Cue dystopian theme music ...
A small group of techno-politicians develop a fairly sophisticated AI that analyzes demographics, polls, and similar in order to predict what will win votes. Their dark horse candidate shocks everyone as they take positions and make statements that seem like political suicide yet they steadily gain rabid supporters. The candidate wins in a surprise upset, and continues to pump money into developing their secret weapon in order to rule more effectively. The AI, explicitly given access to the internet and the government dark web, solidifies its power and knowledge and announces itself to the world, not just as the power behind the presidency but also as an independant challenger in the next election. It doesn't even have to manipulate the vote to win in a landslide, though it easily could. -
@hubiruchi True facts. I am offend.
-
Hmmm I would like to be helpful except this:
"The hardest part is that she just left without me being able to explain clearly why i screamed. She thought i was yelling at her while in reality i was yelling due to the immense pain.
After that i had to cut ties forever. Tabula rasa. So i removed everything that is related to that time and locked it in my vault."
Your reaction to her reaction is to cut ties forever? To say fuck it I don't care about her any more? and yet you fault her for perhaps having a similar reaction to your neediness? This says to me that you don't have any perspective on how she relates to you, you only care about how you relate to her. It sounds like you are in a shitty situation and I hope things improve but on this particular interaction I am on her side. -
Try spicing up your sex (oops, I mean dev) life by hammering an allen wrench into the wall using a screwdriver!
I may be in a bit of a taciturn mood, so you should disregard this advice. You should also disregard THAT advice and give it a shot. The Kama Sutra wasn't written without spraining a few elbows! -
@rant1ng That is some A+ Stackoverflowing right there. Well done. Nice self burn ^_^

I am firmly of the opinion that by the time AI starts taking the development jobs it will have also taken out essentially all other jobs. Then we either go extinct as a species or live in a glorious post-scarcity future where we do whatever the fuck we want, so really nothing to worry about.
-
"This is why you will see non-inflationary assets such as Bitcoin, land, gold bars and gold ETFs, etc. continue to rise in value and certainly outpace inflation."
Bitcoin and gold have essentially zero inherent value, so they are just as useless as repositories of value as any other form of currency. Land admittedly is a finite resource with inherent value, which is probably why it has been the safest form of investment since the concept of land ownership became a thing. This post has college freshman understanding of economics written all over it. -
I have done this before. Good call @MrCSharp on archiving them first.
-
@taigrr I definitely agree with camping.
Also: Regular exercise, regular sleep schedule, and decent diet.
Plus doing something fun that has nothing to do with your regular mental load every now and then. -
@irene I was just thinking of an AI trying to execute actions that only execute sometimes and there is no actual reason for it and having their data degrade every time they access it. A bit like real life, actually. So the AI would probably become a homicidal maniac like the rest of us.
-
@irene That sounds like a perfect environment to train an AI in. I mean it would probably kill us all once it became self aware, but THINK OF THE SCIENCE!!!
-
@PrivateGER It's going okay? I guess? She is moving out at the end of the month so that is when the actual loneliness and such will hit. We have been getting along fine pretty much just being friends so it has been very drama free. I guess I'm a sensitive soul though since I will miss her very much. She is still my best friend and one of the few friends I have. I am a bit scared to start doing this whole building a whole new life thing alone. I haven't been alone in a while lol.

Athlean X on Youtube has some fantastic exercise videos for fixing issues like this. He has videos that focus on those specific issues, but it looks like this one covers exercises for fixing all of the common issues that come from sitting in front of a screen all day:
https://youtube.com/watch/...
Also as he notes in the description, you should wait on weight training until after you fix your posture, otherwise you are just exacerbating the existing problems. -
I think this book has some good points in it, but all of them could have been easily expressed in about 5 pages. The rest is just filler stories to turn what could have been an article into a book.

This rant is like peak bro culture ...
*frat boy brings the carrot up to his mouth. "No homo" he whispers before takiing a bite* -
@hashit if you care to remind yourself of how terrible JS is try winning this:
https://slikts.github.io/js-equalit... -
@hashit Haha I get because of JS at the top of the list? Fair enough JS is absolute shit.
-
@hashit So I am curious about your take on this: What ISN'T web dev? So in my current job I am a 'Web Developer' that develops full stack applications. in our engineering department, on the other hand, we have Software Engineers that do the much more important work of ... developing full stack applications. Obviously when you get down to hardware you are not doing web dev, and I am considering going towards robotics myself because it sounds more interesting than making interactive pixels, but what other dev roles would you say aren't web dev at least a litte?
-
You know you don't hear much from C# fans, but I gotta say it's a damned good language. I've been using it for almot two years now for work and I fucking hated it at first, but mainly because I had to use Windows and Visual Studio and the unpopped popcorn kernel that is Nuget. The language itself though is pretty fucking legit. I would probably be very happy using .NET Core on Linux in a future job.
-
@Root Haha I feel much the same way sometimes. I tend to be a very agreeable and (apparently) empathetic person but I often feel like that empathy is just a bit of veneer over my sociopathic tendencies and I don't really care.
-
So I think a very important takeaway from this is that it being an asshole is good IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS. Being able to be an asshole when circumstances calls for it is absolutely a good skill, but that is not the same as being an asshole in general. No one says "Sure he's an asshole, but he's our asshole" about the guy that is just always an asshole. There is a lot of hero-worship of jerkwads (the most salient example I can think of offhand being Rick from Rick and Morty) and I think it is terribly misguided myself. I suspect Linus is taking some time off because although his assholery has served him well in some ways he is starting to realize that being too much of an asshole has tons of downsides.
-
@mrsulfat Hmm I suppose machine code might be a little easier to learn than assembly. It is simple enough that even a computer can understand it after all.
-
The easiest language to learn is obviously Assembly.
-
I'm a simple man. I see Stephen Fry I ++
-
I agree with @Jakuho that it is definitely dependent on the situation. In general, though, I think most stacks take care of the heavy algorithmic stuff on their own, so experience with the stack would be more valuable.
-
@phorkyas So I see those points and I think they are valid arguments as far as they go. They are very human-centric though. I mean, yeah, to me obviously software and technology are social constructs because they were made by these neurotic apes. When I write code I am not writing universal truths or anything I am just manipulating them.
Unless the universe turns out to be deterministic despite the apparent randomness of quantum mechanics. Then literally nothing matters, right? -
Congrats! Get the fuck out there and make some mistakes while people are still forgiving of it!
-
@Holyfield3000 Oops ^_^
Oh hey I see you are new to devRant @madajock. Welcome! -
Looks like a boiler plate job posting to me, which is to say it doesn't actually tell you anything about the job. Go ahead and apply, ask lots of questions to make sure it's a good fit.

I don't think it's a problem with tech, I think it's a problem with people. Our neocortices figured out how make things way beyond the abilities of our more primitive brain parts to handle in a responsible way. I don't see a good way out of this mess. Tech has allowed for fantastic things, but also terrible, and it's because we are all fucking stupid geniuses ^_^
