Haha Crystal Reports, haven't thought about that since 2008
-
I remember working in a very similar environment 15 YEARS AGO!! Can't believe this is still a thing.

Team Falcon
...so you can say "we're a great falcon team"
(Say it quickly) -
Brisbane, Australia, 4G

Pi 3 connected to TV, playing never ending loop of random Seinfeld episodes

Can you let us know whether there was a specific reason for Ubuntu Mate over Raspbian? And what you're using the pi for?
-
@Vikram had to Google Dynamic Reports...
Short answer: this was ages ago, well before Dynamic Reports existed. -
You get a +1 simply for the first line in your summary, which is what appears in the collabs list. In short, you have explained the problem you are trying to solve in just a single line, one that is not technical and something that lots of people can relate to. Great selling of your idea.

@dfox FYI I know software companies who use push in marketing automation products, consider this a feature. I.e. The use case that majority of users don't want every bloody device pinging every time there's a notification....just the device I logged in on, most recently.
-
In my experience this basically creates work for mr @dfox and @trogus. Imagine, right now, the app simply triggers a push the moment an action happens. Easy. Code it once, a-a-a-and done!
But once you start looking at something which requires grouping (like what being implied in this rant) long story short would mean work by the devRant creators to implement queues and workers and blah blah. I can understand why this would be a 'nice to have'. -
I used to develop this stuff. It's service workers doing it mostly, try googling 'progressive web apps' for more info.
Short answer to your question is yeah you can build something yourself following one of many tutorials available online. But, once your requirements start getting a bit advanced such as segmentation, personalization, and attribution, you might want to start looking at a vendor who does this stuff for a living. -
@dfox, Like the idea, and agree with your reasons for the price.
It's just that...14 days? Seems a bit short. Why not 30 days?
14 days may be bordering on the scenario where someone might miss it. Not sure what your DAU/WAU activity is like, so this may not be applicable, but imagine if a user went on holidays, or for whatever reason wasn't in the app for a couple weeks. -
I actually thought this rant was a reference to wanting a push notification when there's a new weekly rant topic. I.e. Get alerted without having to open the app...
-
Man, I wish my clients were half as helpful as this community, in assisting with debugging. Good stuff everyone.
-
What has your thought process / discussions been like (if any) around
1. Commercialization of the app?
2. White-labeling the app and creating spin-offs such as pmRant, waiterRant, hairdresserRant, marketerRant etc? -
@dfox, FYI this issue isn't happening to me anymore.
-
Compared to Windows: speed! You just open your MacBook, enter your password to login, and the OS is ready for you. Resume is so quick. Windows just doesn't have this speed.

Ha! Been there. Very ++ worthy

Yeah that did my head in when latest version of Xcode wouldn't update, and no message to tell you that you need to update your OS.
-
I feel your pain. That was probably the most challenging subject from what I remember of my uni course.
-
Team Falcon...so that way, you can say "we're a great falcon team"
EDIT: just realized this gag may not work depending on your accent. -
As someone with similarly varied and lengthy career in tech, this is excellent advice for both beginner and experienced dev. ++ for you
-
@coderme Niccce. Your ideas have inspired me with my pi setup. Thanks!
-
@coderme I assume you could've downloaded something someone else built to just play music from the pi. I'm curious to know what custom features you wanted which led you to build the audio server with app control.
-
@jirehstudios Ha! Good ol' typo there. Deviant=DevRant
-
Australia we get ripped off comparatively. ~$45 US for 5-10Mbps
-
You're not wrong. I used to work for a company that built marketing automation software and our account managers would give clients the slap on the wrist for that kind of batch and blasting.
If however you were to build the Web push notifications out yourself you could build in segmentation and conttol marketing ability to broadcast to everyone. -
So, here's a fun fact I've just learned: the 'clear' button only appears in the top right corner of the iOS app if there are enough notifs to fill the screen
Couldn't see it there before when there wasn't enough.
Plus, @leviathan07, great point: if you have multiple rants out there, yes, thats when it indeed makes sense to want to tap on the +1's to see which rant was worthy. Hadn't considered that.
