!rant but help?

I currently have Kali (for labs I'm working on to teach myself the things I didn't learn in school), Ubuntu (downloaded for school), and Fedora (downloaded for my database class)... other than Kali already having Metasploit in it, I don't see a difference between these and I know there are more versions of Linux.

What would be a good starting place for every day use, that'll support Citrix receiver (required for work no idea what its requirements are but I can find out, if i can't use it in Linux, I'll dual boot) and virtual box (or other virtual software, don't mind learning new systems), and that i can also have room to grow for security learning?

Ubuntu is great, it’s equipped with everything an everyday user would need.

I forced myself to use only ubuntu server(no gui) on my laptop for 2 months and even thought it had no gui it was bearable for everyday use.

@just-basic-user I need GUI for work when I'm on call, but I haven't been displeased with Ubuntu GUI..

@taylorviktorya If I need to sort popular linux distros I have used from easy to hard:
    Elementary OS
    Ubuntu GUI
    Parrot OS
    Kali Linux
    Arch Linux
    Server Ubuntu
FreeBSD(not linux but still UNIX and very powerful).

@just-basic-user this will help me get started. Thank you!

@runfrodorun would you add anything else to this?

@Linuxxx what about from a security point of view, since I want to learn that better?

@taylorviktorya I get mentioned in a security related question, I feel honoured!
Anyways, as for daily use just use what suits you. I've been stuck on Fedora for about half a year now and I love it!
Security related, I'd recommend either Kali or Parrot Sec OS. (both linux). Imo they're great to experiment around (you could build some pentesting setup easily) and learn security related stuff.

If you'd like more info on anything related to security/linux, feel very free to contact me :).

@linuxxx citrix receiver, no clue tbh, no clue what it is even 😅. Side question (just curious),do you actually like working with Linux or do you use it because you just have to? @taylorviktorya

@linuxxx I don't use it enough to have strong feelings either way, but I do want to be comfortable using it. There's really no reason to limit myself on what I know.

    @taylorviktorya Very fair point :).

Pick Kali and one other. The reason is that it is really hard to get Kali tools in other distros.

@runfrodorun Not at the moment. My priority has shifted to figuring out how to get creators update to stop messing up my computer. Thank you for the feedback, though :)

Arch linux is great for learning and can be built to your needs

@taylorviktorya let me know if you get a fix on that one, my machine begins the installation, reboots, says it failed to install the update, and then just goes ahead and re-downloads the update. It's beginning to break me.

@tmux I'm going to refresh my os. I don't have time to keep fiddling with it. I need to be able to work. I never even got "update failed," it just broke shit and didn't bother to update.

laptop working again (assuming the update on my vpn client doesn't mess it up). Will install all suggestions to virtual box before deciding.

Thank you to everyone who have suggestions :) open to more if anything else comes to mind

@tmux didn't have recovery partition anymore, so i reinstalled the os and the update worked. It's a bit annoying, but if everything is backed up already it's less of a pain than it could be. Good luck with yours!

@taylorviktorya thanks for the update, looks like I will have to reinstall as well. Worst part is I'm in the middle of a project so I will have to tolerate it for a few weeks because I have no time to reinstall and set up everything.

@tmux that sucks!!!!!!! Good luck with that! 💔
