Let me improve on that:

Pushing major rework of critical parts to master just before leaving for vacation.

I always use master for dev and have a separate prod branch unless I have restrictions set up so people can't accidentally push to prod.

Unless I don't have a master at all. Seriously, it's the least descriptive name it could have.
