Back in your day there were Nazis, so you know... Let's keep the past where it belongs...

I'm working in a small escape room startup.
My goal is to write a modular software and build hardware modules for surveillance, analysis and remote control of escape rooms.
I don't know how my grandfather gets that confusion, but he thinks I'm working at a disco.
When I wrote software for drones to support autonomous harvesting machines during my studies, he understood that very well... But now?

@Anaeijon sounds like an awesome job. Mine keep using the terms internet, computer and videogame interchangeably.

@Anaeijon I came across a guy who somehow confused informatics with journalism. So when I told him what I study he always said "so you'll work as a journalist, right?".

Me: that's ok, I make well over 90 grand a year, what have you been doing with your life?

    @tisaconundrum *it's something*

My grandmother has to have me explain to her every time I visit just how it is that I'm able to make money "sitting at the computer all day".

    Write thing. Well partially ...

"Haha old people are so dumb."

Seriously, wtf... Some of the most technically sophisticated people I know are "elderly". Why is this ageist shit being ++ed up?
  • 2
@fattire where did you read that in this rant or it's comments ?
  • 1
@fattire I really like my grandfather and I don't think he is dumb.
It's just... well... He doesn't appreciate what I do. And if a man, you always looked up to, doesn't appreciate your hard work and the risks you take, just because he doesn't know anything about it... it's sad.

@skonteam the last sentence in the op.

@Angu it says "--every conversation with elderly people ever". Forget the fact that 99% of the tech we use every day was made possible by these "elderly people" in the first place, many of them are still working today right up on the cutting edge. Im blown away by that YouTube video series teaching how to use the esp8266 by a pretty old guy. Golang is being created by one if the originators of the C language etc etc If there's a generational gap between op and some old people, how about trying to explain to them what you do at a level or context that they can appreciate rather than har har elderly people are lame they think I play video games all day. I'm sick and tired of old people bitching about Millennials and all the stereotypes and the reverse is true too.

@fattire dude I'm not trying to bash old people and I also really don't think they're dumb. @angu already said most things and I agree.
I just pointed out the fact, that most people oder than 60 or so have, for the most part, no interest in learning new technology. Of course I also know some old folk that's pretty good with computers and stuff, but since I come from a rather traditional region, most elderly people are not too fond of technology. And again, I'm not saying old people are dumb, that's only what you have been assuming. I also try not to generalize, because there are old people who like and dislike technology and also young people who do or do not like it.
So please, don't try to hate on people because you assumed something about them that they have never and will never say.

@birkenspanner "Every conversation with an elderly person ever" sure sounds to me like generalizing, but since you've clarified I guess I won't belabor the point then except to agree that what you and @angu say about old people applies to... well, pretty much most people.

Mine usually go something like this:
    - So you're taking computer engineering?
    - Yes, I am.
    - Oh, nice! Maybe when you get your degree you could go work on the IRS because they say all their delays are due to their systems!
    - (...)
