So from hearing all those horrible recruiter stories on here, I am still kinda anxious to contact them/apply to jobs but fuck it, gotta find something.

So this morning, I was browsing jobs and saw one that seemed interesting. Applied through the app and didn't give it a second thought (they usually contact me after a week or so).

Then, 5 minutes later I suddenly got called by a number I don't know so picked up and:

Me: Hello, this is linuxxx (not gonna use my real name :P).
R: Hello, I am {r.name}, from {r.company}. I saw you are interested in {job.name}!
Me: Holy fuck (yeah i about literally said that), I did NOT expect to get a call within 5 minutes! *suddenly realizes I have to act professional, fuck me*.
R: That's alright haha! So may I ask you a few questions?
Me: *okay so that went better than expected* Yeah sure!:

- He asked me about many things but specifically about how I got into Linux and how my interest etc for it started AND where I learned it. He was very surprised to hear that I've learned everything myself :).

So, instead of getting an ass on the line, we talked, laughed and talked job oppertunities for half an hour :D.

I am not that afraid of recruiters anymore.

Recruiters seem to have improved in the last 10 years since I had the pleasure of working with them... Think they realised they had to try and understand their market and seem to make an effort to understand the jargon

@linuxxx just wait for a few days... The horror stories will come. You will rage sooner or later!

    I've had them all.

Recruiters that tried and were useless.
    Recruiters that didn't listen.
And a recruiter who actually got me the perfect job.

The horror stories could more or less be from other countries with other standards

Your story made me smile, thank you :)

Just wait....They will make you feel like the prettiest girl at the dance then leave with someone else. I had many contacts with recruiters where they made me seem like I was a good fit for a job then nothing came of it, not even a phone interview with the hiring manager. They get your hopes up because they are reaching out to you first.

@katbreitin Well, thanks for the encouragement 😐

@linuxxx Sorry I was just venting on my recent expierences. I see your posts and comments you are very knowledgeable and will have no problem finding employment. I just wish I had a tech recruiter translation guide.

The thing is that they aren't bad, but that they're like leeches.
They leech off of you and your time.

They have tons of connections, but extremely bad abilities to connect developers to companies that would best suit them. They are bad at understanding your needs and your abilities. They are bad at understanding what the company needs.

What they're good at is making a good impression (the good ones at least).

But I can almost guarantee you, that this was a wasted 30 minutes of your life.

Now multiply that by 10, 20, or more.
Now put that in a context when you're limited on time.

In my recent experience I had to find a job fast (had to leave ASAP from my other job), and I opened my LinkedIn gates for anyone to get me. I wasted HOURS of my precious personal time preparing and participating in interviews with recruiters. Every recruiter took on average 1h of my time, over the span of
2 months. In the end I got hired directly through an acquaintance in less than 3 days.

This this the quintessential anti-rant. I really expected to read something infuriating but in the end, I got a smile. Thanks for sharing.

Good Recruiters / Good Developers = same specie <unicorn>
I am a Tech Recruiter and I never rant over the majority of the industry’s talent who rants over their bad experiences with recruiters - because let’s be honest, most recruiters are #shit. Thanks for sharing! Fellow recruiters out there who care, invest, advise and consult...not just demand...we add value and we have purpose *breed more quality recruiters! (now that’s a demand) haha

    @iSeeDevPeople

Where are you in South Africa?

I live in the US but visited there a fee years ago with an ex.

@katbreitin I’m based in Pretoria, Gauteng :) if I had to guess, did you visit Cape Town back then?

Yes it was gorgeous - broke up with the ex but seeing south africa was worth it.
