Give me a job?
I'm in all ways unqualified, but I don't like working as pizza delivery guy -
kurtr126507y@Agent-P I'm looking for a good all rounder (full stack).
Mainly comprising of PHP,JavaScript, elastic search, mysql & nodeJS
But I he/she also needs to have a good knowledge / understanding of common tools (git, npm, webpack etc), JS frameworks (React, electron, polymer), application architecture & design patterns, managing web servers, HTTP (Restful services),SOAP, front end design and browser web API's.
People like this are tough to find -
@kurtr good luck bro, finding the right guy for your team is a tough thing to do, having the wrong person will make a mess :-/
-
Fradow9087yMay I suggest going to meetups relative to your stack?
Also, reverse the question: where would you look for work if you were looking for a change (NOT if you were unemployed and desesperate)? Target those places. -
Wishing that I lived in Johannesburg. Sitting about 130km away and it blows.
I'm sure that you will find someone.
Oddly enough, put on the add that there will be a test. It will weed out the candidates that are trying to take a chance.
There was a guy here who came in and said that he was a master at Citrix and SQL. It turned out that he was a master of procrastinating and googling.
Good luck -
vouger67yHahahaha, I've had one CV saying he's a programmer. So I asked him, "in what language do you program". In his response : "I know HTML"
-
@kurtr I know two devs in South Africa, don't know their skills, but average+ I reckon
Want me to hook you up with them? -
@kurtr I'm available at freenode with the username ChainsawBaby
Or you could email me at devrant@ (domain found on my userprofile) -
I facking hate recruiters as well, but then from their other side (they're trying to get me employed).
I only joined them out of laziness: I didn't want to look for a job myself, but boy oh boy, am I sorry!
They'll try to make money off of you one way or the other, and the positions they offer are in no way related to the preferences I sternly indicated many times. Fackers.
This form of middleman must be extinguished!! Approaching personally from either side is the way to go. -
seeba9247yGo on freelancer.com post a contest, with some money and a chance to work with you as a prize.
Buy me a pizza later -
Happens to me every week. My asshole HR sends me a profile for. Web Dev, tells me he/she is a very strong candidate. Come the interview:
Me: What Web/App Servers do you use?
Candidate1: Ubuntu
C2: We use A Pack (meant to say Apache)
C3: We use .htaccess files to configure Web Access!!
If only i had a gun!! 👨🎓👩🎓 -
false837yYou are not alone, right now I have to deal with someone that claimed he worked on everything from frontend to backend. Reality: 60% of work day he is struggling with git.
So my advice for filtering process, ask them if they know basic git. Because it looks like some people just don’t get it even after 1 week of using it. -
@psfr937 Ubuntu is not a Web Server!! An htaccess file is not a web server, i didnt ask details, just the name!! :)
"A Pack" was just painfully funny!! ;) -
I have an awsome gig ATM but living in Joberg sounds like a hoot :) + I know what an array is
-
@TomBomBadill If three guys claims they have deep understanding in fast food.
ask: what do you eat for lunch?
A) McDonald
(But McDonald is a company not food)
B) Sun da (means Sundae)
C) the chocolate is so sweet so it is mixed with ice cream xD
We sometimes answer like that in daily life during casual chat and treat semantics flexibly
This doesn't mean they do not understand fast food but they may not expect you take semantics purely strict and logical :p -
@psfr937 Oh so thats the comparison you want to do!! :P
Sorry bro, cant jot down the interview transcript here!! And if you still think Ubuntu was the correct answer to the question, i dont have anything else to say!! -
anth128127yI went on a training course a few years ago and the person doing said training mentioned they use a REST API for all job applications. Not going to be technically challenging but it's a nest idea.
-
AHython7397y@kurtr I personally use hackerrank to test all candidates before interviewing them and giving them practical programming tests, so I have an idea of the actual knowledge before going any further
-
Double-A4347y@kurtr People like that are hard to find because you are describing the job of at least 3 different people. Why not also add testing and requirements engineering to the list? /s
-
yusijs12507y@Double-A it's not really that big of a list tbh, most of it is fairly basic. I can check off that list, except elastic search (never touched) and design ( I'm utter shit at design). Unless @kurtr expects 100% solid knowledge in all fields, in which case I hope he's paying rly well. :P

I'm hiring and I'm fucking done with recruiters buttering up skills etc and sending me BS candidates.
Interview earlier today...
CV: MySql skill level 10 (out of 10)
Reality: Can't write a simple JOIN!
Yesterday...
CV: PHP 6+ years exp, self proclaimed ninja/jedi/oracle.
Reality:
[Me]: Write me a function to map an array to x.
[Ninja]: What's an array?
I've come to the conclusion that the type of dev I want on my team is highly unlikely to be looking for work much less using some piece of shit shady agent to find work so I need to hunt him / her down personally and can use the phenomenally large recruiters fee as a hiring bonus / incentive.
Only problem now is finding quality full stack devs in the area (Johannesburg, South Africa).
I'm thinking of posting a 'challenge' job add to filter out good candidates - some kind of code challenge to be solved that gives them my contact info. Any one have any creative ideas I could try?
