How do you guys plan for meeting the deadlines?

Been self employed fir over 12 years. I realised before that, most deadlines are arbitrary. Usually as a result of some spineless sales or project manager with no idea of what jobs are currently in progress and how long things take. They agree without consultation, to deadlines based on the MD client is going on a 2 week golfing holiday. Very few are real binding contractual deadlines. Working for myself I negotiate a reasonable deadline based on the work i have, but being able to speak to the client regularly you are able to better manage deadlines with them on board. Having to work ridiculous hours is down to (in most cases) SHIT SPINELESS MANAGEMENT.
