Ever been at a company that makes you feel worthless and useless? To add to that, have a director who has physically assaulted you? Company refuses to train, but demands that certain set of skills. Won't give a raise but has literally millions in funds for advertising. Yeah. Fuck that.

    Yes. I was the CTO in such a company. CEO treated employees like shit, despite my best efforts. Best I could do is leave and help my crowd get the best deals after they decided to leave as well. I'm very proud of my decisions then, and how it all turned out. But I never mention this in any interviews, as it might be interpreted in a wrong way.

    Raises are always awkward. Many and complex reasons why they're given or not. But physical assault? I'm sorry, I've never had it happen to me, but should it - and from someone in charge - I will drop them on their back and walk out then and there. Totally unacceptable behaviour in any context. And a toxic environment I would not want to be part of if it's common or tolerated.

    Yeah, i had a boss that shouted at people, undermining them in front of the entire company.

    I had another that used emotional blackmail that got into my head and caused me to breakdown.

    Needless to say i have patched those flaws and refuse to work for any more agencies.

    @nblackburn

    The CEO here regularily reminds the employees that he pays their salaries, and he can fire them whenever he wants. Also brags about his car, house, etc. Fucking asshole if you ask me (inferiority complex seems to affect him quite badly).

    Gave the employees a 2% increase, and then himself and the people he liked a 17% increase. Toxic, caustic, shallow little bastard.

    @Jase Every moment of everyday (insert smiley grin face here).

    I often sit at home, and then get a call at 9PM from the director moaning about some irrelevant shit.

    In what backwater country do you live?
    In Portugal (almost a third country sometimes) a complain to the authorities about a physical assault means a full inspection to the company, interviews to all employees, accounting security inspections....
    Here any person that isn't the owner will most likely be fired after a physical assault because they can cause millions in damage... (one small complaint can reveal a ton of ilegal shit, even overdue fire extenguishers get a hard ticket)
    And that also means verbal aggression...
    The only time I made a complain because I was illegally fired, when I told them I made the complaint everything changed... I was given the change to stay or live... I left cause I couldn't stand the jerk anymore, he was almost fired and got a desk position (just because he was almost retired) as the accountant and lost all powers... He was the manager.
    I've heard of an internal investigation after that... He's behing sueded for stealing money from the company.

    I live in South Africa - not backwater really, just the company that I work for is mismanaged and shitty.

    We have the CCMA here, and I got fired when he assaulted me (as you said) but got reinstated when I went to the CCMA. Under normal circumstances, I would have told the guy to eat shit, and never turned back - but I needed the money, and still need the money.

    The moment I find something better paying, I am out of here. I honestly hate this place.

    @ragnarr023 Dude, I'm also in SA. if you a skilled dev, you should be able to walk into another job super easy, I'm constantly being hounded by recruiters.

    I know it hard to leave a job and leave the security provided by the payout but if you are treated like shit then I say leave no one disserve that and they only feel it if everyone turn there back to the company

    In the end you get lot of stress and eventually depression and then they trow you out or you are forced to quit and then you have a lot of work to do before you can get back in work

    @cjbatz

    I'll check it out. Using pnet and quite a few others at the moment to scout around. But the thing with recruiters is,

    "Hmm.. I see he has skills in JAVA, C#, Python, etc - let's fucking phone him about a totally unrelated job in a totally remote town."

    Although my time will come, and I will tell these fuckers to eat a shit-swab.

    Good to hear from another dev in SA.

    @Xaque

    What you have described is what is happening at the moment. Kind of depressing and destroying my actual will to come to the place in the morning.

    I will find somewhere else, and I fucking will get out of here.
