I think originally the idea that the data was spread on multiple servers or so but it got abused

@retoor That's only for people who paid a lot of money. In the cheaper deals in azure/aws/gcloud, our data got stored on one server only (no mirror). Also regular backup requires us to fork out more money. :-D

@daniel-wu Are there any cloud providers where it's economical to download a copy of your DB every month onto a HDD you keep on your desk? I'm pretty sure that counts as off-site backup.

I miss re-writable DVDs. That was the shit back in the day.

@lorentz Depending on the provider, you might be allowed to perform mysqldump command over the network. It will be slow though, if your database is huge.

@SidTheITGuy Why not still use BluRay/DVDs for backup? They haven't disappeared altogether.
Why were rewritable DVDs so good? Never used any rewritable ones.

@gitstashio Because of price point differences in writers/readers.

DVD reader - Cheap.

DVD writer/reader - Little expensive but affordable.

Blu Ray reader - Expensive

Blu Ray writer/reader - Holy crap expensive (For its time).

Also I used DVDs when I was in school and it was primarily shared between friends for games.

Re-writable ones allowed us to erase and put new data on it. DUH.

By the time Blu ray writers/readers came out I was already in college.
