How does anyone wrangle all these fucking JS packages!
Trying to fix issue where a table overflow problem...only in firefox. Found a quick fix then discovered it does not work when there is an event with a handle.
So come to find out perfect scrollbar does not like flex nor firefox (the only browser for the end user)
Jesus christ I miss laravel.
Just realized being a developer means fixing bugs that were caused by fixing other bugs that were caused by fixing the other bugs.3
Anybody else recently figure out that watching a 5 min tutorial on using a new tool/package/extension will save you hours of frustration?
Why is there always one asshole!
New job just a month in, had a meeting where we could bring up improvements and put them on cards.
I brought up the idea of using slack so we could collaborate better or maybe a collab space. We all have our own offices or share with high walls.
The guy running the meeting has the same title as me said we never had that before, are you unhappy with yiur onboarding?
Slack or a messaging app is industry standard for even none tech companies. I was polite and said it was just a suggestion and it might make it easier to get help for the new people if there is a group chat.
Also brought up using a formatting standard so code reviews are spent commenting on spacing. I said we could you prettier to implement that and just pick a standard.
He said that was an issue because people were not paying attention before they pushed the code.
I am sorry I am new so I am rewriting and rewriting code all the time. I was to format on save and not spend time fucking formatting!
I could use a package before since it I formatted it would look like a bunch of fucking changes in git.
Why make things harder? Part of the meeting was how to get code done and PR’ed faster so it gets to the testers. Autoformatting shit would help.6
Does anyone else work for a DoD contractor? I am totally incompetent at my job and was wondering how long it would take for them to fire me.
I heard it’s harder since it’s a DoD contractor.
Not sure if I oversold myself in the interview of what but boy do I need a lot of help.11
Asking for a friend....
New job, fairly new to web development, very new to JS. I am failing miserable at my job can’t complete tickets which are mostly bug fixers created by testers. So I am debugging code that I didn’t write on a tech stack I do not know (ampersand, q, radio, lodash, react, etc)
Do I try to learn the language better?
Focus on learning debugging with dev tools and getting better at using the webstorm IDE.9
In a job that I am WAY over my head. Onboarding is a shitshow like usual the devs did not know I was starting until the day before. My only real expierence is school doing php/laravel. Very honest in my interview only a year of codecamp at a local community college and very small tasks at my old job.
This is a JS app using a bunch of old frameworks/ libraries. I was told it was React in the interview.
How long until they fire me for being i competent?
In the US and working for a defense contractor. Which I was told it was harder to fire people.
3 mos? 6 mos?5
Getting used to using ubuntu on virtual box. Responsiveness is slow as fuck and I have 128gb of RAM. Spent all last week configuring my box and sublime text in order to have to set up a new one due to repo issues. Any advice?6
Started new job today with another dev working on a different project. Told him I was hired as front end dev but was a full stack wanna-be. He said he mainly coded in php/java. In the course of the conversation I asked him what is preferred IDE/editor was, telling his I liked Sublime text but was warming up to VS code. He said he never heard of Sublime Text and only used Notepad++.12
Not exactly a dream abour coding but my favorite instructor in college.
I dreamt the secret police came to arrest him on campus since his methods teaching cod were unorthodoxed.
As they were leading him away I was screaming and crying - “He’s the best teacher here, what are you doing!”
This was an email sent to me using my name as a greeting. This had to be a mass email that no one proofread.
I love how the list everything general JS skillset using odd verbage and then throw C# at the end.
What should I respond with?
I am feeling snarky today.7
The place is poorly run, I drink beer at my desk in secret or worse have tantrums like a 2 year.
Advice needed please.
I have an interview friday for a front end developer. Currently I am junior dev with just a full stack certiticate.
It’s the typical skillset requiremnts JS HTML and CSS with familiar with React, Angular and Vue.
As far as languages I really do not know JS but I know php. Taken a JS class in school found it to be fairly simple and that was my second language I learned.
How do I spend the next 48 hours? Learning JS? Spending time going over frameworks? Refreshing HTML/CSS?
I am much stronger back end than front end but I am hoping this will be more of a front end engineer job requiring the configuration of node packages and such.1
If you are in the US how are you preparing for the next pending recession?
I am thinking about staying at my low paying but stable job where they have never done massive layoffs because they are not publically traded.
Not a rant - just wondering if anyone else witnessed a really awkward closing talk at a conference.
Attended a mandatory JS conference yesterday where all the speakers gave the typical conference talks on new ideas, frameworks, packages with code demonstrations. Most of talks were great and the some of the speakers were extremly humorous making the whole audience laugh which is hard to do. The talk right before the keynote speaker was like this.
Then the keynote started...
The end presenter was an asian-american woman (normally would not metion race/ gender but it’s important to the story) whose talk was basically how the white males of the world are controlling tech an their bias and privilege are marginalizing the rest of us who are not white american ‘cis-males’
She had no data and weak examples, such as sensors on automatic soap despeners not working on darker skins tones (that’s not racist it’s physics). Another example was a plugin where true=male and false=female. That is not gender biased it’s just lazy programming.
At one point she said:
“Have you even been to a party at a rich white guy’s house? There boring! I’m sorry”
This was just a talk about her feelings, if I was not surrounded by my coworkers I would have left.
I feel like this was not appropiate talk for one track conference since it traps everyone into listening. Especially where attendance is obligatory by your employer.
The conference should have warned people it would be an uncomfortable talk and invite people to start happy hour early if they chose.
To add to the weirdness in the closing remarks of one of the organizers patted himself on the back for supplying the women’s bathroom with tampons. He even created a slide for it with a tampon illustration.
Example slide from her deck.72
OMG you fucking dick! All I asked if you minded if I created a PR to push your branch to prod because test was down.
You didn’t have to bother the fucking software architects in a group chat with me saying I needed fucking help.
If you wrote the isset function correctly to begin with or even put the JSON file in the correct repo like every other file on the site this would not be a problem.
Fuck contractors! Fuck Assholes!2
If I get one more escalation from the IT helpdesk about a login issue but it’s actually an broken link I am going to screem! Find the new link (it’s in multiple places) give it to them and then put the page location in the ticket you dumb fucks so I can update the URL.
This person called in 3 times over the weekend over this and no one thought to have give them the link.1
Commitizen Fucking Sucks!!!!
It makes me commit less and write shittier commit msgs because I am not sure if it’s going to bark at using a capital letter.
After lunch today I had review meeting with the stakeholders on project where the content was late plus a lot more than previously stated requiring changes to the angular app. So I ate a shit ton of garlic from the salad bar as we sat and my desk and reviewed it.2
Sorry I can not fix your fucking 404 error, this problem is specific to you not site wide call the fucking help desk!1
A google engineer just requested to connect with me on LinkedIn.
Not going lie it made me feel special.1
This asshole is out of his fucking mind if he thinks I am going to waste my Friday night waiting around to update a URL on the employee intranet.
News flash if it’s a tool people use everyday they have it bookmarked. No uses the fucking employee intranet because it’s old and it sucks.
You get a list of the users and email them telling them of the update if you are too dumb to figure out a redirect.
Just received a Jira request to remove training videos from the business ethics page or our employee intranet because we longer hold the license's.
When I overhear a senior dev explain a static class to a dev who makes twice as much as me it kind of pisses me off.2
Bad case of schadenfreude the biggest asshole on the dev team is having issues with his code merge! Someone merged 2 mins before him...lol. This is why you used the command line not the GUI!
