Ai depression—— I feel increasingly depressed and hopeless about potentially applying for junior dev jobs - I feel like why? What’s the point when GPT can do the low level junior stuff in place of me? I would really appreciate some words of motivation…. Is it still worth it?

AI has been out in the market for long enough that, if it was good enough to replace devs, it would have done the job by now. But that hasn't happened, has it?

Also stop applying for junior dev positions, there is NO SUCH THING as a junior. Just call yourselves a senior dev even if you have just a year of experience. There's no way recruiters can fact check it.

Same could be said of many jobs nowadays, not just programming.
Gpt is good at tackling problems with a limited scope. It’ll help you solve small pieces of the puzzle. You’ll still need a human to orchestrate and put the pieces together.
Writing good google search queries was an important part of the job (and still is), now asking good questions to gpt is also a valuable skill in the industry

@sugarcube You got this. Go for it, don't sell yourself short, and find somewhere that appreciates your value and is prepared to invest in your development.

Consider that many companies are slow to adopt change.

Heck, last year's conferences were still talking about "digitalisation" as one of the biggest markets for tech - something you'd think most businesses would've done since ages ago in the 90s or early 00s.

The fact that many companies are supposedly still quite analog and are trying to "go digital" means they are like +20 years behind what we think a modern company should be.

Also consider that what you read about in the tech community doesn't necessarily reflect the job market.

For example Nuxt and Next might be trending 100x more than Java and C# but there's 100x less demand for it in the actual job market.

If you read tech blogs 3 years ago you'd guess Web3 was a sure bet but I don't think there ever really was any large demand for it outside a niche of crypto startups, most "regular companies" didn't even bother

If no one hires juniors there will eventually be no seniors

it never was worth it, since we're all gonna die, and the universe is finite in time.

there never was any meaning you could have lost.

so screw it (especially your doubts) and just live your life the way you deem fit.

@SidTheITGuy I never thought of that ! I figured maybe they go easy on juniors and start small with tasks, but you say that regular nonjuniors there’s no difference?? Huh that’s great then cuz then I can jump into better pay! Thanks a lot :) :)

@sugarcube please don’t follow @SidTheITGuy ‘s advice. Companies may not always be able to fact check your experience, but there’s a million other ways they can assess your skills. Bullshitting your way into a job is probably the worst way you can start your career.
Be honest about your level. Show that you’re motivated to tackle the unknown, and push through until you’ve reached a decent level. In 1-3 years you’ll be able to start applying for mid-level positions in other companies

@black-kite Tell me you don't have experience without telling me you don't have experience.

At least you acknowledge that companies can't fact check ur experience.

In my career I've met 100s of devs who call themselves a "senior" dev but lack rudimentary skills.

One 'senior' dev I met had 10 years of exp yet had no idea what git is. What about it?

Calling yourselves a junior and having that mindset is only hurting you, and no one else.
