Each day, I read the vast swath of ticket hell hole that is our JIRA.

I read tickets that are written by people with not just 0, but an undefined understanding of technology...

I read tickets that are technically impossible due to this 0 understanding...

And finally, I laugh in bitterness seeing the time estimates stack up to months and months worth of work for which the managers expect to be done in 2-3 weeks πŸ˜‚

The moment a manager can expect something to be done in a set amount of time your responsibilities are fucked. Managers decide what needs to be done and devs decide how long that'll take. I know it sounds idealistic, but I worked in such a team before and it worked flawlessly. My manager was clueless about technology, she wrote tickets in UX terms and the devs provided feedback including estimates and minor modifications that would improve the estimates.

The trick is that managers need communication skills, they need to be able to say "I don't know, I'll ask the experts and get back to you later" to a client.

"It's just a simple banking system. How long can it take? Two months?"
