@STRINIX but what if your ISP blocked a certain domain? It might be useful to check if the website is down, or if it's something else.

An alternative that I always use is http://isup.me/Isitdownrightnow.com. the URL is short and easy to remember. :-)

@Rocket3G really its just about narrowing down what the problem could be. You can ping other websites and different ports and if everything works accordingly except the website then it's either down or you can't reach it. You can then check if there's anything blocking you or you can just assume it's down and try again later.
The point of this is you're not dependant on any third party websites.
