The amount of willful ignorance about how “master/slave” might be offensive to some people is disheartening. Not surprising, but disheartening.
I thought it was suspect back in the 90s when I was configuring IDE hard drives.
There are loads of terms that express the exact same relational concept, that don’t have their roots in exploitative human relationships.
If you disagree, kindly fuck off. Your shitty attitude is why tech is predominantly white and male.29 -
I was at my uncle's village.
Where getting internet is big thing, very far from main city.
I was talking with one shopkeeper.
I told him ,I am software developer.
He ask me questions that
"How can I improve my business using software?"
To help me figure out situation.
He told me problems he is facing right now.
Accounting/inventory management/contact's with big retailers.
He was so genuinely explaining it.
He don't want next billion dollar startup.
He want to solved his problem.
I am really impressed after that conversation because person who don't know what is excel is talking about ERP software.
I am going to develop that software.

"As if a device can function if it has no style. As if a device can be called stylish that does not function superbly… yes, beauty matters. Boy, does it matter. It is not surface, it is not an extra, it is the thing itself." - Stephen Fry1

!dev, very !rant
Going to Romania tomorrow and the next day will finally meet my girlfriend's parents (she's from there). More nervous than I expected to be about a (hopefully) simple thing.14 -
Do you all sometimes have this strange feeling, that.. actually humanity would not lose anything, if we killed all that useless tech we earn our money with?
Yeah, we get all that propaganda how technical prowess is empowering and sure we all know it's a nice feeling if you can apply the right clicks and bit flips to make the machine do as you want so you feel like the apprentice's sorcerer.
BUT even if you believe your user story adds some business value to some abstract package - what do these devices mostly do? Distract, diffuse your focus, envy other eye-porn provider, endless aberration of clips.
Fuck social media!
(Yes, I know I am on one, but this is because I haven't given up hope on this one.)6 -

I'm rewriting a game from C++ to C just for the purpose of learning and adding more features, however; after I refactored the code, the game broke with a segmentation fault and I have no idea where the memory issue is.
I've been debugging for hours now and I've got nothing. FML5 -
Uncle Bob says:
Software Craftsmanship is not about glory and rockstar status. It’s not about being the overtime hero, or the last minute cowboy. Rather it is about discipline, professionalism, and the desire to constantly improve.3 -

Just started reading this book ..
The first chapter and half are pretty interesting.
Their explication of Optimal Stopping and “The Secretary Problem” made think about scenarios where its possible to use in my life.
Ps: I think that what the books wanted!5 -
Apart from linux, it has to be vue.js, quasar and express.js
Vue.js had made my development extremely easy, faster and managable
Quasar brought great Styling and various other powerful features to vuejs. Thus helping save even more time
And express.js don't need any explanation. Better code organization and easy to get started. -
Git.
The smallest utility made its way to being the largest companies must-have, the most critical part of the whole development landscape.
Using just plain C, Git can shred huge amounts of data insanely fast. It never gets old.
Git is a developer's scalpel.11 -
That moment when you wake up from a dream with a smile on your face, because you met the girl of your life there.
But then, few minutes later, you realize that it was just a dream. And to that comes that, I can barely remember anything about her.4 -
I just decided to take some time off from work, and use my savings to survive next months. I have been dealing with work related problems for a few years now, and since last year I was sure I needed time to recover my health and improve my skills, to get better job opportunities.
I was trying to balance my life and my time, working a bit less, trying to rest, study, and so on. I was hopeful I could achieve my goals just fine with some adjustments. But now... I just don't care.
Last Thursday my mother was diagnosed with cancer.
Two weeks ago, my only brother lost his job.
The same happened with my bf, few months ago, and he needed to move to another state to get a new job.
There is so much going on... Sometimes I just feel like panicking.
It's sad to fear the future, and deal with so much uncertainty.
It's hard to deal with work and money issues. It's even harder to deal with serious health issues.
I hope things will get better somehow, but I needed to vent this. Sometimes life can be a bitch.5 -
Hello all! First post here. I've been a lurker for a long time and have enjoyed all the content.
I start a new gig working remote on Monday (second remote gig) I'm hoping it's better than the last one. How is everyone?8 -
I'm curious, what kinds of projects is devRant working on right now? What's your most recent project, personal or interesting, that you've picked up recently?
Mine is a program that automates schoolwork for you.34
