Today was a painful day when I realized that I need to backup my nginx configs like I backup my actual data. 20 minutes of downtime turned into an afternoon when I accidentally deleted the nginx config backups on my server. It's been... let's say fun.

And why wasn't your nginx config maintained by configuration management?

@jckimble it had never even occurred to me. This is my side project, and most of the wizardry was in the main flask/wsgi stuff. All my configs and systemctl scripts for that was backed up, versioned, and managed. But I had been trying out alot of different solutions for deploying that, and it never really occurred to me to include my 20 line nginx configuration in those extensive backups. I'm now managing those with everything else.

@Eariel XD. It was the stupidest thing too. I just named my backup something stupid, and then when I needed to purge some old configuration files, it matched their naming pattern.
