tahnik387587y@mortanius Well it would be my fault in that case. I should have kept something for them to understand how the process works :(
-
No it's not your fault, you'd document if you did have other pressures 😊.
Or you could be brutally honest and say? -
donuts236727yI don't write documentation for others, I write it for myself to keep future me from wanting to kill someone...
It's also nice to be able to say to other "RTFM..." -
tahnik387587y@mortanius you're right in a way. I was constantly under pressure to start and continue other projects *sigh*
-
donuts236727y@tahnik well this is the thing I tell all my bosses
https://blog.trello.com/why-context...
"So now how sure are you that you want me to suddenly stop what I was doing without time to properly save the information currently in my head?" -
@tahnik exactly I made a typo in my last comment. I was supposed to say you'd document more if you had more time. You can regret it or you can learn from it dude don't fret on it though. You're leaving you now know what to prepare in the future. 😊
Best of luck with the new job!! -
donuts236727y@mortanius but to have more time you should document so you don't have to do re-work. Same with automation...
Other developers use messy Excel templates... I write apps that do the same thing in a few clicks.
And make sure to leave myself instructions on how to use and modify it -
I hope you have a horrible time rediscovering your code. Devs like you make my job harder
#YouDeserveIt #LearnTheLesson -
@mortanius @tahnik I cannot stress enough how important docs are. Your amazing work with all the automation, flexibility and error handling that you spent countless hours on and have worked flawlessly for years isn't worth shit to others if they can't find any info on how to use it or integrate with it. Who cares if your employer is crap or your incompetent boss can't distinguish an asshole from a vagina? Do it for your fellow devs and yourself! Everytime that I have to work with Devs who think it's ok not to have docs for stuff they create I feel like bitch slapping them to kingdom come. And those same types will come here to rant about having to take over something that have no fucking docs. 'boohoo pity me I have to learn this PoS that have no docs at all, what was the original Dev thinking?'. Well fuck!
I'm with @stevemk14ebr, hard lessons make us better so LEARN from it and value what you have learnt -
@tahnik also 31k ++! What the fuck I didn't think there'd be someone here who has more than that always angry, cock throating ranter who calls himself @Letmecode
-
@LrdShaper lol why that's directed I me I write docs and have probably be programming longer than you.
I was making some feel better about their error the fact the acknowledge it I the first instance shows.
Thanks for the pro tips anyway 😀😝😝😝 -
@LrdShaper read into your comment I think your confused with most of your responses. Lmao @stevemk14ebr <- he said the same thing as you in far less words and in the correct context.
You say loads of waffle but apply said shit to the wrong people. I bet your docs are a fucking mess! -
@mortanius true but unlike stevemk14ebr I don't wish for @tahnik to have a horrible time with it 😀
Also an old dog here, started work back in 93. COBOL on vax vms, you?

TLDR; I am a piece of shit who writes no documentation or no information whatsoever when I am doing something.
Created a custom version of Windows for our company couple of months ago. Before leaving, I am supposed to pass this valuable information to another new developer.
Obviously, since it has been a long time I have worked on that, I have forgotten a lot of core principles. The process is also automated in Jenkins so never really had to touch it again.
Now that I am about to explain the process to the new recruit, I realised that I have written nothing about that process. No documentation, no information. The only thing I have is a bunch of scripts automating everything for me. WHY WHY do I do this to myself :(
