When people (mostly girls) ask me what I study in college and immediately answer themselves with "oh it's IT or something like that, right?" a part of me just dies. They literally think I'm studying how to work at help desk or fix printers. I'm not even exaggerating, a girl once told me she actually thought that. I'm not sure if she's just dumb as fuck or if most people actually think that about computer science, hopefully it's the former...

Telling them that you code will make them wet

@theabbie oh sure, then I invite them to take a look at the sick gaming rig I have at home

@neeno Start wearing hoodie and look like a nerd to convince them.

What does it matter? Sounds you're having an ego already. There's more in the world than IT. He / she knows that

@theabbie nah forget that, I'm gonna wear those corny t-shirts with "I <3 to code" written on them. Surely that'll make them fall for me

@rooter well it really doesn't matter, but it's just that it's so much more than "IT", it's like saying "oh so you make houses" to an architect. Yes, in the end it's just a house but an architect is very different from a bricklayer.

You're right, it's ego, but ego isn't necessarily bad. Too much of it is obviously bad, but if you have too little you'll feel you're not worth anything.

This is just how girls talk to guys they ask you what you do and then slightly diss it. Doesn't mean they actually dislike that hobby or you it's just saying hello

If it really bothers you that much just tell them to go fuck themselves to their face and they'll retreat immediately

@Root All right all right you can be a civilized human being too I guess

Most people are clueless about what technologies imply in general, not just programming, sadly... even though it is a huge chunk of our society lol.

Do you take the time to explain what it is in a non technical way, or just assume everyone has the same technical knowledge as you? i find people remember when i take the time to explain it simply and in a non condescending way.

I can tell you for sure that a Lot of people think IT = CS (or even just Dev/Eng).
  • 2
since when Information Technology is a synonym to a help desk?
  • 1
@ConfusedDeputy yeah most of the time I try to explain it in very simple terms and they get it (I think they do at least), but that's not the point. The point is that most people don't know what we do and just think we fix printers, which doesn't really matter but is kinda annoying.

@iiii it's not, but people use the term IT as anything related to computers.
  • 2
It's just good to filter out the ones not worth your time asap.

It used to bother me but not anymore. Every time someone asks, I say "IT" knowing that it's a broad field (and it's just two syllables!) with different types of work. They usually ask for more details though.
