I use star names for my hostnames. Kudos for going with Arch. If you got any doubt and it's not on the wiki or the forums you can also head to the IRC in Freenode #archlinux. Cool people over there ;-).

Gentoo is a bit harder and the main thing you'll be looking for as a novice is not so much getting it to run but to learn some linux internals. You get to compile the whole system (or most of it - haven't done it in a while), so there's a lot of flags and options that you'll have to look up, and if something fails you'll have to retrace your steps and recompile.

Guess that if you're into it for learning you could run Arch a few weeks, try as much as possible to configure everything without a GUI and then set for Gentoo or LFS if you still feel like it's necessary.

I've been a happy Arch user for a few years and I sincerely think it's the best distro out there ;-).

@c2wiki it really is man. Sadly my arch machine went to laptop heaven after it was knocked down from its desk by unknown forces :( a lot of stuff there was configured and selected by me with care and a shitload of love :( heck I even configured conky all the way to the Lua source. I still feel bad for that pc, worked absolutely amazing and I really never had any issue with it at all.

@ParkCity that's great when you are ready for next level shit go for the gentoo challenge.
