Just learned that the open source license from Facebook is shit

It says if u ever filed a patent case against Facebook or any of its subsideries organisation then your license to use Facebook open source stuff will be immediately revoked .

Kind of makes sense from a business perspective
  • 3
It also says that if they build something similar of what you got (copy your idea) you have 0 rights against them
  • 6
@Froot It makes every bit of business sense just zero in open source which it what it is.
  • 1
@nblackburn Well they did open source it. Would you be happier if they didn't then?
  • 3
@Froot I am indifferent to be honest, I am very skeptical of them and their take on open source.
  • 2
@nblackburn Same. I personally refuse to even use it, WhatsApp or Instagram etc but also their open source projects and so on.

Is not Open Source. It's at most 'public source' with limited reuse. It's nothing near any Open Source license, very far from academic licenses and opposite of popular LGPL. So it's better to use Angular. Or vue ;-)

@dkore if anything is truly open source then I believe it is mit license or Apache license . Please read about the react license carefully

    @Amitkumar why not GPL?

@nblackburn You didn't answer the question.

Would you be happier if they didn't release React, for example, at all rather than using this license?

@linuxxx To be honest I'm not going to switch to a lesser product because of some beliefs about licensing. If the product's good and is being actively developed then I will use it. Could even be closed source for all I care, doesn't matter.

@Froot I did answer the question, i am not going to bend over backwards to defend my opinion though.
  • 1
@nblackburn Alright. I might have taken the "I don't care" part wrong then. Guess that would answer it
  • 2
@Froot Personal opinion, you probs won't agree but hey that's what opinions are for :).

As for what you asked nblackburn, as long as companies fuck people over like this with fake ass open source licenses, yes, I'd rather have they didn't release react.

And on your tag towards me, fair enough! If that works for you, that's totally fine with me (and if it wouldn't be, I'd hope you'd just ignore this comment.) but in my case, I'd deffo switch to the lesser product, especially if the commercial one would be closed source (or the 'open source' one).
  • 1
@linuxxx It's just a difference in world view and that's ok. What's most important is not to force yours down others throat. Kind of like with penises 😆

About the lisence. How is releasing a product with thousands of man hours of work on it for free and merely covering your back in the license fucking people over? Facebook is a $500b company, you can bet your ass that any door they leave open will be taken advantage of when there's money in it. Ofcourse they will add shit like that into their license

The point of open source is to share code, plenty of people spend insane amounts of time working on it all without the corporate bullshittery.

The didn't release it out of good will, it's all part of the marketing strategy.
  • 1
@Froot literally what @nblackburn said in his last comment :)
  • 0
@nblackburn yeah. But, it's a company, a publicly traded company, you realise that right? They need to make money. People can share all the code they want but companies need to make money, period. And if they can earn money from releasing a good product for us, for free, then all the better. Means they will keep supporting it

@Froot Don't entirely agree but hey, opinions be opinions :D.
  • 0
    @linuxxx True 😊

Tho I am curious on what you don't agree with 😆
  • 1
@Froot Well if anything you just confirmed they literally cannot do something out of good will like millions of developers do so why should anybody trust them?

    Greedy, unscrupulous bastards....

@nblackburn Profit and general good to the society are not mutually exclusive. That's why. If they do a good thing and it brings profit to them then you have no reason to distrust them. It's all about motivation, if you know what motivates them then you know how they act. Corporate motivation is simple, profit
  • 1
    @nblackburn this. yes. this.
@Froot Look at @Davipar's comment, that's the exact reason I wouldn't ever user React and think it's bad (solely for it's license, yes).
  • 1
@Froot And also look at the rant itself, it also displays my views.
  • 1
@Froot Open source is a positive movement, corperations like Facebook are not part of that movement therefore it cannot be classed as part of it because they work under different motives.

Facebook wants everyone using "facebook", whether it be the network of a some other product they produce. That is the game and muppets that scream how amazing everything they shit out is are the ones they love the most because they help them realise that goal.

They literally are replacing existing technologies with their own idealistic versions to gain a monopoly and people just lap it up.

I DARE you to tell me that is normal behavior and not something to be deeply considered about.
  • 1
@nblackburn Damn I thought we had a lot of different views on shit but this is EXACTLY how I think in this case. Damn.
  • 1
@linuxxx We have only disagreed over over one thing as i remember.

I am not generally super serious on here, this is about as serious as i have been so far as it's a topic i have vested a lot of time into and have a fairly strong opinion on.
  • 1
@nblackburn Fair enough haha. And I do not remember that one thing tbh but fuck my memory anyways so yeah.

React has given a brilliant idea . I am waiting for some body to implement the own version .

According to my opinion there are front-end libraries as fast as react but the field react stands out is react-native .

I believe react is popular because of react-native

@nblackburn Hmm. Ok. Now how is me using React helping them in their goal of Facebook world dominance? I hate Facebook. But I do like react, it's a good product and I fail to see how using it is a problem.
MS Office is a closed source for-profit product. But it's head and shoulders above anything the open source community has ever produced so that's what I'm using. Same with GIMP Vs Photoshop.
Open source is good and all but I'm not going to use an inferior product just because it's open source
  • 1
@Froot By using it, you are using Facebook products allowing them to keep competition behind them (it's kind of like a vote, and you voted React making it +1 more popular than everything else).
  • 1
@nblackburn Fair enough. But it's a good product. And there's no development related downsides to using it so why should I pick a different one?

I think we have very different world views and that seems to be the root of our disagreement 😊
  • 3
@Froot Nobody is disagreeing with it being a good product, it's just made by a shit company, with next to no morals.

I don't want them to take away the hard work we have put into open source and think more people should stand up for what is right rather than let them try to take over.
  • 0
@nblackburn Fair enough. As I said, different world view 😄
  • 1
Gonna add my 2 cents. I just don’t like React 😂

I also didn’t realize that it was licensed in such a way, but seeing that makes me want to use it even less. I don’t necessarily care that tools I use be open source (though I definitely prefer it if the open source alternative is good enough), but when it comes to languages and frameworks they have to be completely open source or I will not use them.
