Or Linux. Even fifteen year old hardware could run the most up to date software provided it performs adequately.

My workplace provides me with a Linux desktop (quite powerful one actually), but I prefer using my iMac/OS X as my desktop as the IPS LCD and fonts are more comfortable to my eyes. I have Terminal opening session straight to the Linux box by default. Maybe I can try running Thunderbird on the Linux box and do X forwarding…
On the other hand, I'm still considering getting a 5k iMac, but I'll have to pay it out of my pocket… -
@iwakirinko have you tried this, if it's a font rendering issue, this should solve it and save you a wad of cash.
