So going to university in about 1 year, and ive been wondering, if I'm going into computer science or software engineering (my top 2 programs of choice), what laptop specs would u recommend? I'm currently running a computer with 8gb DDR3 RAM and a 5 year old Intel Pentium, integrated graphics, needless to say I think an upgrade would benefit. Thoughts?

Finally started summer vacation and have time to develop something, but don't know what to make. How do u get ideas?😕

Am I missing something? After going through the Manjaro installation process, turning on the computer and selecting the operating system in the grub menu, it never allows me to boot successfully. I even reinstalled the os and same result. It always says something like this when booting... 😒

Do you ever go into a public space and see everyone with their dell xps, acer swift 3, asus zenbook, msi gaming laptops, and then pull out your cheap af heavy plastic laptop and think to yourself:
"Why aren't I rich?"

So I tried installing Manjaro a few weeks back, and it wouldn't boot. Long story short, I just reinstalled Ubuntu. The reason I wanted to try Manjaro however was because Ubuntu was just giving me issues, and I needed a change. So, do u think it's worth making another bootable Manjaro drive and trying again? Or is it likely to have the same result?

And if it sucks, switching to Manjaro. It freezes on me once, and I'm done. I've been using the beta and it's been AWFUL (I know it was a beta, but I wanna use my computer w/o random freezes)

Does anyone else think the top menu bar on applications is way too big on ubuntu 18.04? Also, am I the only one who has a lot of ransom freezes in the os? I know its a beta version, but c'mon!

Has anyone else installed Ubuntu 18.04 and have their themes not working (I'm using arc thenes), and the top bar menu options like file, edit, etc not appearing? I can't find fixes.

AND WHY IS 18.04 SLOWER WITH GNOME?!

This better all be fixed by the final release. Also by slower, I mean animations, opening certain apps, like wth.

So... Is arc really that hard to set up, and install/use? Im coming from Ubuntu, and what they're doing with 18.04, doesn't seem amazing. I'm afraid because I'm not using a very well known laptop, so I fear I'd get trapped with setting up wifi or something. I just really want a Linux distro, with SPEED. That being said, I still want compatibility with both my hardware, and the programs i use on a regular basis. This also may sound like a terrible question, but do all Ubuntu programs work on arc and other distributions? I doubt it, but worth asking 😅

To all Canadians here,
Looking to study computer science in university. For those of you with jobs in computer science, did u get a bachelor's degree and went straight to a job? Where did u study? Did u get a master's degree? For those not with a master's degree, would you recommend getting one? I'm lost 😭 I really want to try to go to University of Toronto to study computer science, but it's so competitive and I don't know if I'll even get in. Did any of you study there? How did it help in your career?

When you were beating your friend in a course all year, only for them to ace the final project with you flopping. Carried them all the way to the end, and now I have to ace the exam to beat him overall, or I'll never hear the end of it 😒

So I thought... Hey, why not bring my laptop running Ubuntu to school. It's faster than my Windows one, and I use it all the time at home.

Then I realized 99% of students will nag me about how I'm using a knock off version of Mac Os 😒

But if I did bring it, maybe I could FINALLY teach my computer science "teacher" something.
