I had to ask a recommendation letter from my professor few years ago after not seeing him for 10 years.

I was also confused what to give him as gratitude because:

1. he obviously had more money,

2. I didn't want other people to see me with him as having inappropriate relationship

3. getting it mistaken as bribery

I ended up just buying him two large bags of snacks . He might share them with his colleagues on his lab.
