How did you get into programming?

In high school we didn't do anything with computers except Word etc.
Until some day we had a substitute teacher who showed us how to write a simple program in basic.

And although it just printed out a sentence 10 times in a loop I found it really amazing and started learning to program a few months later.

Sometimes I wonder what went wrong with the education system, my mother had to program all the time in school and we were just learning how to rotate a picture in IrfanView.

    7. Grade (Middle school), had to pick, either programming or some arts project. we only did some visual basic. class was cut after that year. But it sparked my interest. (that was 14 years ago)

When choosing which degree to get.. I went for the one that will lead to a career with minimal interaction with people... Boy was I wrong...

I basically came across it myself. My father did some programming but, he did not teach me as he died back in 2005. I began homeschool back in 2007 and my mother said that we could learn whatever we wanted for one hour once we got our main work done.

I have a friend who I had a past with, we reconnected and we started making video games two years ago.

1995, was 10 years old. Had a couple of LOGO classes in school, then my dad gave me his old ZX81, and learn BASIC with some books... aah, memories...

I remember I had a few IT classes in Year 3 (I was about 8-9) where we learned LOGO, which was pretty fun. Telling a turtle to make a torus (not that I knew what a torus was then) was pretty fun.

After that, I really started to learn programming when I wanted to work for a company that made a Flash game I loved. (Adventure Quest was the game) After struggling with ActionScript 2 for a while (I was about 12-13), I decided I wanted to become a games programmer.

Then I took Computing, Maths and Physics in college, and went on to get a degree in Games Programming.

And now I do web development. 😝

I had a programming class in my 12th grade and that's what set me to come to computer science. I had no idea what to do after I finished highschool but midway from finishing it I decided to go to uni and study to be a game dev 😊

For mathematics in highschool we were required to use a TI-84 graphing calculator. Soon enough I found out that you could write TI-Basic (and Z80 assembly) programs on them. Thus began my interest for programming.

Well in the 7th grade some friends got into 'hacking' and of course they were just 'kiddie scriptors' and I had to 1 up them and studied C++ then branched into others, self teaching myself shell script.

When I was still a kid circa 2002 I was playing with the mouse clicking randomly then suddenly clicked View Source Code, starting from there I got curious about HTML (I know, not a programming language) up to JavaScript and studied my aunt's books (she took computer science in college and still had the books with her) 😄

Two bottles of scotch, an eighth of Indica, Super Mario World, depression, suicidal thoughts, three O'Reilly books, graph paper, a T1 line, and a F 301 ball point pen.

Basically, I recovered from depression by playing Nintendo and programming.

I always had an interest to find out how stuff work in the inside like the gears inside a watch
I see everything in life this way, I always think past appearances which is a blessing and a curse at the same time, but I'm guessing that's what guided my curiosity toward programming

I got into networking, got my Cisco cert, then realized Cisco isn't all that, in the real world, and networking is boring, so started to teach myself Programming (Java, Tera term, Ms access) to automate my job :) that let me build a circuit lookup db that landed me a better job :)

I was a bartender and found it difficult to keep track of my tips and averages wages accurately (cash is easy to spend too). I tried to find an app that could help me out but there wasn't one that met my needs. I learned how to program that app myself instead and decided programming was awesome. I've always been logic driven and obsessed with figuring out how things work and solving problems. As a result I was hooked by my first if statement
