@adamjkeith I agree with @rEaL-jAsE tho. I switched from Chrome as my main work browser to Edge some months ago, and even an insensitive monster would notice the difference in CPU and memory usage. Chrome is so bloated it blows my mind.

After all the replies, I’ve decided to move to edge. I’ve never had such a low cpu usage while having multiple web browser tabs open and word open. Didn’t realise chrome used soo much. Wonder why it uses so much 🤔

@adamjkeith all the tracking of what sites you have open and for how long, and watching and processing your face activity via webcam and listening on the microphone and sending all of it to google takes a lot of cpu ;)

@Midnight-shcode I realised I had Apache servers running as well because I was doing a bit of SQL earlier. This 2% is with the servers off. I know the memory is still quite high but this PC doesn’t have much memory anyway.
I think it’s amazing to have 2% CPU usage with file explorer, 2 tabs open on edge, edge sidebar, Microsoft Word, windows defender, deskpins, Bluetooth, task manager and a mouse remapper (to remap side buttons on mouse) all running. I never realised Chrome was the cause for high CPU

I have a theory that all standardization is bound to eventually fail under capitalism because once a provider can cover enough features (in the case of social platforms the people you can reach are the features) it is no longer motivated to enable or even acknowledge alternatives.

This is why instant messengers drop support for XMPP after a while, and this is why Windows no longer treats executables signed by well known parties as safe, even though being a web company Google probably has stricter security guarantees than MS so that EXE is probably safer than some privileged processes (if you don't count Google's spying as a vulnerability since you're pretty much opting into that by willingly running the program).

@lbfalvy and thats one reason why I keep using firefox to keep the options alive.

Edge is the same engine as chrome under the gui.

@Voxera Firefox hasn’t been much better regarding resource usage. At one point it was worse than Chrome. Maybe that’s improved since, but I haven’t really needed to look back since switching to Edge.

@100110111 they have improved, but for me its more out of principle that there should be more options.

Firefox broke IE’s monopoly and paved the way for chrome to be born, I do not want to se a single engine becoming as dominant again.

Google have done multiple attempt to implement their own tech that would lock things into their browser and that would be bad.

Since MS is using the same engine I do not trust them to be completely separated.

@Voxera I see your point. For me though, the choice of which browser to use for work is entirely that of convenience. Edge offers the least resistance, so that one trumps the options in that context. For personal use I opt for Vivaldi. There are a few other options I have yet to evaluate, but so far I’m liking it the most.

@100110111 well I started using Firefox when it was still names phoenix and had s version number of 0.1 ;). So ff is my convenience choice.

And before that I used the Mozilla suit starting at version M16 :P

@Voxera I started with Netscape, then went to FF (never been using IE), but I quit FF somewhere in the 50 versions because they axed the add-ons (extensions are not the same level) and had too many idle GUI devs so that shit looked always different.

They also thought that they could afford ignoring their user base and behaving like arrogant assholes because they had a large market share. That's why I changed for Vivaldi and havn't looked back since.

So exactly my story, except I doggedly kept using FF at work until I just couldn’t bear that bs anymore and started looking for something less annoying.

This one doesn't come from Microsoft, it's the RAM begging you to stop!

I don't get why people call Firefox slow, it's been the fastest reasonably compliant browser on my machines ever since Opera went to shit, and it's been disproportionately faster than Chrome for about 4 years now

@adamjkeith Hmm, I have the same (around 5%) with chrome open and 18 tabs.

@Voxera uses the open source engine, which has less spyware ;)

@Grumm My firefox thst has been running since about 9 hours ago with no restart and 16 tabs uses between 0.2% and 3% cpu and about 1Gbyte of memory in total
