If it was the only drive containing the data, it wasn't a backup by definition.
Try a professional data recovery service. The platter might still be readable somehow. -
@Oktokolo Well, it was a backup until the primary drive on the PC it was also on also failed. Now I just put everything in the cloud and download a local copy. I figure Google has WAY more redundancy and disaster recovery than I do.

@stackodev And Google has the killer feature when it comes to backups: A redundancy > 1.

@hjk101 More like I forgot and/or hoped for the best while raising 5 children and being a caregiver for my mom. It happens.
-
@catgirldev Yup. When I sent it to the manufacturer they said even professional data recovery couldn’t help me. At best I’d get fragments. It was that bad.

Rozanne13ySo incredibly sorry to hear that, may her soul rest in peace. You will always carry the love and memories that you shared with her in your heart.

avneesh4403yOnce I had a friend who was close to me. My friend always said that always create memories in your mind and replay that whenever needed... Just close your eyes and you are in that moment. No need of fancy electronics and fancy storage and fancy camera. I am sure your mind the permanent hard drive of all the memories... You are good to go man till you have Alzheimer's.

My mom got cancer and passed away two years later. I had made several videos to document her life. All of that, plus photos and video of our family, lived on a backup drive that got dropped on the floor a few months after she passed away. Head crash that wasn’t discovered until it was turned on again and forever destroyed the platter. It was the largest set of photos and video I had of her. All forever gone.
