Just finished recruiting processes with 3 companies and I’m afraid that in 2 more years, you will need a masters and to have worked on the Mars rover in order to get a jr position.

To be fair, my first job fresh out of uni more than 20 years ago was taking over a code base in assembly.

Master's degree is a strict minimum already.

if you found a job without, congratz

@NoToJavaScript I came straight outta Highschool with 16 and never had a problem finding a job.

    @Fast-Nop ouch 🤕
You’re a dinosaur pal.. T-rex or something though. Not one of those plant eating pathetic little ones.

Always wanted to learn asm but every time I look at it I give up again 😅

@NoToJavaScript well I’m based in Costa Rica so the market here still looks for bachelors minimum. However for Data Science I’ve seen Master Degrees minimum

@just8littleBit Yeah, when I was at your age, Pluto was still a planet. ;-)

@Fast-Nop how old were you when kids started disrespectfully using you like a piece of playground equipment because they were too lazy to find the right offset for their shell code?
  • 3
@demoralizeddev That actually never happened because they found that I outnopped them. Nobody can do nothing faster than I can. ^^

@Fast-Nop I hear ROPing is all the rage these days. What is this scary new trend and how do I know if my teenager is doing it?
  • 2
@demoralizeddev Yeah, that's sophistication and laziness at once, and I approve of that. Why writing your own code when code that would do what you want is already there? Copy-paste does reduce the effort, but not as much as paste without copy.

As Laozi said, do nothing, and all is done. Great Chinese hacker from 2500 years ago.

@just8littleBit Get a microcontroller and do risc based assembly. Its kinda fun. You can use it to flip bits and turn on leds.
  • 1
@Fast-Nop but through doing not doing all things are still done, and using references to what was already written to in attempt execute something new in the present is surely neither a neutral reference nor non doing. Perhaps the true Taoist approach to exploiting memory corruption has yet to be discovered

@demoralizeddev 0 or 1. There is nothing or there is oneness. These are the base truths of all logic.
  • 1
@Demolishun On the other hand, if 0 is large, it is on a par with a small 1.
  • 1
    @NoToJavaScript what? No..

I just got a new grad job within the past year, no master's required.

The only requirement I'd say is internships
  • 0
Requirements for junior full stack: 20 years of full stack experience, Harvard phd in computer science and rocket surgery, read knuths art of computer programming front to back while your classmates were learning fractions, can devops like its nothing , can hack into the CIA, react? Pfft you should’ve written your own react like framework while taking a shit (which isn’t allowed to smell btw). Must be willing to work for free

@Fast-Nop still pretty new to devrant, how many of us are there here?
  • 2
@demoralizeddev There are a few greybeards here who remember a life before JS and even before WWW.
  • 1
@Fast-Nop wonderful. Actually 22 myself but got raised by graybeards on IRC
  • 1
@demoralizeddev Even knowing IRC qualifies you. ^^ Shit, I still remember downloading ircII from tarball and compiling it under HP-UX to get an IRC client, and that was purely text based.

Job offers in my area (=Belgium) usually mention "or equivalent by experience". So if you've demonstrated commitment through open-source, student jobs, or internships you're good.

@Fast-Nop My favorite website when I was a kid: feeding ants to spiders in the yard.

@just8littleBit anecdotal evidence means shit. I just got offered a junior position for a PHP senior developer and the shit they asked me about was damn straight close to an entire team. I accepted an interview on it and made fun of them concerning what they were asking. No thanks, I'll continue to push wordpress dev shit for leeeeeeeeess work that they ask and 3x times the pay.

This industry is a fucking joke.

@AleCx04 yea all I’m saying is that a degree doesn’t mean shite, you can learn it yourself in a quarter of the time.
Not saying that that’s the way but it’s certainly possible and not as hard as people make it out to be.

I have some antidotal evidence of my experience out of college. Graduated in 3.5 years in December. Got a job starting in April. Applied to 230 positions to get this job. It's fucking crazy out there.

@just8littleBit I have my own curriculum to learn the CS stuff I don't know about. Found it online. It has a list of books and everything for a generalized CS education. I also have been learning some of the math and algorithms on Kahn Academy.

Junior positions want a Bachelors in computer science now.

And get this, the role is for IT support.
  • 2
Remember back when finishing HS was a big deal? Yea me neither
