Give him a sticker that says “good job! You deserved it”! with a cartoon bunny giving a thumbs up like what they give to kindergarteners next time you have to review his code
-
asgs112754yDid you ask why?
This may be a temporary assignment. Otherwise, it is a fucking insult -
Why do you prefer sticking to your current job? Do you think you’ll have a hard time finding a new one? It sounds like torture where you are now…
-
Root797764y@asgs The official reason was that I took over for the previous person (who was burned out) and they hired someone to fill the role, so he’s transitioning into it.
However, I’m taking over most of his AppSec duties (fixing security flaws, implementing new security features) instead, sooo… -
Well I think she said she used to send them huge lists of security bugs that they denied and now that she’s out I hope the place doesn’t get hacked by some 16 year old kid in Singapore

A few reasons:
1) Because they leave me alone, mostly.
2) Very good pay, very flexible hours, decent boss.
3) They’re used to my low productivity (from debilitating depression) so if I can break out of it, the job will be pretty cushy.
Also, i’m so depressed that i literally do not have the energy to look, let alone interview for other jobs — jobs which would require much more effort than my current.
I also miss my previous bosses (and job). But as fortune would have it, they left their last business (sold, still managed, later left) so they’re planning another business to start. If I’m lucky I’ll get to work for them again. If they offered me a job, I would drop everything and join them. That might happen in 6-24 months, so i might as well stay here.
Also, with how our financials are going, i might not need to work again after a couple of years.
So staying here has several benefits and isn’t as awful as it sounds. (Though the politics definitely aren’t good) -
@Root so would you be happier if you worked for your last boss? Mental health is important…
-
Root797764y@OmerFlame I would be many, many times happier if I worked for him again.
He’s absolutely my favorite boss ever, and probably my favorite coworker. too. He’s super friendly, cool as hell, has random crazy skills, is a shrewd businessman, understands devs (because he is one), offers great insight into how to build/architect things, and is very understanding.
The only way I could like him more is if he was a chick 😉 and didn’t love the freaking desert so much. (and if he was a libertarian ~) -
Root797764yBy contrast, i would call my current boss… happy-go-lucky and naïve. He’s also friendly, but in a very distant way; it feels both genuine and fake at the same time. He’s also a dev, and a decent one, though he totally stinks at architecture.
He’s not so much understanding as he pretends to be and just kind of goes along with things. Depressed? He thinks that sucks but totally doesn’t understand because he’s never been depressed and can’t imagine it. But he’s heard of it so it’s a thing and he just needs you to keep working but at your own pace okay?
So as a boss, he’s definitely one of the better ones. I’ve had a lot of shit bosses, so this places him in second place, but it’s a very distant second.
If #1 was here on earth, #2 would be on the moon. #3 would be on Jupiter. (And that asshole boss from Hell? He would be off in deep space [or Sgr A*] where he fucking belongs.) -
Glad your boss isn’t the heartless reptile I thought he was. I thought he was totally ignoring your complaints about depression, being like “oh ok mm hmm yes uh that’s too bad. OH! I almost forgot! Yeah um we need a status update on that screwdriver you’ve been working on by Friday. Do you think you could, well, have one ready for us by then?” Then again your lead sounds like a stuck up asshole with a king size ego who probably didn’t give you a reason for cutting you bc he didn’t have a lie ready for you yet. “Arrghhh can’t have this damn woman telling a man how to write his code arrrghh primitive instincts kicking in arrrghh me angry, me not want root”

Adventures in security land, part II:
I’m getting pulled off the security review team and instead relegated to part-time security tickets alongside my usual dev work. (So, someone else finds them, i fix them.)
Guess I found and debated too many problems with the lead dev’s code. 🙄
