MATLAB sucks so bad. Why my university professors keep forcing us using that crap instead of Python?!

because it's still widely used in business 😐

I have not seen MATLAB in used technologies by people... It's a paid proprietary software. Python is free, open, with a large support and documentation and modules for everything. And the most important thing: it does not start it's indexing from 1. I think it would be better to teach Python, since is widely more used :/

    No love for Wolfram Mathematica?

I've used Wolfram Alpha only to check my math solutions when I was in highschool orand on the first year of University when I studied Mathematical Analysis lol
  • 2
    Why Python 2 though?
  • 3
Uhm, because it's more used than 3, and I use it lol

I find Matlab quite usefull to solve mathematical problems. :)

I had this exact same problem during my studies. Glad I'm rid of that shit.

    Numpy rules!

I had to install Matlab on my friend's computer for her research... She loaded it and immediately went "what is this"

They teach Matlab because they know it better. Also, it can be better suited for visual problems than python, IMHO.

My computational methods courses used both.

What do you mean with visual problems?

Mat lab is useful, particularly for non-CS students. You can ask for help on matlab without getting lost in an argument about whether or not a solution is 'idiomatic' or 'matlab-esque '

With Matlab its so easy to plot graphs and other stuff, also there are so many functions to solve numerical problems in the library.
  • 3
Same with numpy, matplotlib and sympy. Numpy and matplotlib have almost the same function signatures as MATLAB :/

The only good reason is the one proposed by @starless : they know MATLAB better.. :/
  • 2
@magicleon problems dealing with tessalations for example, or graphics with repeating radial symmetry.
  • 1
@starless well, I've never encountered that type of problems...
  • 3
In class, we use scilab, wich is totally free, instead of matlab.
  • 2
@magicleon it's time to move on.

Yep it definitely is. Today I have the final part of the exam for the last subject that involves MATLAB. And I will say goodbye to it forever I hope.
