I just made an interview for a Devops position, for a bit of context I’m transitioning from a development background. I was asked only for specific commands and configs and literally no design questions, thing I would usually just google.
Is this normal? Because it was the most bizarre interview I’ve had.5 -
When people tells you electron is not that bad, make them download Binance app...
Worst shit ever, freezes my pc every ten minutes, is laggy as hell, it’s a pain in the ass to update. -
Just curious, if you company had 3 system outages due to architecture with over 5 days of intermittence + a bunch of smaller downtimes ONLY in 2021 would they promote the guy in charge?
Because maybe I’m the weird one and not the company itself.3 -
Logic of my company:
Why have an auto incremental ID for the table when you can have another table where you have to retrieve the last registered id, add 1 to it, then update the register of the last ID, then retrieve the id and finally create the register you intended.
Justification: “It’s a good practice”

Today I spent 25 minutes explaining to this dev that there’s no way that a http request can access directly to an ftp server and retrieve a file.
A dev with 4 years of experience...17 -
If anyone remember my suffering with the devops team of my company, it just got worse, the dude who knows shit about devops and development got suddenly promoted as leader of the devops department.
if that isn't luck then i don't know what is, and in the last two months hasn't been any improval at all of the "new" architecture.

Hello everyone, once again I’m asking for your help, for the first time I’m working as a counterpart for an external development company, this project already has a few months of work but there are not any technical documentation or quality metrics.
Would you suggest to ask all the necessary stuff with times, quality and requirements or it’s already impossible to do that?5 -
We needed to generate secret tokens for the app, me being as curious as I am, asked what encryption algorithm they were using, little did I know the the answer would be a random string generator.
Every day further from god.9 -
Hello everyone,
Hopefully you can help me with this, i feel like my math skills are really bad, even though I come from an engineering background we all know how most classes on uni goes...
So the thing is, I’ve seen brilliant(the website) as an option to start from the beginning with a good mathematic foundation.
Is brilliant worth the 10$ or there are better options?6 -
I’m currently working with a devops team in the company to migrate our old ass jboss servers architecture to kubernetes.
They’ve been working in this for about a year now, and it was supposed to be delivered a few months back, no one knew what’s going on and last week they manage to have something to see at least.
I’ve never seen anything so bad in my short life as a developer, at the point that the main devops guy can’t even understand his own documentation to add ci/cd to a project.
It goes from trigger manually pipelines in multiple branches for configuration and secrets, a million unnecessary env variables to set, to docker images lacking almost all requisites necessary to run the apps.
You can clearly see the dude goes around internet copy pasting stuff without actually understanding what going on behind as every time you ask him for the guts of the architecture he changes the topic.
And the worst of all this, as my team is their counterpart on development we’ve fighting for weeks to make them understand that is impossible the proceed with this process with over 100 apps and 50+ developers.
Long story short, last two weeks I’ve been fixing the “dev ops” guy mess in terms of processes and documentation but I think this is gonna end really bad, not to sound cocky or anything but developers level is really low, add docker and k8s in top of that and you have a recipe for disaster.
Still enjoying as I have no fault there, and dude got busted.9 -
As a following to my previous rant
https://devrant.com/rants/3180332/...
I ended up staying because because the outsourced company(where I’m hired) got called out by the company we’re providing devices for letting me leave and underpaying me
As it it was not enough they also threatened them to stop outsourcing with their company.
At the end I got a 2x salary rise, way better benefits and the promise(still to see) of getting hired directly on the company I’m working in.
So yeah, don’t underestimate your value.3 -
After working three months on this company I quit today. And with this would be 3 different jobs on the current year.
Rather be the rat who leave the ship than the drowned captain.
Only thing I can get out of this experience is don’t trust on companies that doesn’t do technical interviews.7 -
Someone asked for help to solve some errors on an angular app.
Me: sure np, send me the repo link to see what is the issue.
She: *proceeds to send me a 250mb rar*
Me: what is that? I prefer the repo so I can see the history please
She: got me there, haven’t versioned yet
Me: WHAT? You’ve been working for three weeks without versioning anything?
She: yep, because I can’t make it work so, why would I?
I really ask myself sometimes if we are in this world just to suffer.19 -
Honestly, who could have thought at some point of his life that having all the business logic on the database with 20k stored procedures was a good idea?9

In my new job the main task of the team is to refactor 16 old java apps, when I was about to shot myself they told me I was going to another department.
Still have to deal with some old ass stuff(cobol and a few old Java apps) but it’s mainly new projects.
I guess there’s still a god above us.4 -
Following my last rant, my current employer told me it wasn’t right for me to assure a job first without telling him first I was planning on leaving.
How does that even work? Am I the only one who thinks that makes no sense at all?15 -
I’ve been hired by a company as a developer while I’m still working, what you would say to you current employer if you need to start in 2 weeks?
My current job is my first one as a developer, and they’re really nice so I hope I can leave in good terms.8 -
Don’t you sometimes feel revolutionary and want to use some technology that is completely impractical for the project?
I’m using grpc on my angular app... -
Besides all the creepy stuff going around deepin, I have to say it's the first distro that made forget I was using Linux.16
