When you have to figure out whether it's better to transfer 85GB of data via internet or to load it onto a harddrive and drive it 600 km/ 370 miles in your car.

    Road transport has impressive bandwidth

    @mhudson it does and it's fun af.

    Nothing beats a good drive 😊

    I vote drive

    Roadtrip!

    I know this may sound funny, but: Amazon is doing this.

    I did the math. :-) Assuming it will take 10 hours to drive the 600 km, the road trip will be faster if you have bandwidth less than around 19 Mbps.

    @mhudson the only downside is the latency is really bad

    At the end what did you choose?

    Thanks for doing the math. I went for the driving option. It is more expensive but way more fun. Also, in Germany our data transfer speed is unlimited

    @stormwise 600 km is 6h rather than 10h

    @3ndriu 4h, I live in Germany

    @jobylie I included pauses. Not every car is suitable for making 600km in one go 😉
  • 2
    @3ndriu probably every modern car is, but not every driver. Stil, I made it in a litle under 5h and therefore had an amazing data transfer speed

    @jobylie @3ndriu Of course, it depends on the infrastructure at hand. I assumed 60 km/h average speed through both urban environment and freeways. In this case, if the trip took only five hours, I understand there was autobahn most of the way. :-)

    I think you guys left writing 85gb to a hard disk out of the equation.

    @logic already had it on an hdd. Just reading it was an issue, but we had lunch while it was loading so no problem.

    @demiko well, it was limited by the top speed of my car or rather by my driving skills. But we don't have speed limits on our highways (Autobahn) in Germany. So you can transfer big files at 200km/h or 120mph without any problem.
