.

    @Yamakuzure Are you kidding? Late 90's speech recognition was *horrible*. You had to train it for hours just to understand only your voice, speak to it like it was a simpleton, and still correct half the words you put in.

    @Nanos Dragon naturally speaking 😆

    @Nanos ... Your household server is a windows server?
    You have dissapointed us all.

    @Nanos hahahaha...wait, are you being serious?

    @Nanos if I where you, I would try popos 19.04, is ubuntu under the hood with some extra drivers, also pretty recent kernel version, might work.

    I thought you said "installing" like the a actual installing process.

    Still, come on... Windows server...

    @Nanos yes.

    @AlmondSauce @Nanos Sorry guys, but with "Dragon Natural Speaking" I was able to dictate most stuff and do basic commands after about 45 minutes and the default 5 stories.

    But I guess it's a language thing. High German, no particular dialect or accent. I bet it is a whole different thing with other languages, where words aren't pronounced like they are written...

    In that matter, we Germans kinda "cheat"... 😉

    @Nanos no trials? Shame on them.

    But to be honest, I didn't even know they still existed! 😬

    I thought they lost to IBM back in the 90s.

    The machine I usef it on was an Intel Pentium Pro 233MHz, 128MB RAM, 512MB hard drive, running Windows Millennium.

    My phone is more powerful by a factor of about 50, has 20 times the RAM, and 32 times the storage.

    And speech recognition needs internet and a server recording everything I say...

    1984 everybody, it was never easier to bug every home than today. Paradise for the StaSi!
