But when you copy the URL of a locked article and paste it in incognito mode which it unlocked for free.

You get to read 3 locked articles before you need to sign up. Using incognito let you browse with a fresh set of cookies 🍪

It's called a cookie paywall and is front end driven.

It's when they make it back end driven it becomes a PITA.

Instead of using incognito, I just avoid anything on medium, that way I also avoid reading a useless article

I have a browser extension that when I visit Medium.com adds a referer header to the request. This makes it look as if I was referred to the article from Twitter. This prevents activation of the cookie wall.

This is because Medium is owned by Twitter and Twitter wants anyone to be able to read the article linked in tweets
