I need to sit my ass down and improve my math skills so I can have better chances in my PhD interviews. But the number of topics I have to cover is huge, and it's terribly discouraging. I procrastinate by listening to Children of Bodom šŸ¤£

But haven't you had an offer of some sorts about that? I remember you telling about that in another rant

@iiii I got an offer to do internship, and depending on my performance on that period, the Prof. will decide if I stay as a PhD candidate or not. I need good math skills to survive the internship, but I am also interviewing in other places. It's always better to have a choice.

@NickyBones oh, I see. Good luck

I was in similar situation 2 years ago. The professor gave me a chance to improve my background, and it totally worth it!

You listen to good music :)

@F1973 My brother actually considers them too soft. He calls them "wedding metal" :)

    @NickyBones hahahahaha what? Really?

    What does he listen to?

And this brother sister story reminded me of a documentary/movie called 'Metalhead'.

If you haven't watched it, I'd highly recommend you.

I wish I had a sibling who was into music.

@F1973 Fucked up shit like Burzum and Naked City.

@NickyBones Burzum is love. How do you find it fucked up.

    I'd recommend him Myrkur :)

@F1973 Myrkur is controversial for black metal elitists. I like her though.

I listened to CoB a lot in my teens and knew how to play many of the songs on guitar. Haven't really enjoyed it in years though. Maybe it feels like music for teens, or maybe I just listened to it so much it wore out. My music taste has widened a lot since, mostly towards softer music. Maybe I'll rediscover CoB again some time.

@NickyBones ugh.. I hate elitist. All they do is spread hate within community.

I'd rather focus on enjoying than judging what others listen.

Now there are random bits of cob songs playing in my head

@electrineer My job is done :)

NickyBones, we have spoken before and I must tell you that you are amazing and you can do it.
There is a group of us trying to improve our maths skills for the same reason as you, we are in your country and I hope you reach out.

@mxpil Thank you! Misery loves company, we can suffer together (subjected to Covid craziness).

What kind of maths do you need to study?
  • 1
@mxpil I started from the basics, because I haven't used this knowledge since 2010. I went over linear algebra and calculus 1. I'll do calculus 2 (which I mostly remember) and ODE+PDE next. After that I will look over relevant papers on computer vision, see what specific math knowledge they require and target that....

Cool, I'm doing ODE+PDE targeting CV as well, and I'll need to get pretty good with DL stuff too.
