> Rambler claims that Igor Sysoev developed NGINX while he was working as a system administrator for the company, hence they are the rightful owner of the project.
What the fuck? -
@Fast-Nop
Well, IF he used ANY work device to write a single line of code, they are in their rights.
If he wrote a single line of code while at work, they are in their rights too.
If he sent a text during work hours containing a reference to this project : they are in their rights too
I’m not saying it is good, but it seems to be legal. -
@NoToJavaScript At most, they'd have the right on that single line and that single message. Also, they'd have to prove it, which will be hard after 15 years.
Currently, the claim seems to be that it's theirs because he was their employee, and that alone won't wash. -
@Fast-Nop Not sure about right to a line/product, but I agree that proving it seems challenging. Specially because his job didn’t include “coding” as description
-
stop68025y@NoToJavaScript in my opinion they have no right, since it werent a product nor a byproduct from the time, where he worked, between his job and the product there is no connection. It was only happening at the same time or would they say that everytime they it they letter "e" a child died because of it?
-
Gxost3015y@NoToJavaScript Not in Russia. If Rambler didn't give him a task to write NGINX, then all rights belong to Igor Sysoev
-
Root797505yGreedy assholes being greedy assholes.
In this case they're twisting the law to get what they want.
It's nothing new. Just happens to have a big name attached this time. -
Arrests over a copyright claim?
I wouldn't be surprised if this was a Russian government tactic to take control of NGINX to attempt to have access to all future NGINX web servers by implementing purposeful exploits and the like.
Seems pretty conspiracy-like, I know, but Russia has done more dodgy things, the USA too (as shown by the not-so-recent NSA leaks that happened).
Just keep an eye out on if it goes closed-source. -
@stonestorm Let’s add Russian backdoor to NGINX ! What could possibly go wrong ?
PS : I'm originaly from Russia ;p -
@NoToJavaScript well I did specify the government :P I'm not going to assume that the people are like that.
But I'm terms of governmemts; Russia, the USA and the UK are more than stupid enough to do it and I'm English. :D

Rambler's official response to the Nginx search request:
Is it true that searches are related to a statement by Rambler Group?
We found that the exclusive right of the Rambler Internet Holding company to the NGINX web server was violated as a result of the actions of third parties. In this regard, Rambler Internet Holding has ceded the right to file claims and claims related to violation of rights to NGINX to Lynwood Investments CY Ltd, which has the necessary competencies to restore justice in the issue of ownership of rights. We do not comment on the merits of this case.
What exactly is the violation of the rights of the Rambler Group referred to in the statement?
We believe that the rights to NGINX belong to the Rambler Internet Holding company, which is part of the Rambler Group. NGINX is an official work, the development of which since the beginning of the 2000s in the framework of labor relations with Rambler was done by Igor Sysoev, therefore any use of this program without the consent of the Rambler Group is a violation of the exclusive right.
