@CozyPlanes I've had a friend who disabled updates AND the windows 10 upgrader thingy on his windows 7 laptop. Went for a break. Came back. Windows 10 was installing. Afterwards all data gone. He now hates windows 10!

@linuxxx Yeah bad luck there. IMO the key to avoiding that upgrade was disabling the registry keys for it as soon as news broke of what was happening. I did that and subsequently never got gwx running on my 7 machine again.

10 weeks later: Some new Ransomware appears that exploits some patched vulnerability of Windows.

"Ugh Windows sucks soo much. Fucking OS. Install Linux!"

Then complain about malware.... And as usual blame windows....

Ehhh. Just use Never10 instead of having a vulnerable system.

@Condor i usually disable updates here because internet sucks so much, a small update just hangs the whole internet here

@Condor yeah, we have looked for every ISP that can deliver here (all delivery method possible) and best we're supposed to get is 512kbps. we can be happy we actually have 1.5mbps, but we really can't do anything else other than 4g (limited and unstable)

@Jop- Apparently my Windows hasn't received the note. It never restarts on it's own. It just got an obnoxious popup window that reminds me.

While patching on Linux is clearly better, I don't get the demonization of Windows update. I'm getting the impression that a good portion of the update problems steems from misconfiguration and exaggeration. Since it is a meme now and cool to hate on Windows update.

@Jop- i call BS... Been letting my PCs update automatically for years... Nothing was destroyed with no issues at all. Not saying it never happens or MS code is always perfect, but this is just one of those stereotypes Linux fans have thrown at Windows.

If you are a software dev and recommend switching off updates... Then u r not a software dev... Or at least not a good one...
