So, recently, a person in the US was arrested for stalking people.

The evidence was some data from google, a work computer and from a VPN provider.

Let's take a quick look at that VPN provider. It (PureVPN) says on their privacy policy page that they do NOT store logs.

Guess from what VPN provider the FBI got those logs? Yes, PureVPN!

Althouh I'm happy they got this creep off the street, it still means that PureVPN has been lying to its entire customer base.

I personally hope that their reputation will be destroyed now because this should never happen.

A screenshot I took from their privacy policy page is attached below.

Keep your eyes open when choosing a VPN provider!

    Any recommendations on good VPN providers?

    The only legit VPN service is Private Internet Access. FBI previously asked them for records and they refused it.

    Edit: here is the link to the proof if anyone is interested: https://torrentfreak.com/vpn-provid...

    @SZenC Still gotta do loads of research but I think that NordVPN/PrivateInternetAccess/MullVad look quite good :)
  • 5
    @tahnik I've used them yes, their service is awesome! Problem I've got is that they are US based and could be forced to implement backdoors if requested so without that becoming public :/
  • 1
    @wolt if you don't officially operate in the US, they can't do anything about it
  • 0
    @cybeerboy Haven't looked into them much, sorry!
  • 1
    btw do you have link to the news? @linuxxx
  • 0
    @tahnik Yeah gimme a sec!

    The full first page of duckduckgo when I searched for this is entirely filled with those links :P

    @cybeerboy Could never know. I'll still use it though, you can't prove anything about any search engine anyways and ddg seems a good option for privacy :)

    What do you think about Proton VPN from guys that made Protonmail? It looks pretty good
  • 10
    @Torbuntu Where did you find that girl/woman?! I'd like to go there and see if there are any left :P
  • 1
    Any facts about/against ra4wvpn ?
  • 1
    Oh you are so lucky! @Torbuntu
  • 3
    @wholl0p they log everything. People hacked into their vpn servers (RCE vulnerabilities) and downloade sql databases :/. And yeah, ive been using them for a while :(
  • 2
    @linuxxx Shit 😂
  • 2
    @Condor True. The only thing is that saved data/logs can also be abused
  • 1
    @linuxxx sudo rm -rf /logs/
  • 3
    @SZenC /var/log/* :P
  • 2
    @linuxxx depends on where you dump the logs, indeed. 🙃

    I just got ovpn, anyone got any dirt on them? 🙄
  • 1
    @makx Seems to be a pretty alright I think
  • 2
    Any expectation of privacy in our modern age is almost naive. We have traded our privacy for technology. And honestly I am okay with that. I have nothing to hide. If the government wants to know about my embarrassing fetishes, the games I play, or how much money I spend on Weeabo crap...go for it. I really don’t care.

    @deusprogrammer Hmm right so could you please have a camera crew following you around (including at home) full time broadcasting live on Facebook/youtube?

    Next to that please dump your usernames/passwords online and post a link here (including login links), make a public Google driver folder containing all your bank statements.

    Stay tuned for more :)

    @ThatDude @Condor If you're the only person using your private VPN, it doesn't help a bit: Every outgoing connection can be tracked down to you (provided your the data is demanded from your hosting service).

    @theCalcaholic Alrighty then, any advice? :)

    Diy DigitalOcean vpn ftw
  • 0
    @epse I like hostmaze and servdiscount more but hey everyone their own :)
  • 0
    @linuxxx free 50 bucks DigitalOcean credit for students. That's why
  • 0
    @Condor In that case there is no problem with normal VPN providers either. :)

    @ThatDude github education pack. Really simple to sign up for and you get loaaaads of goodies

    @CopyPasteCode Since I use ProtonMail, I added on VPN for a bundle discount. So far, so good. I still have PIA, but they are blocked a lot on legit streaming sites. Windows client for ProtonVPN is really nice. For my Mac, I just downloaded their OpenVPN profiles and imported them into Viscosity. Speeds seem decent. Based in Switzerland. Not cheap, but good stuff isn't always. I have been running 24/7 for about a week.

    Also, isn't PureVPN the place that traced some hacker harassing someone out of a Chicago node, or is this the situation we're discussing? From what I understand, they don't log as a rule, but if someone is being harassed, for instance, they post a notice that they are turning logging on for a specific node before they do it.

    I'm not sure what a good middle ground would be here. VPN access should not be used as a cloak to harass or stalk people. The phrase, "This is why we can't have nice things" comes to mind.

    @linuxxx we really should chat 😊

    I'm not really get in VPN unless it's for accessing a site that requires anonimity. Usually I had some free to use VPN tools like anonymox. Trying to find out now any best VPN provider
  • 1
    @PhantomBKB As we've seen with PureVPN, that statement isn't necessarily true. Also, that's not the main point I don't think. PIA is US based, so they can be forced to START keeping logs without telling anyone. Anything US based is basically useless in terms of privacy or anonymity.
  • 1
    Just don't consider any of these VPN Providers as an anonymous way for surfing. Use Tor instead.
  • 0
    @jespersh Tor *is* anonymous. You need his efforts and expenses (or ist stupid users :P) to deanonymize someone.
  • 2
    Wait so, me simply using the Tor browser is not good enough? PLEASE I NEED TO KNOW 😂
  • 0
    @xxxx It is if you keep scripts disabled and such (the default settings are fine).

    BTW. 'his' = huge in my previous comment
  • 0
    Pia is known good.

    BolehVpn has my attention but I'm not entirely sure.
  • 0
    IMHO the only vpn service you can trust is the one you built yourself with great care.
  • 0
    They do not Monitor it, which is mot the same as "store it"

    ... No?

    @Ashkin DUE TO TOO MANY NOTIFS I MISSED THIS COMMENT.

    Yeah that would be awesome! I think we wouldn't have to argue on what platform to use 😊

    Only one problem right now, due to an android bug I have to reinstall signal about every day :(
  • 1
    @Ashkin so are you actually up for chatting? :)
  • 1
    @ThatDude 😞 I just get so many notifications that some get washed away :'(
  • 1
    @linuxxx Absolutely!

    I'm not about to defend the rights of a stalker... If I'm gonna be surveiled over fuckall I'm glad they catch a prick every now and then.

    How did they know to check with PureVPN? And what logs were shared?

    I wouldnt be surprised if the log is client only... And never sent home.

    They just came across it whilst sifting that work computer, fuck it...

    I think PureVPN is already very shady VPN in the market, I have read a lot of posts that PureVPN is Pakistan Based VPN, Mean seriously Pakistan based VPN claiming that it is best. I want to give a standing ovation to PureVPN users that they are still using it.

    However I am very conscious about my online privacy, and I cant use these shady VPNs, Recently I have a signup for Surfshark VPN, No don't it is one of the best VPN that I had ever used. So I recommend Surfshark (https://reviewsed.com/surfshark-vpn...) to those who are still using PureVPN.

    @markophillips Three immediate red flags:
    - Based in a British (owned?) country and thus under the 5 eyes regime.
    - I can't even find their privacy policy on their homepage...
    - They use Google analytics on their homepage... So... A "privacy respecting" company uses analytics from a company integrated within government mass surveillance programs and having a very bad privacy track record....

    I'd stay the hell away from this provider myself.

    (I use MullVad)
  • 0
    Yes you are right there is no privacy policy mentioned on the homepage, MullVad is good.
