neeno31464yIt's not just a few bucks, you're not saving just 50%. Correct me if I'm wrong but Windows server is much heavier than linux and a lot of good software for it is paid (and closed source). This adds up really quick and if you're at least a medium-sized business it might be more than a few thousand.
I'm just guessing here though, so take everything I say with a grain of salt.
EDIT: also, free software does not always win. Actually, I think it's quite the opposite with user apps like word and photoshop. -
@neeno that depends.
We have a no GUI, only kernel windows servers now. (Noone uses them, because, let's be honest, if I'm wiling to do command line, I'll take Linux).
The answer is : simplicity.
Configuring DNS server on windows is a joke. 0 knowladge needed compared to bind config files.
BUT if you JUST search for a minute, there is WEB gui for linux. I like Webmin which I love.
Looking at server rentals prices.
Windows ones are, as a rule, about 2x more expensive than linux ones.
Which made me realize the reason why it's usually the more crap tech that wins and spreads:
because usually the more crap tech is free.
We're a bunch of cheapskates willing to impose shit tech on ourselves in the name of saving a few bucks.
In other news, there's no news today.
