miau3227yNot just COBOL. I worked for a bank on a PL/1 system a while back. They still had the original tutorials and punch cards from the 60s lying around 😮😂
-
Tobias4857yThe place I work at still uses a work registration and invoicing program built in COBOL. It runs on a VM that every employee has to RDP into, because it doesn't work on 64 bit PCs. Luckily a migration has been scheduled

nntoan1217yHad bad times while working with that fucking language, till that time I even never heard about COBOL before, but seems only Japanese'd like to use it?
-
@omar10594 google it. A very bad thing...
The grandfather of a lot of modern languages. C family otherwise -
vringar16197y@miau fuck yeah PL/1!
I'm gonna get an introduction and some beginner level tasks for it in two weeks.
I am unreasonably hyped for this but I am just happy to finally stop reviewing documentation. -
juunas1637yPretty easy, for them the reward/risk ratio is not big enough to warrant a rewrite of their critical applications. A bug in the new system could cause massive damage. Migration would be hard. It would be very expensive to build also because of the robustness requirements.

Thank God banks still use Cobol...
As a robotics engineer with Cobol knowledge my brother got work for two years updating ATM machines -
jshrt1407yHaha nice one, probably cuz of its low level of abstraction so to better track critical bugs

Ederbit7267yRecently got the advice from someone, who is a Tech Manager at a very big Company in my County to learn COBOL. A lot of companies are on the lookout since everyone who knows Cobol is retireing. Said Company provides Software Solutions for numerous banks in my country..
..But fuck that I'm not learning Cobol. -
@Ederbit. It's really not that bad. The syntax is very straightforward. Once you understand the variable declaration it gets better
