Just a thought: to getin a bar and get drunk over socializing, because I think thats what most of us miss, talking to fellow developers, having developer frns etc.
-
epse36618yIt's going to be tricky to pick a spot though. There seems to be a quite even spread username all over the world. But then again, if that's the case then any point is the centre of the community.

Love the hackathon idea, but yeah, personally I'd sooner sink time into casual local meetups. I need some human interaction...
-
yarwest27158y@epse people talked before about doing something online or one event spread over multiple locations simultaneously.
I like both ideas, and I know for a fact that there are a good number of Dutch ranters so there should be plenty of people for me to meet with :) -
yarwest27158yBut yeah if it's something that I can attend (most likely virtually) then I am super down for it
-
As it was mentioned, picking the right spot would be... funny in the beginning at least. But what about something like Ludum Dare-like devRant event? That'd be probably more friendly to all users (but, less interaction probably). :)

I think we are digressing from the question asked by @dfox here people. I am not saying actual meet ups are a bad idea, we all can use a as much human interaction with like minded people as we can get, but then again as developers we have very tight deadlines and are scattered across the globe, hence why devRant is such a fantastic idea to begin with.
Due to the diversity of the members of the devRant such meet ups, should they ever come to a fruition, should be at a central, well known location, in the major cities across the globe where the gatherings happen on regular and predefined basis so that people can plan their other commitments around them. Sort of like the TED conventions -
A hackathon has always been a place for learning new things through collaboration with the other, more experienced, peers in the same field who feel charitable with their time, energy and focus to help raise the knowledge level of the next enthusiastic generation to come. They are also a great place to find new coding teammates for future projects.
Given the huge diversity of coding talent and also the experience in case of some of the members present here, I propose the big dogs to think up a big collaborative objective which can be both fun and a learning challenge for the less talented coders amongst us. This can then be done through online collaboration through a predefined set of days, say 3 or 4.
That way we can simulate the actual physical hackathon, and get to share more than just rants with each other while accommodating for the location diversity of the developers present here. -
What about something like Hacktoberfest, where essentially it's a hackathon for a month? Would get over the various different time zones

nagarev628yDear devranters: besides the amazing ideas you've been posting, @dfox was talking about posting changes and modifications you want them to make, so they can improve devrant. Cheers!
-
xroad23808yWe could do local meetups and simultaneously do an online global one. Maybe work on tasks based on ideas and locality
-
xroad23808y@yarwest dude I'd love to meet devs from around the world and work with them. But I think meeting locals is awesome too
-
dfox428278yThanks for the great feedback everyone! We will go over everything here and try to organize some fun stuff really soon. We have some cool stuff planned in addition to whatever we do here, so stay tuned!

Are you interested in a devRant hackathon? If so, please let me know what you'd like to see us do/what you would want to get out of it. There's lots of directions we could go, but I want to get as much feedback as we can from the community to try to figure out what would be the most fun and inclusive. Thanks!
