I had an idea for an open source project, but wanted to get some feedback before I committed a lot of time and energy to it. Seeing as how devRant is the only social media type app I use, I thought this would be a good place to ask.

The project would be an open source keyboard for iOS that would make it easier for devs to write code on their mobile devices. There's already a few "developer" keyboards, but they're either paid apps, or haven't been updated in a while.

Creating a custom keyboard isn't very complex, so it could be a good place for newer devs to actually contribute code and get comfortable with open source in general.

So my question is, do people use third party keyboards? Is this something people would be interested in contributing to? Should I go back to the drawing board?

I'm an Android user who frequently switches keyboards between Google KB and Hacker's KB, and I have little experience in the iOS KB app market but...
I would imagine that the only successful keyboards for iOS would be ones with 'niche' functionality, seeing as most of Apple's is so well designed in terms of UX.
This *is* very much a niche idea which I think would be very useful to many people.
However, most developers tend to be Android users because of its customisability and hackability, and there is no other way to pay Apple's frankly ridiculous fees other than to have paid apps or iAPs (in app purchases).
I am not a mobile dev, nor an expert in the iOS market so this project would not be one i could contribute to, though I quite happily would if I knew anything about it.
I think others would be willing to contribute to this though, and it could be very successful. My advice would be to start some work on it and see if it gathers any momentum or popularity and then decide whether

or not to continue development and eventually go to production. I would be interested to see how it works out though. Good luck!
